Nani

Can't wait for the new season. Looks like everyone spare Hargreaves and Rio are at full strength.

I think Fergie said on MUTV that he would be on the bench for Philly

I gather Valencia is near full fitness, although Anderson will apparently need a bit more time.

From what I saw from the Kansas game was he was trying to do it all himself. Back to the old Nani. I am sure it was to prove some point that he was the best on the pitch, he seems to be grounded when playing with Rooney, Valencia etc etc.

If he applies the same logic to these friendlies he will be fine. A solid 90mins is never a bad thing.

Think it's inevitable we'll see a lot of "the old Nani" this season. Young players don't develop in a linear way, they have ups and downs and there's every chance we'll have to endure some frustrating displays in the coming weeks.

The main difference, IMO, is that we now know he has it in him to perform like a really top class player. This will make a return to his bad old ways much easier to handle, seeing as we'll no longer have that nagging doubt about whether or not he'll ever get his shit together. I just hope that all the match-going fans are prepared to be patient with him. He's a confidence player and has a habit of falling to pieces once the anguished groans start to be heard from the stands.

Following on from the above how's Nani been doing in pre-season thus far? From the ratings threads it seems he has gone back to his 'old self' whereas the likes of Hernandez seem to be impressing from the off...

Nani seems more of the old so far to me in pre-season. It might just be a matter of getting back into the rhythm of things again for him but, I missed the Chivas game.

His first game back was his worst - which was expected for the conditions and how long he had been back.

The MLS game he didn't do too bad but, definitely lacking in sharpness. What I found interesting in that game - for corners, he was our outlet. He was being told to stay up.

Nani's got better with each game he's played. A bit poo in his first game back but some nice moments against Chivas.

Still not quite there yet and making some odd/frustrating decisions but he seems to be shaking the rust off nicely.

Nani will always look frustrating because every game he plays the team always seems to look for him on the wings so he always has a lot of time on the ball but unfortunately hes not quite there yet in terms of consistancy to make the right decision 100% of the time

Is it just me or has he veered a tiny bit in the wrong direction. He seemed to be trying a lot of Hollywood shots today.

Not sure if I'd say he tried too many - maybe 2 or 3 and one was pretty decent effort.

If we want the Nani that has the tricks and such, have to expect a few "bad" decisions or bit too much.

Free kicks - screw them all. Let VDS come take them. feckers can't hit the target. Am really getting annoyed at them all.

Personally i thought he was brilliant last night. His final ball into the box was off a few times, but a few times it was good too; nobody's perfect. What i found so exciting though was his link-up play with Evra; when they tried to double-up on Nani he released Evra down the flank, when one tracked Evra he'd beat his man himself. It got to the point in the second half where they'd be tripling-up on the pair of them, opening up space all over and confusing the Newcastle defence no end. Nani's crossing may not be his best attribute, but his little through-balls are devastating at times. It's his trickery that allows him the space to do it too i believe; it may look like mere showboating, but he twists the defending players into such a knot sometimes that there's no way they can track the run of Evra when it comes or predict which way he's gonna dink it. As for his shooting, we all know he can bang 'em in, but again, it's one of those things that you're not really going to get right 70% of the time whoever you are. What i was most impressed with second half of last season was his maturity; he seemed to have finally learnt his trade well enough to impose his obvious tallent on a game to potent effect; i've seen nothing so far this season to suggest that he's somehow lost that knack. Well done, Nani.

I thought those diagonal reverse passes to the box was a good idea although the United forwards didn't read it. It was a check mate move. If he had crossed straight the Newcastle defenders would read it & clear it without difficulty.

Good performance from him.
Was the only one providing danger in the first 15-20 minutes.
Looked sharp as hell, have only seen him a few times as quick as yesterday.

His final ball was a bit off, although I think that he was unlucky a few times, those low crosses into the back of the defence weren't bad, just that there was no one on the edge of the box to make something out of them.

Made me hungry for more.

Early season but he'll get into the swing of things soon. Don't think he's entirely match fit.

I may get slated, but I think he's better then Valencia on the right. He offers alot more going forward, but Valencia himself is still a fantastic asset hence the reason Nani will start the lesser games on the left. Bit disappointed not to see Park last night.

It's frustrating watching Nani on the left when you know he's so much better on the right. He's a victim of his own versatility.

Christ, this old chestnut.

What was Nani's best performance of last season?

feck it, what was the best individual performance of any united player last season?

That's right, it was Nani against Bayern at Old Trafford. Playing on the LEFT.

Any chance we could give this right/left bollox a rest this season? Nani is capable of playing well on either flank. He is also capable of playing poorly on either flank. Simples.

I thought he was decent last night. Not amazing but good enough. Some of the old frustrations still evident but made up for it with some really excellent moments.

Got better with each game in pre-season, so bound to get better and better from here. Good stuff.

Actually I think his best games were the one against Arsenal where he ripped Clichy is half and this game at home, against whom I can't seem to remember, where he kept whipping in amazing cross after another from the right.

Completely agreed.

Couldn't agree more.

He's starting the season MUCH better than the last two campaigns, these are very good signs. Full of confidence and obviously hungry for playing time and success, let's wait until he picks up the form he had in spring. Nani/Valencia will easily be the best wing pair in the league.

i think most will agree that nani had a good game last nite with a few very good moments

can we not just leave it at that

everything with nani is polemic

I thought he was very good, positive and confident and produced some very good crosses from the left. Looked our most dangerous player throughout the game in my opinion. Also showed hunger and work rate in winning the ball back on numerous occasions.

He's still feelling his way in and getting some sharpness back. He was a constant threat last night and although he wasn't amazing and he frustrated at times he still played well.

He'll be a big player for us this season.

I think all really creative wingers frustrate at times. they'll have the occasional game where everything comes off but in most games they'll have incredibly frustrating moments. Even an amazing talent like Giggs has a habit of pointlessly giving the ball away every now and then. I think Nani will always be the same.

The good thing about Nani since the beginning of this year is that he's shown some really top class end product in amongst the frustrating moments. Which is all you can ask really and puts the petty irritations in perspective.
