Manchester United are lining up a £22 million move for Barcelona keeper Victor Valdes.

Sir Alex Ferguson is desperate to sign a long-term replacement for Edwin van der Sar with Ben Foster still considering his future at Old Trafford.

The United boss sees Valdes as a top quality replacement and cannot, yet, offer Foster the first-team football he craves in his bid to make England's World Cup team.

The Barcelona keeper's current deal finishes in June 2010.

And, having rejected the chance to open talks on a new contract, Fergie hopes the lure of Premier League football can snatch him away from La Liga.

Van der Sar agreed a one-year extension earlier this season but, at 38, Fergie knows he needs to find a world-class replacement.

Valdes would challenge the Dutch shot-stopper next season and with his experience not only in La Liga, but also the Champions League, the 27-year-old has all the qualities needed.

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp is interested in taking Foster, but there are sure to be a number of other clubs looking at the young shot-stopper.

Ferguson is planning for Valdes to be at Old Trafford next season.

Redknapp, meanwhile, is preparing to offload £55m quartet David Bentley, Darren Bent, Roman Pavlyuchenko and Michael Dawson.

He has told scouts that his priorities are to sign a 'world-class defender' to cover for Ledley King and a 'world-class striker' to link up with Robbie Keane and Jermain Defoe.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has made it clear Redknapp will have to sell before he can buy and this could spell the end of Bentley, Bent, Pavlyuchenko and Dawson, who all have high sell-on values.

Spurs sources say Redknapp is sifting through his options as he considers how to raise money to beef up a squad that has drastically underperformed this season.

Ive seen some bizarre transfer links but this takes the biscuit. And £22 million.. Surely a complete load of bollocks.

And I thought the story about Valdes claiming Barcelona have the best defenders in the world was weird. I wouldnt pay 22p for him.

I would actually cry if we spent £22m on Valdes.

Such bollocks though, how on earth do you get a job writing this shit.

Nowhere near Utd quality.

i would love to work as a football reporter - it seems you need no football knowledge whatsoever

i wouldnt pay 2 million for valdes

yep, with VdS on his last legs we will now be linked with every major keeper in world football. Its going to be alot of transfer bollox ahead!

I still don't know what I think about Foster - just how good is he? Time will tell I guess and it would be amazing if he could be our next keeper given his age and the long term security that would give us in such a pivotal position .... but I have a feeling that SAF does not rate him highly enough to be our future No1.

He used to be quite good two years ago, I think.

But he's pretty average now.

Didn't he fall with the ball in the goal against Liverpool two season ago?

He has always made mistakes, pathetic keeper. Worse than Kuzschak.

PIG and Valdes are pretty much the same. Both can be good shot stoppers on their day and do something quite good to prevent a goal, a one on one, a penalty stop, etc. They are capable of doing good things in goal. But then from the resulting corner they'll turn the ball into their own goal or something ridiculous like that.

Or get scored on by the oppositions keeper, which is true for both Kuszczak and Foster.

It's nice to hear we re linked with Barca's weak link.....that is for Barca fans...

That is a ridiculous thing to say. Valdes is a good keeper. He is certainly not pathetic nor worse than Pig.

Even the Barca chairman admitted he was shit recently, saying something along the lines of "our team is very strong but obviously we're weak in the goalkeeper department and that's something we'll look at in the summer".

I'm pretty sure Valdes will leave this summer, but there's no way he's coming to OT, and no fecking way on Earth that he'll go for more than £5m
