NFL Thread

Five times in 14 seasons if I'm right. Posting an impressive 4-5 record in the playoffs, throwing only 11 TD's in those games, against 9 INT'S. The guy hasn't won more than 9 games since 2009.
That's nowhere near being elite or anything like that. At least not to me.

Record isnt all on the quarterback. They lost some tough playoff games when other players screwed up. Hes not in the brees brady rodgers tier but hes in the next one. Or at least he was. I'd take his career over cam Newton's or matt Ryan's and definitely over elis.

I know he's not solely responsible for the records, but he's the most important player on the team, by far. So he should be able to elevate them to a certain degree. I just don't see that. I'd put Ryan above him. Newton's career is not long enough to judge but I don't see why Rivers should be held in higher regard, to be honest.
Maybe it's because I'm just watching football regularly since about 09. But since I do, I have yet to see him do something special. To me he is an above average QB with great durability, good character and that's about it.

From 06 to 09 he led his team to 4 straight division titles and a 40-24 record. It's fair to say you missed his prime. Those teams with Rivers, Tomlinson and Gates were excellent.

Likely the case. Judging from what I've seen from him, which is now about 9 years of football, he just never stood out in any way to me.

Statistics are a very good indicator of how good players are/were. More so in the NFL than in footy.

Sure, theya re a good indicator - but, as with opinions as bias - they never will tell you the full story.

Ryan above Rivers? Ryan was a choke job for most of his career. His supporting cast has been incredibly good as well.

Ryan had that one amazing season under Shanahan - and clearly Shanahan deserves a lot of credit evidenced by what he’s doing already at the 49ers.

Not saying Ryan isn’t a franchise QB - he is. Just not a top elite one.

So agree with your post.

On the other hand, the chargers have always been an almost team but maybe more importantly they have been decimated by injuries for the last, what, 3 seasons?

Vikings OL coach Tony Sparano died today at age 56 :(...

Sparano had complained about chest pains and went to the hospital Thursday, a source told ESPN's Chris Mortensen. Sparano underwent tests and was released Friday. The source said Sparano's wife found him unconscious Sunday morning as they prepared to leave for church but could not revive him.

Julio Jones won't be reporting to training camp. He has three fecking years left on his deal.

All the sitting out is getting pretty tedious now. Absolutely agree with the Falcons in this case, that would be a bad precedent to set.

Gotta agree. Julio is top class but his deal is good even in current market context and giving new deals when people have 3 years left is telling everyone if they sign a 5/6/7 year deal with the Falcons They’ll be able to re negotiate in half.

The season really needs to start now. This little bit when it’s so close yet so far is the worst. At least in summer you know ain’t nothing happening. And early offseason you got the free agency and draft shenanigans.

Although guess we will have hard knocks!

Hard to make that case to be honest. Julio is clearly one of the best, if not the best, currently playing.
Think you have to say Brown is the best in business at the moment. Julio is a dominant force but he really lacked TDs last year imo. For me, it's something like this:

Tier 1: AB, Julio
Tier 2: Hopkins, OBJ, AJ Green
Tier 3: Evans, Thomas, Allen

Probably forgetting a fair few but still. I really hope Hopkins can close the gap between him and the best WRs if Watson stays healthy for an entire season.

It's even harder to rank the best RBs. There are eight standouts according to the mock drafts:

Zeke
Bell
Johnson
Gurley
Shady
Fournette
Kamara
(Barkley) TBD

Imagine drafting at the end of the first round and being able to get a RB combo of Melvin Gordon and McCoy or something

That’s a fair point. But I think Julio two years ago was beyond unbelievable. Brown is no doubt more productive though. And it’s a fair case to say he’s better.

Gurley, Rams have agreed to a 4-year extension for $60m with $45m guaranteed  That’s almost the kind of money Bell is looking for.

Never thought I’d say this but I can’t wait to see Neil on TV again. The season can’t start soon enough.

So $15m per year, and the Steelers were offering Bell $14m, where he was demanding $17?

I don't see Bell getting the $17m anywhere else, I expect he'll test the market and then sign a deal with Pittsburgh.

edit: next year I mean .

If he performs well this year I can see him getting that kind of money from a team desperate enough, the Jets for example if they feel they can compete with Brady getting older and if Darnold turns out to be good/great.

Anyway though great deal for Gurley, he can thank McVay on his knees for that, imagine he’d have to play for Fisher another year.

NFL had proved to be a good distraction to United in recent seasons

AB is on his own at the top as far as I’m concerned. Only reason Julio is in the debate is cause he has phsyical attributes over him.

I have sky sports now , do they only do the 1 early Sunday game or is there any way to select between the games ?

RedZone! Usually on Sky Sports Mix, 6pm every Sunday, switches from game to game like a live highlights package.

There's also a live game at 6pm, 9:25pm and 1:25am Sunday night into Monday morning, then both Monday and Thursday nights games but they're 1:25am jobs too.
