Our Right Back Position

I think Valencia is still he best option. I like Darmian. But people have to remember that Mkhitaryan will drift inside a lot. So it's imperative we have an attack minded RB.
Also why I don't want Fabinho.

Still think Darmian will come good. He started off really well until LvG's coaching took over plus his injuries. We could have had a long term fix in place already if we had signed Clyne before he signed for Liverpool.

The only reason Valencia is getting flack is because he is a failed winger and people still feel as though he is playing out of position. He's done a better job than Evra did in his final couple seasons for us, attacking wise and defending wise.
Learn to live with the fact he's not a winger anymore, and won't be for our club unless injuries happen.

Easy defending is debatable but attacking wise certainly not Evra got 7 Goals and 10 assists in his last two years at United. Valencia has 0 Goals and 6 assists in his two years as a right back.

On the contrary , i think darmian is a decent wing back. Guess last season - he was asked to defend first and that's not really his fortress

One would hope not. He was shocking at it.

Also  at fortress.

Well - that's what we saw last year though ,right? at Torino, he had decent attacking attributes and was regarded one of finest wing backs in Italy . That qualities doesn't go in one year unless you are asked to defend first.

While in defending , he was pretty bad except for the first 3 matches .

Its a myth he was ever good at attacking at Torino. He is a defensive wing back/full back who, on the basis of last season can't defend

I think Damian will do well under Jose, and with Valencia and TFM as other options

Valencia has done a good job. I struggle to find any RB's that are better than him by anything other than a very tiny margin the the PL.

Rarely does he get beaten for pace. He's stronger than virtually every winger he faces. He's one of the tallest fullbacks in the PL. His crossing can be better, but how many good crossers are there in the league these days? Cresswell and after that? When I look through the team last season no one was putting good crosses in really since Blind moved from the LB role to CB.

I'm really not fussed about getting another RB. I think people are really harsh on Valencia.

How do you know that?

More to the point, how do you know that all our wingers get paid more than full backs? Or that Valencia hasn't taken a pay cut? What you are saying is just pure conjecture

Valencia has been here for 7 seasons, of course he's going to be paid more than Darmian. We reward loyalty.

Probably - I never watched him at Torino - my comment was based on the Italian supporters/ players when we signed him
Point is - we can't keep buying players every year -he definitely deserves a second chance .

I think that in the first 2 months Darmian was terrific. He was energetic, defended well and went forward whenever needed. Then LVG started rotating him, playing him in different positions and his level of performance plummeted. I believe he can do the job for us and Valencia can be a good cover. I do not think that we need another right back at the moment. A defensive midfielder and an experienced center back are much more needed

Of course, I agree. But where I disagree with the majority of the posters in here is that Valencia should be ahead of him in the pecking order at the start of the season. He kept Darmian out of the team after coming back from injury late on last season and has been with the team longer this pre-season.

I also think Valencia should start ahead of him just because we need a good start this year and really cannot keep giving our last year disappointments a chance from day 1. They will have to be slowly integrated against lesser teams/ EL teams

An educated guess.

a- wingers are traditionally paid more then defenders. Even at the time of the Maldinis and the Zanettis it was the case. I doubt Beckham and Ronaldo were paid less then the Neville brothers.
b- at one point Valencia was our regular first team winger and he was doing a decent job in that. Surely his salary will reflect that
c- Also Darmian played for a low Italian side who would probably make Wigan look like Real Madrid in terms of salaries

So you are saying he is not a right back and as evidence, you are saying that he was shit at being a winger?

He was pushed back to right back as we embarrassingly discovered that the guy we'd bought to be a right back (Darmian) after a terrific start, wasn't that good.
So Valencia by default became our best right back.

Can defo see Jones ending up first choice here in a Jose side.

I started a thread on that very thing a few weeks back as I can see it happening. When he's fit Jones has a great engine but is often prone to headless chicken moments when playing through the middle, surely though he's a safer bet at right back ?

If Valencia can keep crossing how he did yesterday they be no need to replace him, buts it's a big if

I don't think that a change in real estate would help us avoid this with him though.

Only at United, we have Darmian, Shaw, CBJ, TFM and Rojo who are taller than him.

Happy with Valencia. He really dominates that right flank when in the mood to. He might have an off game here and there but more often than not, you know what he provides to the team.

Hopefully Darmian comes back to the form he showed in the first month; he was solid. No need to buy anyone new this season! Perhaps within the next two unless TFM makes it his own.

Valencia should be our first choice RB. His final delivery is erratic but he is very good player to have the team. Carrick said few years back how Valencia carrying the ball 40-50 yards pushes the team up and relieves the pressure. There isn't a better player in our team to do that may be except Martial.

