Owen Hargreaves' injuries | Fergie: I don't see him playing again this season

He's reporting to pre season training but not going on the tour. His return date is set on the first week of October (It was daily mail, can't find the link. There's his own website OwenHargreaves4.com which said something similar.

SAF says Hargreaves will be back in September

It now seems that Hargreaves will join up with his team-mates when they head to Munich for the Audi Cup at the end of the month.

"I think we are looking at the end of September depending on how he reacts," said Ferguson. "We are happy with his rehabilitation so far and while he won't be ready to play in Munich, he will be able to train."

Manchester United's Owen Hargreaves is likely to return to action in September, says boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

The 28-year-old midfielder has not played since the start of last season following two operations to cure a tendinitis problem in both knees.

He was ruled out of the current Asian tour but could join the squad for the Audi Cup in Germany in two weeks.

"We are happy with his rehabilitation and while he won't be ready to play in Munich, he will train," Ferguson said.

"I think we are looking at the end of September depending on how he reacts."

A 22-man United squad arrived in Malaysia in Friday ahead of their Far East tour - a trip which has had to exclude Monday's planned match in Indonesia following a bomb attack on the Jakarta hotel they were going to stay in.

Hargreaves will be desperate to reignite his United career, having only started 25 times since a £17m move from Bayern Munich in July 2007.

It has been a frustrating spell at Old Trafford for the Canadian-born midfielder, who last played for United in the 1-1 draw with Chelsea on 21 September 2008.

Hargreaves had surgery on his right knee last November and on his left knee in January, with the procedures carried out under the guidance of American knee surgeon Richard Steadman.

The leading surgeon has previously operated on Alan Shearer, new signing Michael Owen and former Reds striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, who is now at Real Madrid.

Hargreaves' rehabilitation has had to be a long and delicate process, with BBC Sport revealing in June that he could be forced to quit top-level football in the next two years if the chronic knee problem were to persist.

His condition, patellar tendinitis, can be described as inflammation of the tendon that attaches the quadriceps (thigh muscle) to the tibia (shin bone).

Hargreaves will be joined in Germany at the end of the month by centre-half Nemanja Vidic and summer signing Antonio Valencia, who have also missed the trip to Malaysia, South Korea and China.

Vidic has not fully recovered from an ankle injury he picked up playing for Serbia last month, while winger Valencia - seen as a replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo - needed to go back to Ecuador to gain a UK visa following his move from Wigan.

Ferguson also revealed that new signing defender Gabriel Obertan would miss the first three months of the season with an injury which was already known about when he signed from Bordeaux.

Four days after stating that United would not be taking on any new players, Ferguson said on Friday that they had secured the services of striker Mame Biram Diouf from Molde.

The 21-year-old is due to attend a medical in Manchester next week and will be loaned back to the Norwegian club until January.

Ferguson, speaking in Kuala Lumpur ahead of their first tour match on Saturday against a Malaysia XI, said: "We've been looking at him for two years.

"We weren't intending on signing anyone else - we feel we have a full squad - but the situation accelerated to a point where other clubs started to make bids. We decided to act and he'll be the last person we sign."
 
All the media outlets saying September now. This is massive news for us. He will be a key player for us when he gets match fit in November maybe!
 
He'll probably want at least 6-8 weeks of training without any setbacks before even thinking about playing I reckon. At least it's some progress.

As expected Rio Ferdinand and Edwin van der Sar miss Arsenal's OT visit on Saturday, but United are boosted by news that Owen Hargreaves returns to the club on 23 September.

The midfielder hasn't played for a year, during which time he's had operations on both knees to solve his tendonitis problems, so that return date is not his playing comeback. He's been doing rehabilitation work in America this summer and United first must assess at what stage he is at in terms of his recovery. Nevertheless, Sir Alex says his impending return is "a great addition to us".

"We're in dialogue all the time with Owen and the physio who's conducting his rehabilitation in America," the boss said on Friday. "He'll come with Owen for a week for the change-over so we can jointly understand the treatment and rehabilitation he's been doing. That's straightforward.

"The difficulty is getting him back into football work. I say difficult because we've not seen him all this time. We're relying on information we get from the States. We're certain that his fitness work will be good, we just have to guage the right time to bring him into football training. You don't have a player out for a year and then just throw him straight into the fire.

"The important thing is to get him back playing to his level, which is a very good level, because he'll be a great addition to us."

In the short-term, only Rio and Edwin miss out on Saturday's tea-time clash with Arsenal. "Everyone else is OK," said Sir Alex. "Although Rafael is still long term." Rio said this week that he expects to return for the Tottenham game on 12 September, but Sir Alex added: "We think it'll be longer than that. We think it'll be the week after that."

Will be great to get Owen back to Carrington. A player like that is a massive morale-booster for any treatment room, the last thing tour doctors and trainers want is an asset like that turning out for some foreign medical outfit thousands of miles away.

Back at Carrington, not back in full training.

I'd say there's a long road ahead of him yet. I'd be surprised given what I'm hearing if he plays much of a role before Christmas. Hopefully I'm wrong though.

SIR Alex Ferguson is vowing to take a softly-softly approach with Owen Hargreaves when the midfielder returns to Manchester United next month.

It is almost 12 months since Hargreaves was sent to respected knee specialist Dr Richard Steadman for ground-breaking operations on both legs to try to cure a tendinitis problem which has plagued him since his £18million move from Bayern Munich in 2007.

After doing all his rehabilitation work in the United States, the time is fast approaching for Hargreaves to come back to Manchester and see whether the operations have been enough to get him back on the pitch again.

Ferguson is confident the 28-year-old will return with a decent level of fitness. However, he is determined not to push Hargreaves too quickly too soon.

"Owen comes back on September 23," he said. "We are in dialogue with him all the time and the physio who is doing his rehabilitation over there will be coming with him for a week for the changeover.

"It means we can jointly understand all the treatments and rehabilitation he has been doing.

"The difficult part will be to get him back into the football side.

"We are certain his fitness will be good and his endurance work will have been done.

"But you don't have a player who has been out for over a year and suddenly throw him back into the fire right away.

"We will take our time because the important thing is to get him playing to the right level. Once we have done that he will be a tremendous addition for us."

I don't think he exists.

In the original Battlestar Galactica (where Starbuck was played by Dirk Benedict, whose son incidentally played for Gillingham!) they did find the Earth eventually.

But it turned out to be shit.

Hopefully we will see him back soon and then we might get to see the best of him. He will be a great asset if fit and available.

Yes, I remember. Earth was a pointless, low budget place, populated by farmers, bikers, and Wolfman Jack.

Didn't know that about Benedict's son, though.

If Hargreaves really comes good, there would be a lot more options.

Options on the right of midfield, options for central midfield, options for another freekick taker, and also another hardworking terrier-like midfielder biting at the heels of the opposition playmakers.
