Thread might have been before but I’m waiting around to go out & am bored so why not run it back. Pick your team based on 1 season of the player, as the 14/15 David De Gea & the 19-20 David De Gea for example are very different animals

Heres mine

De Gea (14/15)

Valencia (17/18)
Smalling (15/16)
Maguire (20/21)
Shaw (20/21)

Herrera (16/17)
Pogba (18/19)
Bruno (20/21)

Rashford (19/20)
Rooney (13/14)
Martial (19/20)

I don't think you'll get any other variation of this tbh.

Ibra over Rooney is a shout.
Carrick over Herrera as well.
Bruno 19/20 was better and I'd rather have Martial 14/15.

I would switch Rooney with Ibrahimovic.

Other than that it's pretty much spot on. Pogba and Herrera make an unbalanced midfield, but it's harsh to remove either of them. Carrick dropped off quickly post Fergie and Matic doesn't deserve it over the other two.

This one but with Carrick

De Gea 17/18
Valencia 16/17 Smalling 15/16 Maguire 19/20 Shaw 20/21
Carrick 14/15
Pogba 18/19 Bruno 20/21
Mata 14/15 Rooney 13/14 Rashford 19/20

Carrick is a good shout, absolutely class in his final few seasons. I’d probably take RVP from Moyes season too, still lethal, albeit less-so than the previous season.

DDG (15/16)
AWB (19/20) Smalling(15/16) Maguire (20/21) Shaw (20/21)
Carrick (14/15)
Bruno (20/21) Pogba (18/19)
Greenwood (19/20) Martial (19/20) Rashford (19/20)

Genuinely don’t remember half the seasons - certainly not 2013-2016 and not 2017-2019.

GK: De Gea 2017/18 (this really should be unanimous across the thread)

RB: Valencia 2016/17
CB: Maguire 2020/21
CB: Smalling 2015/16
LB: Shaw 2020/21

CM: Herrera 2016/17
CM: Pogba 2017/18
AM: Fernandes 2020/21
RM: Mata 2014/15
LM: Rashford 2020/21

ST: Martial 2019/20 / Ibrahimovic 2016/17 - can't decide who edges it

Edit: just looked at OP's post. We're nearly identical but I'm fairly sure Valencia was better in 2016/17 than the next season - he scored two complete bangers in '18 but forgot how to cross again - and De Gea in 2017/18 was literally the best season a keeper's had in PL history. Also not sure who's playing on the right wing in your team, though Rooney 13/14 is definitely worth considering in the XI. And Pogba was definitely at his best individually in 2018/19 but for the purpose of this hypothetical XI, I want him playing a more conservative role in a 2 so I'd go with the previous season.

Double edit: looking at the other posts now. Seems like half the people in here are interpreting the opening prompt their own way \M/

it was him or lindelof. I don’t think we signed any other centre backs since

Ah, it's signings post Fergie. I'd put Jones in there otherwise :p

Zlatan (16/17)
Rashford (19/20) - Bruno (20/21) - Lingard (17/18)
Herrera (16/17) - Pogba (17/18)
Shaw (20/21) - Maguire (19/20) - Smalling (15/16) - Valencia (16/17)
De Gea (17/18)

Lingard gets in due to a lack of right midfield options.

De Gea
Valencia - Maguire - Smalling - Shaw
Herrera - Pogba
Bruno
Greenwood - Zlatan - Rashford

Not many great options to choose from, to be honest.

Henderson
AWB
Maguire
Varane
Shaw
Fred
Pogba
Bruno
Rashford
Cavani
Sancho

Valdez
Darmian Blind Bailly Rojo
Basti Morgan S
ADM Miki Sanchez
Falcao

Pure and utter shite. Top recruitment practices.

That side cost roughly £250 million to put together. Throw Fellaini and Depay on the bench and that figure rises to £300 million+.

Urgh.

I'm going to do mine as all players not managed by Fergie.

Romero
AWB Maguire Rojo Telles
Matic
Pogba Fernandes
Di Maria Ibrahimovic Martial

Honourable mentions - Schweinsteiger, Cavani and Rashford

Varane and Sancho will probably be in here very soon.

Oles biggest strength has been getting rid of shit players and players with bad attitudes and bringing in good people and players. In my opinion he's still one season away from getting rid of those he wants out the club and completing his first 11.

He'll want rid of Jones, Lingard and Dalot for sure.

Cavani, Mata and atleast one of the CDMs will go next season to make way for the baller CDM and Striker that completes our first 11.

De Gea
AWB Varane Maguire Shaw
Baller CDM
Fernandes Pogba/replacement
Sancho Baller ST Rashford

I liked Blind but the rest of the team is the stuff of nightmares. Van Gaal has a lot to answer for, he signed 8 of those players in just over a year. The fecking loon.

I could probably only pick about 5 or 6 players that have had really good seasons since then.

De Gea 14 - 17
Maguire 20-21
Shaw 20-21
Bruno 20-21
Rashford 19-20
Zlatan 16-17

I honestly can't think of any other players who really put in memorable seasons. I might be forgetting one or two, but there were some truly forgettable years in terms of football and overall performance levels in there.

Obviously he has the final say and shares some responsibility, but those were his 3rd and 4th choices to be fair. Our entire transfer committee was a shambles.

DiMaria, Schweisteiger, Schneiderlin, Depay, Blind etc were 3rd or 4th choices? I find that hard to believe if I'm honest, might have been the case with one, two or even 3 of the 13 players he signed but not all of them.

And if some of them were not his 1st choice targets well that's what is bound to happen when you try to build a basically new team in 12 months with little or no plan. Van Gaal needlessly sold/released decent players and replaced them with inferior shite (bar Rat Face), wasted hundreds of millions and left the squad worse than he found it. It's only been in the last year, the best part of a decade later that we've managed to shift the last of those players on.

Zaha, Nani, Hernandez, Rafael and Evans replaced with Depay, DiMaria, Falcao, Darmian and Rojo. For the cost of probably £180-200m, terrible squad building.

Valencia - Smalling - Maguire - Shaw
Herrera - Fellaini

Yes I selected Fellaini over Pogba, Carrick and Matic, laugh all you want. He was a very effective player under Van Gaal and made the difference in a lot of matches, especially in 14/15.

Herrera had a great season in 16-17 as well. Won United's POTY this year.

LvG set us back more than Moyes. So poor signings. Our worst manager for 40 years.

Undoubtedly. Moyes' season was a disaster, but he was only really responsible for adding Fellaini and Mata. He did cull the coaching staff, which shouldn't be overlooked, but in terms of playing staff, he didn't have much of an opportunity to do much damage.

LVG's transfers were largely underwhelming. Particularly in his second year. His outgoings weren't great either, as he got rid of players that, in hindsight, could probably have done a better job for us than the players he brought in.

I also didn't realise that we tried buying the brother of Milinkovic-Savic. I wonder if that was mistaken identity.

Swap Blind for Dalot, all that money could not have been spent worse.
