Moyes So Far!

How the feck did Gibbo manage to make it past all the reports and color codes to actually warrant a bid?

bit mofos

Because he's, contrary to some cretins on here, a good Premier League player. He's done well for Everton since moving.

I've only watched the second half against Sevilla in this pre-season, have we shifted towards a more pressing style, as was Moyes' style at Everton (especially in the opposition half), or are we still sitting off and looking for counters?

I don't know what the footballing opposite of pressing is (lets call it bending over) but that's what you were doing in the first half against Sevilla from what I saw.

Don't be a cock.

It was a genuine question that was seeking a genuine answer; if you can't provide that, feck off and wum someone else.

There really was not much pressing to be seen Feed Me, like in almost every other pre season game so far.
Surely not easy to get that into our players minds (if he intends to) after years of not doing it at all.

Fair point. It'll be quite a step-change for our team. We've had years and years of deliberately sitting off to try and set up counter attacks - it's why we've been such a nerve-wracking team to watch over the years! Fergie was quite unique actually, in that he resisted changing despite the pressing game gaining so much traction from about '09 onwards.

I think it's something Moyes will look at though. Everton, especially at Goodison, were always a set of bastards to play out from the back against. Their final third pressing was the best in the league under Moyes.

I agree.
Although we had a period of about 15 to 20 mins after scoring the 2-1 when we defended much higher up the pitch and pressed them. Unsurprisingly they made mistakes and we came to some good chances. The 3-1 killed us off of course, but during that period of time we looked like playing football.

Reading that article about the recruitment process would suggest that he's going to be slow to try to buy players this summer anyway given he won't have the level of knowledge about them that he demands. Likely why he's gone for big targets and possibly why he pulled out from Thiago. If he's still the boss in January things could move a lot quicker.

That's the reason I asked the question, because, while it wasn't a fully-formed pressing game, I thought we were trying to defend higher in that second half. I actually thought there was a lot to be positive about based on the second half.

That to me sends a clear message that for a club like United (or Arsenal/Liverpool etc) where the emphasis is making a thorough calculated decision and then pulling the wallet out it is the perfect fit. Like I said we just can't afford to waste millions in the market every season.

Yup. I don't get why we aren't doing it more often though. Is it a fitness thing? In the first half it was the same picture as alwas. We sat pretty deep and invited them to put pressure on us.

Agreed wholeheartedly. Loads on here are dying for us just to throw a load of money at our squad every summer, but I think that the really quick turnover of players sees a team lose it's soul. Moyes seems more and more like the right man for the job, but he needs to get off to a good start in the League to keep the muppets onside.

I fully expect him to be and hope that he is. Just threw in the proviso.

It's fine, it's just the way you worded it that made me laugh.

If we don't do the business we want to this summer, I don't think we'll do anything until next summer. We've never really done major January business. Fergie had this odd fixation with not signing someone that might be CL cup-tied. I always found it strange, as a signing could still strengthen us domestically.

Casting my mind back, some of our January business has been class - Saha, Vidic and Evra off the top of my head.

Maybe he wanted to look at both systems in a meaningless game.

I don't think it's fitness. There's been a lot of talk about how fit Moyes' teams are (and I agree), but we shouldn't forget that United have always been one of the fittest sides around. You don't score the ridiculous number of stoppage time winners that we have over the years if you don't have great fitness levels. I think you were right first time round - it's a cultural thing. This squad isn't used to pressing, it's used to sitting off and waiting for counter attacking opportunities to develop.

Don't think so. We have always done that in recent years. We started to press and defend higher up the pitch only when we were down. We've had this discussions numerous times already. THe question why we invite other clubs to put pressure on us when we are in the lead.

Probably. That we start to defend higher up the pitch the moment we go behind is nothing new either.

Not so with Moyes.

Gibson, Pienaar, Jelavic, Donovan, Senderos, Coleman, Jo, Gardener, Gosling, Howard, Westerveld, Stubbs, Beattie, Arteta.

All players bought in the window. (I left out loads of no-mark players)

Yeah, but the difference is they have never really had to worry about players being European cup-tied. Who knows, maybe Moyes won't give a stuff about that and will look to land a player if he thinks he's right for the club.

Don't know why but this made me laugh. You are right obviously but still :).

I see him as being more concerned with getting the right player in for the future than just concerning himself with cup tied players for this season. Anyway, there's loads of really great players out there not playing for CL teams. He just needs to get working on them and get the research done.

The point I'm making isn't really about January Vs Summer, it's about now Vs later. I think that we'll see more action from Moyes in the future windows once he gets more time for doing the background work.

Then he could have come out and said exactly that or similar. Most fans would understand that and be prefectly fine with it. Problem is the way he and Eddy came out in full force talking about signing players.

Agree with all that.

I think he still will sign a midfielder. It's about getting the best player we can at this point and it's taking longer than anticipated. If we still have no-one come the end of the window then you have a point.

Did we actually go for Thiago?. I read that Thiago stated we never even tried to sign him

I wish he'd just hurry up and lose a game so I can start moaning about him.

First piece of silverware sorted, the utd train rolls on regardless

Are you watching ysb?

Moyes and pressing? He's more known for sitting deep and playing the direct, percentage game. I thought that was fairly evident today vs Wigan.
