I'm not sure of the question here. Handheld mode may be more fluid because it runs at 720p rather than 1080p and in some games that haven't been optimised that would be a difference, so maybe that's what you are seeing?

When games aim for 60/30fps that doesn't mean they always hit them, even the new Xbox will struggle with that under certain conditions but they don't have to take into account both modes.
 
If Xenoblade 2 and the new main-line Pokémon Switch title are good I'll probably get the Switch.
 
My girlfriend has got me one for Xmas. It's killing me knowing it's sat upstairs and I have to wait 2 months to play it. I might have to lay on a guilt trip. It's my birthday next week so hopefully I can convince her to give it me then
 
Loving Mario so far, the 2D stuff is such a nice touch. Also love
finding a painting you can jump into, nice blast from the past

Also when I think about Mario 64 I didn’t think that was actually difficult either, especially on the 3ds with better controls than the N64.

Im incredibly tempted too. Just worried Id end up barely playing it and not getting into these potentially goat games after all the hype.

Wii U I only really ended up using for multiplayer and that was a more suited console for it. 3ds I barely played.

See, this is the problem. Hype.

People need to stop reading reviews and just play. Just enjoy games without reading about the highs or the flaws first. Reviews have always been about either opinions, or more sadly, who pays for those opinions, but the fact is you don't know until you play. Both Zelda and Mario are right up there as the top 3 of their series, which easily makes them among the best games released for a very long time.

As for this multiplayer stuff, what are you going on about? More suitable? The Switch has so far been far better for Mario Kart and Splatoon for me and four player split screen is easily better too. Mario Kart, for example, really is a different game on it thanks to not only the framerate changing the tracks subtley enough to make them feel fresher, but it's so smooth in 4 player even on that tiny screen. It just works.

It's basically an evolution of the Wii U. It's a far better machine and makes way more sense too. I love my Wii U, I am looking at it under my tv right now, but this is something else, this is a console that smashes what the Wii U was meant to do out of the park.


In summary stop worrying about Goat shit. The games so far are awesome, the indie support knocks it out of the park, and the multiplayer works even better than the Wii and WiiU. Besides, what console has ever rivalled such a release list in it's first year?

I agree on just playing rather than basing everything on reviews, but unfortunately newborn means justifying £400+ with a few games, probably closer to £600 knowing me.

As for multiplayer, the cost of the controllers (no backwards compat on all my wii motes, wii u pro controller etc), less mp games (appreciate this will improve with time!), and my own personal circumstances (not at the family home anymore).

No Nintendoland, NSMBU, Mario 3D World, Smash Bros, Mario Maker or Donkey Kong (plus some third party games)

Zelda I could potentially play on WII U, same for Mario Kart and Splatoon. So it just feels a risk to spend the money and technically only gain access to Mario Odyssey, when the other games I have access to lesser versions of.

However, my Wii U doesnt get touched anymore except for xmas and when groups are here. That would probably help put a good chunk towards the cost. Mario and Zelda do look great, and Rocket League handheld could be a dream.

Its tough.

Ah man, I know that pain well.

Hey, look at it this way, it'll always be there when you are ready and can afford it. The best I can say with all honesty dude, is you won't regret it. It's what the Wii U was meant to be and more.

However, you have bigger things to worry about right now, so it won't hurt to wait. It's just a shame the prices of games never drop much for when you are ready!
 
Having troubles in Deep Woods:

When I throw the cap on a scarecrow, I have limited time to get the moon, and no matter how fast I run it still disappears before I get there. How do I get there in time?

The original Super Mario Brothers 2 was deemed too difficult for us weaklings in the West. The version we got was a completely different game reskinned.

The original eventually came out here as part of a collection and is called The Lost Levels.
 
What a game! I think I have played through about 5 single player games TOTAL in the past 20 years (Portal 1, Portal 2, Civ 5, HL1, HL2) and the rest has been online.

This has gripped me like nothing else, so playable, the colours are amazing, I love it!
 
They all have moments really, but none can be considered that difficult. Mario 64 perhaps has the hardest moments on the N64 version. Plus a lot of the challenge in these games is being fluid and mastering controlling Mario. Like there a bit on the forest level where there's red platforms up the side and you can jump one at a time, then long jump separately, but the real skill is in triple jumping and linking 3 long jumps together. That's the real challenge, learning to play fast and fluid. Mario Maker takes that to the extreme, but you can pull of moments like that in any Mario game.

Odyssey isn't such a cakewalk though, some of the moons can be a bit tricky so far. The bosses are ridiculously easy though, up to where I am at least :( But at least there's plenty of creativity there.
 
Getting all 120 stars on Mario 64 would definitely be considered challenging.

