Gaming Nintendo Switch

Bought Lost Sphear, hoping for another old-school jrpg adventure. I'll give a review when I feel comfortable if people are interested.

note: still working (slowly) on a rpg review thread, will probably not be out in a long, long time.

Nope.
My focus will be on mostly jrpgs with the odd rpg/arpg that gives you a bit of the same sense of progress as a typical jrpg game.

Edit: You know, menus, leveling, story, magic etc. Closest to skyrim will likely be Xenoblade & Xenoblade 2, or Summoner (PS2 title that is on steam).

Interested to know what you think of Lost Sphear. Reviews are pretty average but in this genre that doesn’t always mean much.

Yeah, I know you know your stuff. I'll be very interested in such a thread my friend, I used to be such a heavy JRPG gamer but these days I think I suffer from both just expecting a lot of dumbed down shite and a lack of time due to personal circumstances with my two little boys. However, a list and honest reviews of them from someone like yourself who seems to be just motivated by the games and doesn't care about platform and all that is just what would interest me.

Go for it man. Just remember to include virtually every Snes Jrpg and still put Zelda 3 + 4 high up on the list even though they aren't really rpgs in the traditional sense ;)

Just started it up, and I play final fantasy 14 (mmorpg) as well quite often, so give me a week or so and I'll give some feedback. :)

Maybe I should just put it out as a list and edit in reviews/ratings as I go, that way it can be a growing project instead of something I have to work on for a long time and find myself happy with before posting and run the risk of deleting the whole thing...

Idea was to give info on the rpg/jrpgs I enjoy and have people submit similar stuff for their own games within the category. As you said yourself, there has become so much difference between the games in the genre that people kind of need guides in order to find the stuff that they can enjoy (assuming they know their taste).

I know you have plenty of time, but I can imagine motivation is hard to keep up. So why not start a thread with the list of games you aim to review, then just bold the ones (and link them) when you post each new review? It would help keep you motivated as you have a goal and also make it easy for people to read.

Don't worry about a general sub genre and all that, after all as you well know we could all have different opinions on that, just maybe have a simple classification key to how YOU think they fit in and if people like a game you've recommended from a particular sub genre you've defined, they know they might like another. If that makes any sense ;)

Off topic, but would you happen to know why, when I stream Skyrim to my 4K TV via Steamlink, it looks blurry for short periods of time? I'm talking for maybe a second, when I sharply change direction.

I bought it on PSVR on release day despite owning it already on the PC, 360 and PS3 and sinking more combined hours into it than perhaps any other game.


It's still not the same genre as the games before it, especially Morrowind, and has no place on a decent list of rpgs/jrpgs though.

I know what you’re getting at but do disagree. I lump all RPGs into the same category, whether they are action, fantasy etc. My own personal top 10 of RPGs:

1) Skyrim
2) Mass Effect 2
3) Deus Ex
4) Morrowind
5) Fallout 3
6) Mass Effect
7) Zelda BOTW
8) Star Wars: KOTOR
9) Dragon Age: Origins
10) Jade Empire

you can do that if you want but you can equally group them into CRPG, JRPG, OWRPG etc. easily because they vary so wildly in what they are.

JRPG's couldn't be more different than Western RPG's, really, the only traits they share are the basics like character progession and world interaction.

it's a bit like lumping football and basketball games all into sports games and asking someone to pick their favourite. Well.. what if I have a favourite football game and a favourite basketball game? They're so different that I don't feel comparing them serves any purpose.

Ha! I only play modded Skyrim now - but I’m perfectly fine with vanilla too. I will never forget the first experience of spotting Bleak Falls Barrow in the distance. I fell in love with it then

It's such a Nintendo version of a shooter. It's easy to pick up the basics, you just want to paint more of the floor than the other team. But there's a fairly high skill and tactics ceiling if you're interested in becoming better, but it's a lot of fun to just play at random too. There's actually a single player campaign this time around too, with a few levels, boss fights and collectibles. I've only bothered to do the first sector though (i think there's 4 or 5) so can't comment much on that.