I agree. Valencia biggest problems as RB was with positioning and few lapses of concentration. But he is strong, fast, hard to beat one on one. And carries the ball forward very well. In attacking minded side he will be ok.

Yeah he switches off many times. Something that can be worked out imo. It would be good to see how Jose can improve his game as RB.

I like Valencia at right back... he doesn't make many defensive errors at all contrary to this strange opinion that he 'switches off' and gets caught out of position. Watching other full backs in the league he's not prone to mistakes at all in comparison and certainly far less than all our other full backs, Shaw aside. I've just spent the last season watching Rojo and Darmian get sat down by any strong or tricky winger with a bit of pace. I can't really recall this being an issue for Valencia who is almost always quicker and stronger than the players he is defending against.

Other than being a bit better at crossing as he does seem to hit the defenders legs all too frequently... I'm not sure what more he could do. It's only watching us struggle on the right flank without him that you realise how much better he is. Playing Valencia, I find frequently the opposing team's left side are largely neutralised because they can't get forward and attack as he's busy making them defend.

Still think Darmian will come good.
Excellent. Send him out on loan, and after he's come good bring him back.
Valencia has 0 Goals and 6 assists in his two years as a right back.
7 assists since he returned from injury last April (including friendlies). I'm including the free-kick he won on the edge of the Wigan area as a assist, because it was. Play the form player.

It's not a 'strange opinion' to say he switches off. He does. And he does so frequently. He's not a natural full-back. He has spent his entire career thinking offensively. His errors aren't always noted by some because he relies on other players bailing him out, thus meaning Valencia isn't culpable for directly conceding a goal but rather the initial mistake.

Friendlies don't count mate, though i certainly hope he carries those assists into the season proper.

My issue is that Valencia does not make any more errors than any other decent full-back... in fact, I think he probably makes less than most The problem is, a lot of fans seem to think that a defender should never make an error which is completely unrealistic and unfortunately for Valencia, if he makes one then it's because 'he's not a proper full-back' or he can't defend because he used to be a winger. The analysis is lazy and his errors are not frequent.

Also, what is Valencia's natural position by the way? I keep hearing he's not a natural full-back. Is he a natural winger then? He never grew up playing on the wing. He played centre midfield or striker as a young player in Ecuador before coming to Europe and being converted into a right winger... and the nature of what you might consider a natural full-back is very different to what it might have been 20 years ago. Now there is a lot more emphasis on the attacking side of the game.

For two seasons now ive failed to understand how people dont see Valencias flaws. He'd be adequate for a midtable table team (and tbf even we cant have a top player in every position) but someone here actually thinks he's the best in the league. I only assume its people who cant stop liking a player.

Darmain was poor but he deserves another shot before hes written off. Ideally we'd go out and get a proper defender but i doubt its a priority at all.

But he does make more mistakes than others in his position.

After all, if he wasn't culpable for mistakes, what reason would we have for this debate? People that question his defending are right to do so, because they observe his errors.

I'd argue that transitioning from full-back to winger is an easier transition than winger to full-back. You need to possess the defensive capabilities in the first place to be able to drop further back.

Valencia has the strength, speed and stamina required of a full-back, whilst also operating as an auxiliary winger. I am fine with that, if and only if he can be disciplined and coached effectively enough to vastly improve his positional awareness. Valencia doesn't hold the line at all well. Sometimes he'll step up too soon. Other times he won't step up at all. That is avoidable.

I don't see the necessity in playing Valencia at right back unless Mourinho believes he can instil a defensive solidity to his game.

More than happy to be proved wrong.

Im more than content with Darmian and valencia right now.

Darmian started last year brilliantly, and while he regressed badly, its his first season, everyone should get more than that to prove themselves under a new manager.

And with valencia you get a solid 7/10 athlete.

For guys who aren't content with either Damian or Valencia please list your realistic targets.

If José can get Darmian up to speed, I am ok with him as first choice and Valencia as back up. I don't mind Riley considered as 3rd choice really!

That time he got between 2 Liverpool players with incredible pace and then dithered but somehow managed to win a penalty.

Showing both his biggest asset and biggest weakness at the same time.

This is the most lame excuse I have ever heard about Darmian. Darmian has been playing poorly since mid of September. He's been playing regular as a right back from August to October, when he was poor he got his chance. Unfortunately this is Manchester United not a mid table club. If he keeps playing poor, someone else will take his spot and he will be benched, we can't afford to keep playing any players who are not performing.
