Mou can’t hand out old-school tongue-lashings as modern stars are too mentally frail says Lou Macari

Imagine some CEO publicly complaining that he can't lead his business because he can't get away with bullying his subordinates.
The daft things Football pundits and ex-players can still blurt out in the media is ridiculous.

Guess what: to lead people you need soft skills.

A lot of the top proffesional high pressure firms operate under a culture of 'bullying and high stress', you don't get a softly softly approach in many elite areas of life.

The CEO of the company i work for would laugh in your face at needing to nanny his staff to perform and i think thats very typical. Soft skills isn't just being nice btw.

I’m technically a millennial myself as a 28 year old, but my job takes on graduates every year, so I’m managing 22-24 year olds.

Not technically, you are a Millenial. The people reporting to you are closer to Gen Z or post millenials but they are also really millenials as well. Generations span more than just a few years.

Ah fair enough. I was only asking because I find a lot of people don't realise how old millennials can be, is it mid 30s/40? can never remember the cut off. Not that it applies to you as you obviously knew that.

Mourinho would have very little problem with motivating the current Manchester United squad. To boil down his process to tongue lashings is stupid, Ferguson was a very clever man manager.

The billionaire CEO I work for would probably laugh in the face of your CEO for being poor, and driving a Skoda.

There's a difference between being able to take criticism and being hammered in the press by your own manager on an almost weekly basis. Fortunately that hasn't been the case so far this season, but that respite is still only the result of the contempt that same manager has for the press.
See? Even Mickey Mouse's dog was at it.

Not really. Football/sports and the military seem to be the only place this exist. Where yelling at an individual is used to try and get them to perform. You see that in your work place (assuming you do a 9-5) it doesn’t happen. But this is another topic to be fair, however I do think we time the culture will change. Good thing or bad thing I don’t know. I don’t see nothing wrong with a ‘man’ wanting to be spoken to like a ‘man’.

Brian Clough has knocked out his own player after a match. Managers definitely have to treat their players differently these days.

This is simply not true. The hospitality industry is notorious for the treatment dished out by team leaders and middle management against often poorly paid staff. That’s before even using trading floors etc as a benchmark.

In a lot of high demand, high pressure jobs there’s little in the way of soft skills, work/life balance or anything of the sort.

It’s a relatively novel idea that managers need to be nice to their staff. I can guarantee to you right now there are bellhops in hotels getting strips torn off them about making sure bank holiday breaks go off without a hitch.

I am pretty certain that the working environment at Man Utd is much better than in many workplaces across the UK. Even if Mourinho is a grump.

Fergie would have created an environment where someone not putting the work in would have been a pariah and an outlier vs the rest who would have run into a brick wall for him. I get the point about players now having more power and it did show up from time to time but idk if it is fair to make a comparison to the current situation. This problem is one of Mourinho own doing so saying Fergie would struggle as well is not true when he would not have let it get to this point.

Its not fair to judge Mou too harshly when many of the problems where here before he even got the job but at some point you have to wonder how many excuses you can trot out before you get to the actual problem.

Also the whole spiel about young players lacking bollocks seems like outdated mode of thinking when one did just that last year when he single handedly dug his team out of relegation. If young players where so soft than Pep's team would be full of geriatrics.

Excellent post

Well, yeah. That is what happens when you smash your wage budget and start signings rappers posing as football players on insane contracts that didn't make sense in the first place. Some of these guys need a right royal bollocking but Mourinho won't be the one dishing it out unfortunately.
Had to check back and see that this casual racism has gone unwarned.

Nice.

I dont know about that, I work in high level telecom sales and this sort of behavior is part of the package, the prevailing attitude is one that if you can't take it go find another job that pays you this much .

I really don't see how standing up for yourself is considered mentally frail as opposed to just taking the abuse. Also, Fergie was like a father figure to a lot of players so people took his hairdryer treatment as their dad scolding them.

Old people and trashing younger generations. Name a more iconic duo.
Sack Fergie and Hire Giggs.

Exactly. The whole point of a tongue lashing is to make it feel like you've let yourself down, your teammates down and the manager down. If you're always shouting at players in the locker room and throwing them under the bus in the press room then at some point they are gonna stop responding to your barks.

Also SAF rarely bought a ready-made world-class player. He improved them, and made them world-class. Thus the players replied back with faith and loyalty. They knew that SAF always looking for their best interest.

And also just the way SAF spoke was very motivational.

Exactly, it's not like he was screaming at the likes Veron

So, if not Jose, then who?
Jose is the only one who has enough clout to say things to players that they don't want to hear.
Carrick and McKenna are not the types to do so and it would be strange to hire someone specifically to dish out tongue lashings.

It has to be Jose who does it.
Ed maybe? Not sure why cueball went into the dressing room after the game. The only reason I can think of was to call all of his overpaid buys an absolute disgrace so maybe they'll listen to him. Mourinho won't be doing it, he's already said everyone complained last year when he dished out the hard truth and he won't be doing it this season. We've already seen players crying to the media and undermining his decisions on social media.

The quicker they're given the boot the better.

Hmmmm a black man active with his social media has to be a "rapper" and is posing as a footballer.

Nice one.
So much hatred in that post you quoted, some of our fans have real issues with a clear separation between a player and his personnality/what he does off the pitch.

You guys need to get new jobs then. I get treated like a human and get paid well.

Yeah, bad use of technically there. I was just talking in the sense of the stereotype.

@Cascarino apparently it is if you were born in 81-96! I can never remember exactly, but a rough guide is anyone who’s formative years are at the beginning of the 21st century, ie a teenager.

I wouldn't say modern stars are mentally frail, they are just too idolized, put on a pedestal by the media and fans. They spend all day receiving tweets from fans telling them how amazing they are, their ego's are inflated that they can't just criticism anymore.

SAF wouldnt have bought half of the players that have been bought. He used to buy mostly players who he could control, inspire, create teamwork. It's key imo. It's why Pep only buys nice guys who will do what he says and do it with a passion for the team

Sotry to say Pogba is all about Pogba, Sanchez is about the money.

Pep was after Sanchez prior to United being interested. I see you believe the media narrative Sanchez moved for the money? If Pogba was up for sale I'm positive Pep would be interested.

Really?

Diouf
Fabio
Rafael
Djemba-Djemba
Bebé
Manucho
May
Taibi
Carroll
Bellion
Kleberson

Just a few names off the top of my head SAF signed who definitely didn't inspire. And I know there's more.

Sorry, I don't get your point? are you agreeing, or the opposite?

I know SAF screaming to the press when being asked about Veron.

I meant Sir Alex only screamed at some players based on their personalities.
