Phil Jones

Sorry yeah, that line up is based on theory.

Carrick sitting a little deeper than he has been, three very good passers, one of which has great positional sense, the other two who are free moving and pacey.

Agreed, hope we'll get to see them together at some point this season.

This guy is a freaking beast. I am so happy we got him and if he continues to play like this, the £16m we spent of him will not seem so much after all.

Faster pace game on a smaller pitch and he really doesn't look comfortable out there. All good experience for him but he's a weak link for us at the moment.

(here's hoping this now means he scores a hat-trick in the last half hour)

Pogue, was this posted with a half hour of the game remaining? Must admit, that shocks me somewhat, coming from a perceptive and knowledgeable poster like your good self!

As I thought Jones was very good today, throughout, I'm curious as to where you felt he was falling short?

Don't think he put a foot wrong after my bump. Big feck you in my face.

Indeed, thought it was a bit strange that you called him out, when I personally thought he was having a good game. Still though, unlike many posters on here you seem happy to have been proven wrong and admitted it.

Think Jones/Carrick is starting to the rival Anderson/Cleverley form, from early in the season.

I think Jones is actually a bit lacking in his ball-playing capabilities to play long term in midfield unless of course that part of his game improves.

Definitely agree though playing him at centre half would waste his engine, if he learns how to coolly slot the ball away as well, we have an amazing asset in the middle.

I dunno, he's far from technically poor and you don't need to be technically brilliant to play in the middle, just sound. He's got a reliable first touch, a good pass and he carries the ball well, so I think he's got a solid base there. Against a team that presses really intensely and really packs the midfield maybe he will be found lacking, but he's only young and he's still only 19 and adding to his game so I say give him some time and have a bit of patience and he might surprise us all.

Right back could be the one though. I'd not be surprised if Sir Alex said he still didn't know where his best position was yet.

Only 19 and yet so accomplished. He's growing into the midfield role. Admittedly the last two games have been against poor sides, however you have to wonder what he could develop into if Fergie decided to keep him there.

He could become a top draw midfielder. Honestly, I no longer know what his best position is.

I think we know for now Chief. He is of much more use to us in the middle at present than he would be at CB.

He and Carrick are looking very good together, and Jones ability to carry the ball forward id bringing more from out attackers too. they should have finished better today, but the chances are coming, and they are coming from good teamplay, which is always a good sign.

Up until recently I've been sure he would end up as a centre back, but now I don't know anymore. How often do you see 19 year old midfielders in the Premiership putting on performances like he's done the past week?

I don't care if we've played Wolves and QPR, the answer will still be very rarely. He's got the capacity to be an absolute beast in midfield.

Him and Carrick have a good thing going on in there. They complement each other well. He was very good, gives us that extra dimension with his break and ball carrying skills.

Very unlucky not to have scored today. He seemed so comfortable in midfield.Very good performance offensively, defensively and also in terms of linking up the play

As good as Adams, Giggs, Owen, Ronaldo, Rooney, Fabregas and Wilshire at this age. He really looks like he will become quite something.

But he is also awesome at fullback and center back too. Which is where my confusion stems from. He doesn't look out of position in any of those roles.

My concern with him in either of those roles is that they require a bit more concentration and positional nous. A mistake there and it usually results in a goal.

Additionally, most of his best contributions when played at either CB or RB have still been going forward. I have yet to see his defensive attributes look more impressive than his attacking ones. I would leave well alone for now and let his youthful enthusiasm continue to be of benefit to the attackers, especially while our midfield options are still relatively thin.

Robson'esque the commentator suggested.

Nineteen years old and running box to box, tackling, intercepting, distributing, attacking and either scoring or almost scoring.

Monster… That kind of all round talent is rare in midfileders and is wasted in defence.

Well, feck me... And here I was, saying this lad shouldn't be playing in midfield a game or two ago.

I thought he was decent against Wolves, and a beast today. His all-action style compliments Carrick's metronomic style, and the two of them tore QPR a new one.

His one-touch passing into our attackers was a surprise - I mean, I knew he had drive and hunger to break through the midfield, but his linking of play was much better. Only lacked a well deserved goal today!

Brings a lot of aggresivity to the CM, like Cleverley did earlier in the season. Always hustling and putting in tackles. Got the stamina to run box-to-box.

I'm definitely warming to the idea of Jones in midfield. His runs through the middle are so dangerous and difficult to stop because once he reaches top speed the midfielders aren't going to catch him which causes all sorts of problems for the defenders. This either gives him a huge gap (like the one for Carrick's goal, or where he passed it to Young instead of going through himself) to run through or draws defenders inwards which opens up spaces on the flanks.

Now, if he could just spend some time on the training ground practising his finishing he'd be a beast in midfield.

Well, i was one of those genius sorts that noticed he played more in midfield than defense for Blackburn, and decided to guess that meant he'd play well enough there. Wild guess, of course, having seen less than an hour of him as a midfielder.

After his play at fullback for us you could begin to see it, but there was no way to know he'd be so impressive. He's improved quite a bit from his first game in midfield, he had a nice run or two but he was all over the place positionally and not that hard to circumvent.

Health permitting, I think we may have found our young box to box midfielder to mold to the united way.

He's brilliant, isn't he?

Incredibly complete for a player of ANY age, forget a 19 year old. He seems too good an overall footballer to be a centre back. But I think it is important to see how he does in tighter games where his ball retention amongst other relatively central midfield specific aspects are truly tested.

Solved his role brilliantly well in the most congested of matches vs Spain.

It's funny that Jones wouldn't have had this chance to emerge as a potential United midfielder without all our injury problems. One man's crisis is another man's opportunity.

Yeah, I wish I could find that comment someone made about Ronaldinho being a good player for Barcelona - and that was during his prime. This one is probably up there as the understatement of the century.

Huh? I was confused by this. You bumped it saying he was a weak link about an hour into today's game? Odd....

Play him at centre back and just look what we'd be missing out on. He'd be wasted there. Absolutely wasted.

My mate told me yesterday that Phil is wort player he ever saw at Man United

Absolutely brilliant game from him today. This kid looks the real deal.
