Northampton preview

The usual guessing game surrounding Sir Alex Ferguson's selection policy is continuing ahead of the FA Cup banana skin at Northampton Town in the FA Cup on Sunday.
The live Sky encounter pits Colin Calderwood's Cobblers, victors over First Division Rotherham United in the third round, against the Premiership champions.

It represents United's first real FA Cup away day at a lower division team since Hereford United back in 1990, the year Sir Alex Ferguson won his first major trophy as Old Trafford boss.

Rio Ferdinand is definitely out, and will obviously be missing for some time, allowing Wes Brown to bid to cement a regular place in central defence in his fellow England international's absence.

Transfer-seeking Nicky Butt is, as expected in the squad, with Phil Neville suspended.

United's A-list stars look set to sit out the tie, following a break in Dubai, so Ruud van Nistelrooy, Ryan Giggs, Roy Keane and Paul Scholes should make way for the likes of Diego Forlan, Kleberson, Quinton Fortune and Cristiano Ronaldo.

£11.5 million signing Louis Saha is, of course, cup-tied after scoring Fulham's late winner against Cheltenham Town in the previous round at Loftus Road.

Northampton hope to pair Derek Asamoah in attack with the experienced Martin Smith, and former Old Trafford youngster Ashley Westwood is desperate to prove his fitness ahead of the Sixfields clash.

Calderwood is definitely without Paul Trollope, Josh Low and Richard Walker, whose loan spell from Blackpool has expired, as he plots one of the biggest cup shocks of all-time.

Let some youngsters get a game. Play Ronaldo behind Daniel and Diego. Maby Bellion for Eagles and Steele for Caroll.
i think we will winn 3-1. Ron-Kleba and Bellion.

is the game being shown on Sky Sports in the UK? if not, does any have a live webcast link?

I think our youngsters are great and often play brilliant attacking football the true Man Utd way. In some respects they are sometimes more entertaining than the current first team who have adopted a more patient and efficient game style.

However I would be wary of throwing them into this. They have the quality to win, but Northampton play in a rough league, their pitch will be horrible and their players will be very physical. I also worry about injuries to the likes of Giggs and Ruud.

My team:

Carroll

Gaz - Brown - Silvestre - O'Shea
Ronaldo - Butt - Phil - Fortune
Forlan - Scholes

Bench:

Ruud
Keane
Fletcher
Giggs
Howard

It's about time we saw United command a game with ease! When was the last, Bolton?! Like the first game of the seaon? This is a perfect time though, for any, for Northampton to play the Great Red Devils. Good luck to you newbies, you'll need it! :smirk:

The last match we totally dominated was against Newcastle away...this season 2-1...but the score does not reflect how we played.

JJ we'd get murdered! Beaten anyway. No-one to win the ball in the middle, Eagles and Ron would get kicked to bits, McShane and Spector would struggle, Blake's nowhere near ready, and Martin's only 16!

-----------Roy----------
Lynch--Wes--Bardsley--Quinton
Fletch--DJ2--Butt--Sheasy
------Bellion-Forlan-----

I've got Sheasy in midfield cos I think he's more dangerous coming forward than Quinton, who's looked dead solid at left-back, and I'd like to see Sheasy tried out in midfield. But I appreciate that this is a bit stupid. Keano in goal's a risk too...

Lynch--Wes--Gaz--O'Shea
Fletch--DJ2--Butt--Fortune

-------Forlan-------------

Should be enough to see us win by a couple.

DJ2 is not playing for United today, today he's lining up for his country.

Forlan misses penalty!!!!
+ got the ball 5 times, passed to the other team or fu*ked up 5, even if he comes back with 3 goals in this very same game, he already proved he is not UTD quality, it makes me laugh when some PPL put a 5 mil price on him, I would not buy him for 0.5m. With SAHA in it is BYE BYE . :o

Finally 0-1 :)

Silvestre

Scrappy goal-according to fivelive.

Still won nil will do.

Good man Micky.
Sounds (well actually reads) as if Ronnie's having a good game, anyone ?

BBC taking the piss

1620: £11.75m signing Ronaldo teases his lower league opponents with a dazzling display of not one, not two, but six step overs - only to then allow the ball to run straight to his opponent's feet to hoots of derision at Sixfields Stadium.

So so much skill, when he is not overdoing it, he is great(most occasions today), one more thing he should work on, the angel of his shot and he should try to left the ball higher when crossing, but at 18 and only a few months into the season, he will only get better and better.

It only happened once, on the other 6 occasions, he was absoloutly great, he is otherwise scaring the shitt out of their 2-3 left backs.
