Patrice Evra | 2012/13 Performances

I thought he was quite good today through most parts of the game.

Apart from his mistimed against Sterling I can't really remember him doing much wrong.

But Evra and Nani seem to be the favorite scapegoats these days, even though it's sometimes justified I feel like people are slating the two just out of principle sometimes.

Overall our back four was pretty good today and saved us a few times from going down if there was any area of the pitch where we really struggled it was our midfield.

Evra and Evans were solid and Rafael and Rio really good today.

People are always talking about how Buttner arriving will give Evra a kick up the arse because his place in the team will not be automatic but it's always looked to me like his problems have not been mental but physical. I really don't think Evra's gone lazy or complacent, he's just not the same as he used to be physically, both because he's the wrong side of 30 and because he's played pretty much every game these last couple of games. We need to be able to rest him now and then and I think that's where Buttner will be good for us. He's not gonna play Evra out of the team but he is hopefully gonna be a solid backup player in that position so we can rest Evra more than we've been doing these last few years.

Having said that I didn't think Evra was that bad today. Did get beaten a few times but you have to give credit to Sterling in that regard and not just criticize Evra. Sterling has pace and trickery and will cause most full-backs in these league a lot of problems.

Yeah I think that's pretty much the reason we got Buttner.

Evra once could run down the left an entire game without needing much of a pause but over the last couple of years you can almost guarantee that if he goes forward he won't be back in time to defend.

Of course the fact that he almost played every single game for us over the last 3-4 years is taking a toll on him too, so let's hope he can be rested every now and then against smaller teams so we can have more of his better performances again.

Decent. Positioning is far better. Still getting skinned far too often though, and was lucky to avoid a yellow for the tackle on Sterling on the edge of the box.

What great let off was this? I mean what did Sterling actually do in this game? He had a couple of openings in the first half which didn't amount to much, and he got in behind Evra in the second half, but then Evra closed him down well and again, it didn't come to anything.

I think he put about 2 or 3 crosses in the whole game in fact...

He was one of their more dangerous players. To take him off for Henderson was basically giving up on the win. He got the better of Evra quite a few times and managed to find space in behind him or was allowed to carry the ball across the edge of our area.

I say again, what did he actually do that hurt us? As you say, he got the better of Evra a few times, but then he would either allow Evra to recover in time, or someone else would deal with him... or it just wouldn't amount to much. You're right in that he looked dangerous, but I'm not sure how much danger it all actually amounted too.

Well he didn't score or assist, so he didn't do anything if you look at it like that. But my point is that he looked dangerous ie. he could have done something if he was left on, hence it being a let off. It certainly allowed Evra to move forward more freely.

Evra relishing fight for place

After his form was criticised last season, Evra's position has come under greater scrutiny this year following the arrival of Buttner from Vitesse Arnhem.

Evra is unlikely to be dropped at the moment. However, Buttner made a pleasing debut against Wigan earlier this month and is likely to get another chance to impress in Wednesday night's Capital One Cup third-round tie with Newcastle.

Yet Evra does not feel under any more pressure because Buttner is breathing down his neck.

"Football is like a pyramid," he said. "It is easy to reach the top of the pyramid but to stay there is the hardest part.

"It is too easy for people to say that now we have bought another left-back Patrice Evra will have to fight for his place. Patrice Evra has always fought for his place.

"If someone is there or not I will fight because you have to respect the shirt. When you play for Manchester United that is the big challenge."

Besides which, Evra feels that those who regard his six-year United career as being a relatively easy ride have very short memories.

"When I hear people say Patrice never had someone to fight him for his place I think they have bad memories," he said.

"They forget very quickly how I got to become Manchester United's left-back. I fought with two great players in Gabriel Heinze and Mikael Silvestre."

And the demands are even greater following a season of failure.

The margin between triumph and disaster last season might have been one stoppage time goal by Sergio Aguero, but to Evra it could just as well be a chasm.

And he is acutely aware that under such circumstances, Ferguson will be keeping a very close eye on those whose standards may be slipping.

"When you play for Manchester United any year you don't win the title you feel like you haven't done your job," he said.

"I am not special. If I end up on the bench it will be because I didn't play well. I accept that. Even if we lose I will always blame myself.

"This year the boss will give no presents to anybody. It should be difficult for him to pick his eleven players.

"Maybe last year there wasn't enough competition on every part of the pitch."

He's saying the right sort of things at least... hopefully it'll reflect onto the pitch as well (though I think he's been okay so far this season...).

Mainly posting this because I rather like how he's refering to himself in the 3rd person... mental bastard

Just watching the Liverpool match again, and Evra was bloody great! His defensive work was mostly tidy and spot on and certainly saved our arse a couple of times. Going forward he looked very good in the second half when our attacking worked better too. As I've said before, he looks to have regained some of his pace - Sterling certainly wasn't able to outpace him once.

That pyramid analogy was shit. Buttman would have come up with a better analogy. Paddy's finished.

Thought Evra was great yesterday - arguably our best man. Had Lennon, who has been good this season, in his pocket. Looked eager going forward and defended well. I think the man deserves some praise too!

He was good in defence, but offered nothing going forward.

Maybe you are right, I didn't follow him that closely yesterday, but I really think he offered almost nothing going forward, I rarely noticed him playing yesterday.

Really? Nearly scored a goal, linked up well with no winger to really link up with and had some decent crosses/passes into the box.

He was great in 2nd half. Why can't he pull his socks n play like this all the time?
We don't expect brilliant performance each time but for God sake, give your best

In the first half he was ok, was a bit scared of Lennon but much better second half defensively and offensively.

How could Evra not be scared of Lennon? He's been outpaced on numerous occasions, but oddly enough, not once last match. I thought Evra did great and should get some praise for that.

He often blames Evra for the goals we conceede, and he is right.

Seeing them again properly Evra should have came inside and closed the huge gap between himself and Rio, likewise with Evans. Dempsey had a free run into the box because Evans was already pre occupied by Defoe. Bale just ran into space and Rio wasn't going to catch him, where was Evra? jogging back.

Enough is enough. He's fecking shit these days.

Total and utter liability.

Weak link these days, been defensively suspect for years but got away with it thanks to the brilliance of vidic and Edwin. Now it is more apparent than ever. Been agreat servant has pat but it's time to move him on

50 per cent him, 50 per cent Evans.

Watch Evra's positioning before, during and after the ball comes over. It's like it's got to the point where even he's doubting himself. All over the place.

Beaten by player with pace and dangerous balls ensue. Currently an every game feature of Evra's play

It has become really normal to expect a mistake from him in every 2-3 matches.
