PL: Arsenal V Manchester United 01/02/05

you should reverse the badges...put ours first...don't like the way it looks with the cannon pointing right at our logo...bad luck methinks.[/QUOTE]
ok done.

If you change it around wouldn't you have to swap the names around as well. By doing that you would be insinuating that Man utd is the home team.

For crying out loud man, you have made a right hash of a simple thread.

Agreed. Why not make a reverse image of the Arsenal badge and put them in their right places?

	 Almunia

Lauren Campbell Cygan Cole

Freddie Vieira Flamini Reyes

        Bergkamp Henry

I agree totally with the Fabregas statement that JazzG said...Flamini is the right choice. Im never happy when Pires doesnt start, but when Bergkamp is out there, he makes Henry play better, and so Pires should start on the bench.

Reyes on the other hand, I would never consider him starting on the bench, he's going to want a big piece of the Neville Sisters after the way they hacked him maliciously during the Battle of the Buffet. He'll lift for this game.

As for being worried about Ruud playing....I see no reason why we would be. Mike Riley's not the ref, so there wont be any diving penalties for him, and he's usually ineffective against us....unless he has a penalty.

Should be a good game, but Arsenal will get up 3-1. Henry (x2) and Pires for the home team, and Giggs for the away.

Let's just hope this game isn't destroyed by a stupid incident like at Old Trafford!

Ah! by stupid incident you mean your lot crying like babies and throwing food around while your manager claim Ruud was a cheat despite the fact that Ruud had nothing to do with the penalty.

Reyes will run scared again, just like he did at Old Trafford and in the Spanish match.

I think it will be close and with No Toure haelping Gay Sol out we should be able to get at their seriously dodgy keeper (whichever plays)

Lets face it, any win by us will be treated with derision and we will have obviously cheated. Just like you lot claimed in the FA Cup last year and in October.

Prediction. Vincibles 0 - United 2 (Rio and Scholes)

Ruud is only good with penalties eh, I seem to remember a certain wondergoal 2 seasons ag when he ran half the pitch and put it over your keeper with ease, beating Gay Sol and Lauren in the process, to that extent, I cant find a player who isnt innefective against us.

Almunia is hilarious to watch. If you thought Timmy had problems with decision making just watch this guy for a while. Headless chicken does not come close to describing him

Hey did you Guys know JazzG is a Moderator on http://www.arsenal-mania.com/, it seems strange though, on the Arsenal site and I’ve been banned 5-6 times for telling the truth, no swearing or bad mouthing, just home truths, but Arsenal fans have the run of this place, goes to show, we are much more tolerant than southerners.

Oh BTW, the last ban was because I hacked into the Forum with a Mods Password for a few months(I had the power to block and change stuff, I never did, I only unblocked myself), they banned me for life.

Man Utd v Arsenal: Who wants it?

The fight for Middle Earth was claimed as the battle to end all battles. The powers of good vs evil in an epic adventure to destroy the most powerful object of desire Middle Earth had to offer.
So, the battle to end all battles? I beg to differ. On a cold, late Sunday afternoon in October, a battle commenced between two of the greatest footballing powers the world has to offer. At 4:05pm, the battle of Old Trafford began and the twenty-two warriors on the battle field locked horns and took part in a game remembered more for the incidents that took place during and after the game than the goals scored.

Whatever people say, players or managers, there is a real hate between Manchester United and Arsenal. Historically, Arsenal vs Manchester United was a fixture everyone wanted to see purely for footballing reasons, but ever since the arrival of Arsene Wenger to Highbury, the two clubs, with thanks to both managers with respect, spiraled the fixture into the game of the season, every season. The moment Arsenal became serious title contenders in 1997 was the moment in time that Sir Alex Ferguson realised he had a deadly serious rival to his throne. Come May 1998, Arsenal won both the Premier League and the English FA Cup.

From then on the personal rivalry between both the managers, the fans and to an extent, the players, became more and more increasingly intense. Neither wanted to give way, neither wanted to be shown up. Both sides battled away, equally sharing six Premier League titles since Arsenal's first major success under the Wenger era.

Turn to October 24th 2004, Old Trafford. Arsenal went into the game on sensational form in England. They were swatting away each and every team they were playing up against, averaging four goals a game almost. They had smashed Nottingham Forest's record of going unbeaten in the league, notching up an incredible forty-nine games.

Fifty was the magic number, Old Trafford the venue to reach that incredible feat. With Chelsea mounting a serious title challenge this season also, with the arrival of FC Porto's Champions League winning coach, Jose Mourinho and spending £28m on Didier Drogba, £21m on Ricardo Carvalho, £12m on Arjen Robben and bringing in other big names like Mateja Kezman, Petr Cech, Paulo Ferreira and Tiago, Chelsea were already a force to be reckoned with and were placing the pressure on Arsenal at the top. Manchester United were trailing both Arsenal and Chelsea by several points come October, so the scene was certainly set.

Manchester United and Arsenal never need extra encouragement before facing one another, but with the added pressure of United desperate to get closer to their rivals and Arsenal with the pressure of reaching fifty-not-out, this game had all the makings to be the biggest of them all.

After the 90 minutes were up, the result read Manchester United 2 Arsenal 0. United had done it, they set out their stall and they achieved everything they could have wished for before the game. However, the 2-0 victory did not bring out any justice to the events that took place during the game. Arsenal felt hard done by and rightfully so. Ferdinand took out Ljungberg who was running clean through on goal, only for the referee and his assistant to ignore the situation, thus frustrating Wenger and Arsenal as by the laws of the game, it was a straight red card offence. Both sides kept battling away, neither prepared to let the other get even within a sniff at goal.

