Owen Hargreaves' injuries | Fergie: I don't see him playing again this season

If Hargreaves really comes good, there would be a lot more options.

Options on the right of midfield, options for central midfield, options for another freekick taker, and also another hardworking terrier-like midfielder biting at the heels of the opposition playmakers.

A solid option from the spot as well

You've got to remember. IF he comes back in September as the media is reporting, this just means he will rejoin the club. He probably hasn't done any football specific training in almost a year. His conditioning while good, can only be so good from riding a bike or elliptical.

In all likelihood you are going to see Hargreaves eased back into full time training, probably 2 or 3 weeks to see how the knees hold up. At which point he will probably start to train hard and get back his football specific fitness. All this time he will be working on his technique and trying to shake the rust.

I would think if we get him back training in September, it might be Christmas before we see him in a competitive game.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is lining Owen Hargreaves up as his new free-kick king.

The departure of Cristiano Ronaldo for Real Madrid has left United looking for a new dead-ball expert.

Ryan Giggs has stepped into the breach so far this term, scoring against Tottenham, then again in Wednesday's Champions League triumph over Wolfsburg, thanks to the aid of a massive deflection.

Yet Ferguson knows he will not be able to rely on the veteran Welshman all season.

And, remembering Hargreaves' precise strike against Arsenal in April last year, Ferguson is looking forward to the midfielder's recovery from knee surgery with eager anticipation.

"Outside Cristiano Ronaldo, I don't think there is a better deliverer of set pieces than Owen," said the United boss.

"That is one of the areas in which he may help us more.

"People may look upon free-kicks as minimal. I see them as an added detail to a football team.

"Ronaldo could get three or four goals like that. We are still searching for someone else. If Owen can do it, that will be a bonus for us."

Ferguson has previously indicated Hargreaves could be back in action by the beginning of next month as he comes to the end of a lengthy rehabilitation process following revolutionary surgery to cure a tendinitis problem that developed in both knees prior to his exit from Bayern Munich.

As someone equally adept in central midfield or right-back, Hargreaves would be a useful addition to the present United squad.

And, while Ferguson is reluctant to expect too much too quickly from a player who has been sidelined for an entire year, and plagued by injury before that, the Scot admits the signs are encouraging.

"It gives me another problem, but it is one I welcome," he said.

"He is coming along fine. His physio has gone back to America so he is completely in our control now and hopefully he will be back into football training quite soon.

"The signs are good. There has been absolutely no reaction to the operations.

"It has been a long road for the boy but he made a sacrifice by staying in America for a year to make sure he was right.

"That shows a good determination to come back and do well."

Our midfield is cramped as it is. Since the emergence of Fletcher, we don't really need him. I think he will have his work cut out for him, getting back into the team.

Hargreaves is a quality player.

Eagerly waiting for him to get back.

Many here are under estimating him imo.

Would be a good boost to our options at right midfield and another option at right back. We started the season very thin there, so thats always good to have. And his set pieces would be a real bonus. Just keep him away from the middle of the pitch.

From Sky Sports:

Ferguson added: "He is coming along fine. His physio has gone back to America so he is completely in our control now and hopefully he will be back into football training quite soon.

Does Fergie need to be so down on America? I'm off the drink my sorrows away with Dwight Yorke because SAF is such a mean prick.

By sacrifice he most likely meant away from home for a year - I very much doubt he had any intentions of putting the country down.

Chin up Rob

It'd be good to have him back but people shouldn't have high expectations from him this season.

He hasn't played a competitive match for what. 1 1/2 years or so now. Thats a long ass time. You can't just slot back into the routine of things.

Our midfield is cramped as it is. Since the emergence of Fletcher, we don't really need him. I think he will have his work cut out for him, getting back into the team.

I don't think he will be rushed into the team, nor will he be a regular starter either. He was signed to add some energy and combativeness to our midfield i think, and provided he slowly returns to form and staying clear of more injuries i still think he will play a fairly big role in our campaign this season.

Chuck him in at the deep end, play him today

Hargreaves came on for Montenegro after 70 minutes in the match against Norway today, but failed to impress. Pretty anonymous appearance, but good to see him back in action!

Man Utd midfielder Hargreaves makes new visit to Dr Steadman

Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves has repaid a visit to knee specialist Dr Richard Steadman.

The Daily Star says Hargreaves, 29 would have been at the World Cup but for a last-minute intervention by manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Instead he has been to Colorado to see the surgeon who operated on both knees to try to cure tendonitis. United do not expect Hargreaves to go under the knife again.

Last season Hargreaves played only one minute in the first team yet was initially named in England's 30-man squad.

He did more in that minute than most of England's team did in 90

That's just about the most pointless piece of journalism I've ever seen.

I thought they were going to say that hes got a problem with his knee again but thats just them reporting he sent flowers after the great work he did

MICHAEL OWEN and Owen Hargreaves have given Manchester United a massive boost by declaring themselves fit for pre-season training.

The first-team squad - excluding the World Cup stars - are due back on July 5 but both Owen and Hargreaves have already been in at the Red Devils' Carrington training ground to work with the fitness team.

Owen has worked ferociously to recover from the knee injury that cut short his season.

The United staff have been impressed with his dedication and are convinced he is ready to take a full part in pre-

season and the club's tour of America and Canada.

Owen will be joined by Hargreaves, who is over his 20-month injury crisis.

The England midfielder managed a brief end-of-season bow against Sunderland after crippling tendinitis threatened his career.

He has recently returned from a trip to Colorado, where he continues to receive treatment.

But there have been no ill-effects and Hargreaves has been able to maintain a high-intensity training programme through the summer, much to the relief of manger Sir Alex Ferguson and England boss Fabio Capello.

Capello even considered Hargreaves as part of the pre-World Cup party until Fergie made it clear the player was not match-fit.

The FA's medical staff, however, have been monitoring his fitness with Capello pencilling Hargreaves in for an international return in September for the start of the Euro 2012 qualifiers.

From Today's NOTW

Granted the source in not that great but still excellent news for us.

hargo was already fit by the end of the season , wasnt he ?
and the owen bit was in the papers a week ago .. smalling will apparently be at carrington in a week as well .

owen , owen , smalling , javier
new signings

Good news as this is, you'd have thought that even the NOTW would have known that Owen's injury was his hamstring and not his knee. Lazy journo's, should have verified what they had written, now I'm just speculative as to the validity of it all.

Honestly, I just wish we'd never signed anyone with Owen in their name.

Lets hope that Hargreaves can recover and get some form back. It's going to be a very tough challenge for the lad. I can't wait to see his poodle hair bouncing around the pitch again :)
