Mourinho's real task at Utd - An overpaid, over-hyped squad that needs fixing

Ok apologies for derailing the thread.

Back to the OP - it's difficult because most of the worst offenders are on the biggest contract and if they're happy to sit back and pick up big wages at United, they're probably not going to be inclined to move elsewhere.

As someone said earlier, Januzaj is on £60k a week and Young is on £110k - that sums up the mindless wastage.

It's taken four or five transfer windows to accumulate all this rubbish and sadly it'll take another four or five windows to ship it all out.

On a more positive note, the recruitment of a new set of scouts is presumably an attempt to end this mindless transfer policy. The guy from Atletico should be a particularly good signing if he can replicate what he's done with them at United.

Will it? Player turnover can often be quite quick - our squad now is massively, massively different from the one Fergie left us just three years ago in 2013. Even the side from the Moyes year has changed drastically.

Best thing VG did was his mass clear out. I actually don't think there are that many guys who need to be moved on. Bastian is off for sure, Rooney should go and Depay looks set to go permanently or on loan. That's over £500k a week off the books. Bastian and Depay might even happen in Jan.

There will always be big names at United commanding the massive wages but I agree with what lot's people are saying about the squad players who hold onto astronomical wages. Rooney, for example, is now a squad player. I would rather see a youth player get minutes than someone who is completely out of form.

Mourinho has already stated the squads bigger than he likes to operate with usually. I can see more leaving than coming in. Saying that over Jan and the summer I can see another 4-5 maybe half a dozen players being bought in and perhaps 8 maybe 10 going out. What did Mourinho say when he came in. It would be better to start with a new squad, and I dont think he was saying it lightly.

When it comes to squad clearouts we have the best man for the job we really do.

Jose is a master at moving huge volumes of players in a single window.. I expect most of our players to go in summer but if he is very determined to get top 4 this year then January will be interesting too.

Pep is also pretty good at clearouts.

I wouldn't be surprised to see half the squad gone by start of next season.

The importance of location is vastly overblown here. Players don't go to Real Madrid or Barcelona just because of the location, sure it's a nice addition, but the main reason they go there is glory. Vast majority of modern footballers have grown up watching Madrid and Barcelona win multiple European honors, watched world's best footballers playing for them and as a brand, even though Manchester United might be worth more marketing wise, they are just more recognized by actual footballers. Moving club to London would not solve this, Spanish top clubs will still be considerably more attractive than any English club.

Yeah but has he ever had a squad as bloated as this? United's squad, as we've said, is full of players earning far more than their performances merit, which will make them extremely difficult to get rid of. They know they're onto a good thing at United. Plus most of them are on long contract.

Think about it - who can we feasibly get rid of in the next couple of windows?

Rooney is contracted for three years and no serious club can pay his wages.
Ashley Young is contracted until 2018. Given his age he'll probably think he's better off running the contract down and leaving for free in two years' time, rather than sacrificing all that easy money
Phil Jones is contracted until 2019 (he was given the contract last year FFS!!). He's going nowhere unless he's pensioned off
Marcus Rojo is on far too much money for anyone to take him
Ditto Schneiderlin (he's on £100k, Rakitic £75k according to Total Sportek)
Ditto Mkhitaryan if we want to shift him (no-one's going to give a flake £140,000 a week)

There seems to be an attitude at united that the fact you're at united means you're an elite player so you should be on elite player wages. That's the reverse of the way it works at clubs like Bayern munich where, outside of the world class players there are frequently players on comparatively low wages. A good example would be the fact that when kroos left Bayern he was on something like 10 or 20k less per week than tom cleverley was on here. I think we need to have a split pay system: those who are genuine world class who need to be paid competitively high wages to keep them here, and those who are fortunate to be at the club and whose wages should reflect that.

Yeah if you look at Barcelona that's exactly what they do. They've only got two players between £90k and £200k a week, and those two players are Pique and Mascherano.

I agree that Bailly looks the real deal, Shaw, Pogba, Martial and Rashford have massive potential, and I love Herrera, but I am not talking about squads, or potential, I am talking about guaranteed 1st eleven.....

Pogba on reputation maybe, not form, but the others sure they would be in the squads, but improving their first teams? don't think so. Even still you have quoted 5 players that would maybe be fringe for the other teams.... how is that not overhyped when we are looking for players good enough to win us the league?

On Herrera, love what he does and he would defo be in most fans and managers squads.... but he is hardly the midfield maestro that dominates and controls games, he is a great player to have as a midfielder alongside Pogba.... past successful squads have shown you need a blend of world class and good players, but world class he aint and starting 11 for most teams in the top 7 or 8 he aint, not if we are looking at replacing Carrick with him!

BTW not trying to hate on lots, just think we are unrealistic, I love the players you have listed and would not want them to be anywherw but Utd, however when they are the best supporting by the likes of Felani, when our strike force is admittedly talented but way over the hill for a league of this energy. We have too many weak and under performing players in and around these players, we are therefore relying on Martial, Rashford ect... to carry the team, it is no wonder we are so often disapointing.

BTW 2, also would not want Mata, Blind, Carrick, Valencia moving on, but yet again guaranteed 1st teamers to win the league... we need more quality.

Mate DDG gets the starter spot ahead of every GK in PL easy.

Shaw gets starter spot ahead of Milner/Moreno, Monreal, Kolarov/Clichy every day of the week.

Pogba is arguably our best player this season. Problem is that many football fans, ours included are watching him though his price tag expecting assists and goals every single game. Thing is he would already had few assists in his teamsheet if our attackers were a bit more clinical. As for goals he's playing the price of not playing any pre season matches with the team and also having few days off due to EURO.

Martial would make first team instantly at Arsenal (Venger probably still grieving over not signing him before us), probably at Liverpool as well, would challenge Aguero nicely especially since he had squabble with Pep. Can't see him being picked before Costa or Kane TBH tho.

Herrera as much as i like and appreciate him, don't think would make first 11 in any of those teams. Those teams either play formation he won't excel in or they have better players in his position. Players that offer more. Can only see him challenging Wijnaldum.

I do agree that we have too many squad players in our team and not enough specialists. But that's on our previous managers and club's management.

Name: W.Rooney.
Over Paid - £250-300kpw - Check.
Over Hyped - poor performer - Check.
Jose's task - very difficult.

Never forget that Mourinho specifically named Rooney as one of the players that could change the culture at United.
