Brilliant player, one of those who recieved unnecessary stick during the U21's purely because Smalling was THAT good, but nonetheless, these two will be pushing each other to world class achievements barring injuries. Very astute signing considering the nature of Rio's persistent problems.
I think it was possibly his mistake (or Smallings maybe) that let him in behind but he recovery tackle was nothing short of outstanding.
What a beast, he's only 19 but built like a brick shit house. He has quality too, he's not just a man mountain.

Not too much to add. He's a wonderful, ball playing CB. That's why we look so assured so far this season, partly, our young defenders are so comfortable with playing ourselves out of defence along the ground. Anderson and Cleverley showing themselves for the ball so eagerly helps. I'll add on thing though, he ain't half got some pace on him!

I now reckon I've sussed SAFs masterplan to feck Barca in the final - 5 quality centre backs stopping their players getting anywhere near the goal, and a few really quick players benefiting on the counter
Surprise find of the season for me. He is going to be top top class for many long years for us. Him and Smalling have every chance to succeed Vidic and Rio in the future.

It's frustrating that Evans' performance will be ignored. He was also superb.
I wonder who will play alongside Jones this season, Rio or Vidic? He won't be dropped.

People say he's the new Terry, the new Rio, the new Vidic, but he reminds me more of Lucio than anyone else. Uncompromising, cofident, a natural leader and adept at carrying the ball out of defence and setting up attacks.
Lucio is suspect positionally, he's nothing like him. I think he'll be the world best defender in 2 or 3 years.

To be fair, Evan's is coming off a poor season so his 'image' is fighting that. It's just how it works. But Evans was indeed superb.
I agree. I still can't make up my mind for the top 3 players as there were, to me, at least five who deserve a mention.
Yeah, I can definitely see him as a contender for captain in these coming years. He shows such leadership on the pitch with his confidence, presence, and resolute defending.

This 'Vidic with pace' thing is a bit silly, really. Vidic with pace would basically be the perfect defender.
No player is perfect and Jones' positioning is one of his weaker traits. All you've done is proven my point that little bit more. He's more like Lucio than any other defender he keeps being compared with, and that's nothing to be ashamed of because Lucio is one of the world's best centre backs over the last decade or so.
What an Amazing Defender. He really does have all the attributes to be a world class Center Back. Aggressive, strong in the tackle, Composed, good distribution, quick, and reads the game well. I'm pretty sure i have listed all the attributes required by a center back.

True. I m not usually so bullish about young players, however jones is something special. He s a one off... and fergie knows it. We are overstocked at the back but fergie admitted that he couldn t lose out on such a good player.
Capello also singled him out as the one player from the current u21 that he sure he ll be a regular for the senior team(apart from wilshere).

I hope he's that good. But I don't see Smalling as any lesser. He's been sensational since in his time with us.