This. I had to stop playing it as I was showing up to work half dead. Great fun - really addictive

It's supposed to be a spiritual successor of sorts to I Am Setsuna. Might be worth playing that one first if you haven't, or at least playing it in the future as it's the one that's apparently better (or at least, reviewed better).

So far (2-3 hours) seems more like a very bland jrpg but with some chrono trigger-like battle-system
But early hours still, I'm sure they'll introduce new mechanics soon enough... I hope. Or some depth to the current mechanics. But I thought they'd do that for the magic system in FF15 also where they made something that could have become interesting but phucked it up. :p

There's plenty of great games on the Switch - and even ones that aren't exclusive but are still 'better' because they are now portable. (e.g. Stardew Valley) Personally I love my Switch - my first Nintendo console since my N64

For me the killer games are:
  • Super Mario Odyssey
  • Zelda
  • Mario and Rabbids
  • Mario Kart 8
  • Arms
And my favourite indie games are Stardew Valley and SteamWorld Heist (again the best way of playing these).

This year I'll be picking up... Donkey Kong, Mario Tennis and Kirby.

Sure there are other games not been announced yet too.

And yes the controllers are expensive - I can't counter that one :)

Yeah understandable on the price front.

The portable stuff isn't personally a big plus for me as I'd be buying the Switch more to use at home on the TV. In fact I think I'd rarely take it out on the go so while it's really neat, it's not much of a selling point for me personally as it's not something I'd use very often outside of the odd occasion.

I see that the two joysticks can be placed together with another piece to form a proper controller. Easy to use or is it completely fine and so no need to really spend 60-70 quid on the pro controller?

Also had no idea Mario Kart was online, I really need to get this.

I'm teetering on the edge. I've just finished paying off littlewoods and have a good price limit to spend on there so I wouldn't even be paying the full price in one lump sum anyway which is making it more tempting.

For a start, we all think the portable side wasn't going to be a big deal but believe me, it really is. I rarely take mine outside but to be able to play the games in bed, switching and shitting mode, or just because you can is well worth it.

As for the Joycons as a controller, it works perfectly fine. In fact, I don't even bother with that, I much prefer using them separately especially in games like Zelda, Mario and Splatoon. Also, although another pair is pricey, you can actually play 4-player Mario Kart perfectly fine if you have 4 joycons as well as loads of other games that let you do it.
 
So now I've done Zelda, I'm torn between what game to get next. From what I've read on here I should be looking at;

- Super Mario Odyssey
- Xenoblade 2
- Splatoon 2
- Celeste

Any others? And which is the least addictive? Might hold off on Xenoblade 2 til the summer when I've finished Uni as I tend to get addicted to RPGs and I struggle to put them down if I'm taken in by it.

Both Mario and Splatoon you can jump in and out of with no problems. In fact, Splatoon 2 is probably your best bet for that as it's short bursts that you can put down for a while.

Nah I didn't mean portable as in leaving the house - I'd never do that for risk of damage / stealing.

I meant portable as it take it around the house depending on what you're doing. I play 80% undocked - either on the bed or on the sofa next to my wife. Only play it docked if I'm playing local multiplayer.

I personally had just an extra set of Joy Cons for a long time - they are great little controllers. I finally bought the Pro controller at Christmas with some christmas money. Now I'd never go back. The Joy Cons are great. The Pro? Amazing (but not essential..)

Mario is definitely the best out of that lot, but not the most challenging. It's a game that you can definitely go at your own pace with though.

Yeah the attach rate for Zelda was crazy at the beginning. I'm not too surprised it's dropped now though that more games are out. I think for lots of people it's still a little "niche" compared to Mario etc, which is a shame.
 
I havent bought it yet just because its such a drain on time and my Switch so far has been a pick up and go console (maybe because I havent got Zelda)