Galaxy was easy but if you wanted to 100% it, some of the comet medals and comet levels were challenging. I quite enjoyed having to beat a boss with just a single piece of health or do a challenging level within a set time limit.

I hope there is a similar level of challenge to Odyssey.

To be fair there is the handheld market too which will make a big difference (particularly once Pokemon hits)

Wii U was good in lots of ways. Just some terrible marketing and decision making cost it (similar to Xbox). The name probably the biggest issue.

Yeah, I reckon loads of people still don't know that the Wii U was a new console (or that it even existed).
 
Major U-turn for me

I played it for many hours today for the bank holiday and I love it now.

Just wasn’t into it for the first two days for whatever reason
 
Well finished the main story of Mario today and absolutely smashed it.

Last world spoiler be warned....

I loved the nostalgia of the Mushroom Kingdom. I bought the Mario 64 outfit before I went into the castle and that coupled with the music really brought back feelings of being young, it was a really nice touch I thought. Yoshi on the roof was ace too.

The Wii U also didn't have the first year that the Switch did. I mean potentially two of the greatest games of all time released on the switch within six months. The Wii U had to wait like a year for its first great game.

The issue with Wii U was they couldn't get the price of the tablet down so they had to keep the high cost up. @Olly is right about the name too.

They still need to release the old classics with multiplayer which I cannot wait for. I don't mind paying the yearly sub as it's not really a lot.
 
To be fair, I think I was being a little harsh when I said it was "good". Finished it this afternoon, and enjoyed it more as I went along. It really is an excellent game, gorgeous, highly polished and full of lovely wee details.

Still don't think it's GOTY level, or an all time great, but I do like it a lot in the end.

EDIT:
WTF was with the Skyrim dragon and level, though, just felt completely out of place..

There's strong rumours of Bayonetta and Mario Maker having Switch versions. I think those are probably the last of the Wii U games that will get the treatment though, bar maybe Smash Bros. I'm not sure if they'd rather port Smash Wii U with some extra content or build a completely new game instead.

2018 has a chance of Pokémon and Metroid in terms of big IPs, but I wouldn't be surprised if one of them is pushed to around February 2019. I also think Nintendo will want to get Animal Crossing and Pikmin on Switch very soon, but they also will not want to detract too much from the new Animal Crossing Mobile game. Unless they can add some kind of connectivity between it and a Switch game.
 
It's amusing to see the speculation and doubt. I mean, if you read back through this thread there's plenty of people doubting the release list including myself. All of a sudden we have 2 Goty contenders and more games than anyone thought possible.

With all the shit about loot boxes, ridiculous update sizes and console half steps every five minutes, it's nice to just look back on a decent year for Nintendo and the Switch and enjoy simple plug in and play gaming again.

I'm still 50/50 on getting a Switch. I still feel like €400 is a lot for a console with, essentially, only 2-3 amazing games. Nintendo pretty much always manage to pull off an amazing Mario and Zelda game with their consoles, it's the longevity after them that's the problem. I'm just not seeing much on the Switch in 2018 to justify getting one?

I don't know, to be fair, it might just take time, I barely bought any games for my PS4 for the first 2-3 years and now it feels like I'm buying new games for it every month.

I guess basically I really want to fecking play Zelda and Mario but don't want to commit to a Nintendo console :lol:

Zelda and Mario are right up there as two of the best games ever made, there's no question about that, let alone for first releases. But people questioned the release list before the machine launched, and now we have a ridiculous amount of games. BTW if you didn't own a Wii-U you also have Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon 2, which are both outstanding games too and would both be also on the list for Goty, plus the indie releases really make sense for it. Arms, Mario and Rabbids, Fire Emblem Warriors and Pokken tourny are all well up there too.

I think, and this isn't insider info talking either, that simply due to the sales we are going to get a proper steady release. I mean even EA have stopped being dicks in their little spat with Nintendo and tried with Fifa, Bethseda have weighed in and Ubisoft are throwing their weight around too. Three shit companies, but the biggest, which means the smaller ones have taken notice.


But, as always, my advice is that if you are unsure hold off until you can afford it and it has games you want to play man. Stop reading reviews, don't believe all the hype on anything, just try one when you can and enjoy it if you get one.

Oh I definitely am :lol:

I got a PS4 a few months after launch because, even though there wasn't much on it I wanted to play yet, I knew that there would be in the future, so it didn't feel like a potential waste of money. You just have that guarantee with Sony and their consoles, really.

I guess I just don't feel that guarantee with Nintendo, is all. I'll probably leave it for now and give it another year month week day before revisiting buying one

Though I get what you mean there. I'd already argue the Xbone has been a bigger waste after a few years than the Switch has already, so at least there's that ;)
