Our Right Back Position

'Valencia top 3 RBs in the world' :)

Tony V is many things but he isn't the greatest RB. He will put a shift in, he will track up and down that line like a Labrador chasing a plastic bag. He will also put in the odd cross that beats the first man whilst no doubt be caught out in the air every so often.

Fingers crossed what you say is true...

You just described a "top RB".

Contrary to popular belief:
- RB's don't always beat their man
- RB's don't always win the 50/50 balls in the air
- RB's don't always put pin point crosses to the strikers

Sometimes I wonder what RB's do people watch. Such high, flawless expectations have to come from somewhere.

Absolutely spot on.

I was surprised to see the club didn't buy a RB, but on the other hand: who would it be? World class RB's are rare. Hopefully TFM will get his minutes and will develop into a world class RB.

From how people criticize Tony V you would think RB's get 10-15 assists a season and score 10 goals

Surely those three bullet points could apply to any PL full back? Maybe even Championship? Hardly a 'top' RB IMO

Anyway, whilst my description was a bit tongue in cheek, I would just say he a dependable RB. Very very fit but offers little in possession. His crossing has been suspect over the last few seasons but I like him and he seems to have a great work ethic. Would love to see him improve and prove me wrong, for sure.

My point was he is not in the top 3 RBs in the world - you just can't compare him to someone like Alves as there is such a big difference in ability.

Valencia's the man. I was a big critic of his two years ago in the same position, but hes proved me wrong and really grown into that role.

If a Shaw level talent in the RB position becomes available, we should go for it. Until then, it's better to stick with what we've got.

Well full members can't see the newbie section so i'll take your word for it mate.

In all seriousness mate not being a dick genuine question, what are you basing rating Valencia's offensive capabilities so highly on?

Over the last 4 years (and i hate to say it as he is one of my favourite players) but he has been woeful going forward. I just don't see where you're coming from, his performance last night was Valencia going forward over the last few years in a nutshell. Lots of running up the pitch then stopping, stalling, turning and passing back. Not taking a man on or beating him and of course a few obligatory shin smashes to win a corner. He put in one nice cross that i remember.
To be fair, I think there was a lot of truth in what Mourinho said yesterday - Valencia suffered under LVG's "pass it back" tactics. And before that he had a lot of underlying injury problems. If he can stay fit I think Valencia has the tools to be one of the best attacking full backs in the PL

Well heres hoping if he is going to be our first choice RB.

But Valencia wasn't stifled going forward because of LVG he was equally ineffective for two years before Van Gaal came. I think it was largely psychological as he went from being a machine at the end of the 2011/12 season beating fullbacks and pumping in crosses for fun to turn back Tony and a shin smash specialist in Fergusons last season. Signs are promising that hes getting his confidence back though.

That was due to the underlying injury problems I was talking about - it was to do with his back, which can also become psychological for a player reliant on pace

Not saying you're wrong but i can't recall him having back problems.

But yeah if he did have back problems that can really affect you. I've had them before and a flare up recently and does limit what you can do and i imagine for a footballer it's much worse.

Bailly is also a right back. Pretty comfortable there by all accounts, so I could see a situation where we play Bailly, Blind, Smalling and Shaw as the back four. Its not like we just have Darmian and Valencia. But it seems obvious by yesterday that Jose wants crosses into the box. At the first opportunity he wants Valencia to float one onto Zlatan's head. I can honestly see a situation this year where Ibra gets about 15 goals on his head from Valencia's crossing. The way he played pre-season and what Mourinho said post match, Valencia is being re-programmed to be what he was in 2010.