The tackles came flying in from all over the pitch, in particular the Neville brothers, and in particular, on Jose Antonio Reyes. It was the tricky Spaniard who seemed to be Arsenal's strongest threat at the time, he was on sensational form coming into the game and United did their homework. They made sure that whenever Reyes got past Gary Neville, they would always have somebody else waiting to make sure he got no further by all means necessary. This effected Reyes, he became quieter as the game went on and the tackles flew in. Not surprisingly, he didn't last 90 minutes.

The next major talking point was that of a tackle which quite frankly I found back then and still find to this day, truly horrific and something no professional footballer should ever be proud of (unless you are Roy Keane and the opponent is Alf Inga Haaland). Ruud Van Nistelrooy stamped down onto the leg of Ashley Cole with real intent as the England international came flying in to try and win a loose ball. Van Nistelrooy, as proven by video footage and founded guilty by the English Football Association, had only eyes for the leg of Cole. However this incident more or less went un-noticed by the officials.

The linesman signalled for an Arsenal free kick, nothing more, nothing less. Cole was stretchered off but made his way back onto the pitch after treatment. Van Nistelrooy was later given a 3 match ban for the stamp, Arsenal manager Wenger was later fined £15,000 for calling Van Nistelrooy a cheat in a post-match interview.

This game was boiling over, it hadn't been too long since Arsenal went to Old Trafford the season before and played out a pretty dull 0-0 draw. At least that was dull until Vieira was sent off for a lunge on Van Nistelrooy and United were later given a penalty in stoppage time which Van Nistelrooy struck the bar with, causing Arsenal players to celebrate the miss by mocking Van Nistelrooy. Keown (Now of Reading), Parlour (Now of Middlesbrough), Lauren and Cole of Arsenal were all found guilty by the FA for un appropriate behaviour after the game and were given out suspensions and fines respectively. Ryan Giggs and Cristiano Ronaldo of Manchester United were both posed with similar fines. People thought the ending to that game would not be repeated again, oh how they were wrong.

After Wayne Rooney won a penalty for United in the 73rd minute after conning the referee on the day, Mike Riley. Van Nistelrooy stepped up and slotted the ball away, he ran to the corner flag and screamed like he'd just won the jackpot on the National Lottery. 17 minutes later, as Arsenal were trying to apply the pressure to get an equaliser by throwing more bodies up field, United gathered the ball and went onto a counter attack. Alan Smith got the ball inside the box and played it squared for Wayne Rooney to side foot home into an empty net and seal the fate of the game in United's honour.

Handshakes were rare after the game, most notably when Arsenal's Sol Campbell blatantly blanked England colleague Rooney. Campbell clearly did not have the respect at the time for Rooney after it was he who Rooney had used to jump over to gain the penalty. The players left the pitch, a few of them running back in as though something rather dramatic was taking place in the tunnel.

It wasn't until the following day that the world first read about the "Battle Of The Buffet". Reports that an Arsenal player had thrown soup and a slice of pizza at United manager Alex Ferguson outside the Arsenal changing room and arguments between players had taken place. Later on suggestions had been made that Ferguson had entered the away changing room and taken it upon himself to openly mock Wenger and his players out of anger for the food incident. It is then said that Ferguson went for Wenger but was restrained by a player. Ferguson however says it was Wenger who went for him after the match. Running towards him with his fists raised in the air, yelling at the Scot to make something of the situation. Wenger the brute? I think even Ferguson had a chuckle to himself after he said that. There were also reports of a scuffle between coaching staff and Arsenal kit man Vic Akers suffered a broken nose as he tried to break things up.

Of course the FA did a splendid job in clearing everything up as they always do, and more recently took it upon themselves to try and put a ban on Wenger and Ferguson speaking out of term about one another through the media after both managers became engaged in a war of words once more in the long build up to Tuesday nights game. Lets be honest though for a second. If Ferguson or Wenger have something to say, they will say it, whether the FA like it or not, they are their own men and live in country with the freedom of speech.

So Tuesday February 1st 2005 is the night these two sides meet up again since the battle of the buffet. Sure, they were drawn against one another in the League Cup back on 1st December, but the sides put out to play on that evening were hardly the same group of players who took to the field earlier in the season.

Recent form favours Manchester United, they have been the big winners since that game at Old Trafford, going on a couple good runs of form and lately have been keeping clean sheets, something which can't be said for Arsenal. There form has stumbled, they've lost to Liverpool and Bolton in the league and have looked anything but convincing in the games they have won. Fortunately though for the Gunners, they have started to get back to how they know to play best. The win against Newcastle United was proof enough that Arsenal were getting back into the swing of things, a 2-0 victory over Wolves in the FA Cup on Saturday was further evidence that Arsenal are close to hitting the form that was making headlines at the start of the season.

United on the other hand have looked strong over the last couple of months. They had a recent defeat to Chelsea in the League Cup semi-final, but they instantly hit back a few days later as they too went on to win in the FA Cup 4th round with a comfortable 3-0 win at home to Middlesbrough.

Kolo Toure is suspended for Arsenal after being caught on camera elbowing Alan Shearer of Newcastle United last week. An injury to Phillipe Senderos means that Pascal Cygan is guaranteed to play his second game in a row for Arsenal since returning from injury to fill the void left by Toure. With Edu's future still to be clarified and Gilberto seemingly out for the season, Arsenal are not as strong as they would like to be going into this game. Manchester United have an injury to Van Nistelrooy who isn't due back for a couple more weeks at least and Smith still not fully fit
