Solano - We can end Old Trafford jinx

Nolberto Solano believes Villa’s pathetic record at Old Trafford is there to be ripped up.

Villa’s seven-goal top scorer insists they can pull off mission impossible with a rare league win on a ground where they have tasted just two league wins in almost 75 years and 51 attempts.

Pongo Waring scored all four in a 4-3 win in August 1930, Johnny Dixon scored the only goal in December 1954 and Peter Withe scored both in a 2-1 win in November 1983 – their last triumph.

The Peruvian said: “On paper we are not favourites but it’s about performing on the pitch and hopefully we can have a good result for our fans and our club because we want to finish like we did last season.

“I didn’t have a good record there at Newcastle either. We beat them just the once but history is in another time.”

He knows Villa are often criticised for raising their game against the bigger clubs and not performing against the lesser lights.

“We do seem to raise our game but we need to win one of these games”, he said. “It doesn’t count if you play well and lose.”

Solano admits that a fourth clean sheet in 13 games is vital, adding: “We have got clean sheets in the bag against Tottenham, Blackburn and Norwich. If we don’t get clean sheets we don’t win games. That’s why we all need to work and push hard. That’s when we get our best performances.”

Solano says Villa were unlucky to lose to Ryan Giggs’s goal in December.

He said: “The ball took a deflection and he was a little lucky to score but you don’t need to give them chances.

“But hopefully we can concentrate and not give away chances.

“The manager has said we’ve got more points now than at the same stage last season. We are quite comfortable.

“But that doesn’t matter. We now need to start pushing forward and winning games – two, or three in a row.

“That’s what gets you up. And it is very tight from fifth position down to the bottom.

“This season we didn’t start as badly as last but recently we have lost too many points and it would be nice to start up again. “We are only involved in one competition now and we are looking forward to finishing like we did last season.

“I know it will be very tough because too many teams are above us but in football you never know. You have to play first and we’ll see what happens.”

Luke Moore limped out of Villa Reserves’ 3-1 win over Wolves last night but O’Leary said the striker had an excellent game and will be fine.

Don't think the goal by Giggs was deflected. :wenger:

Sorry SB, but I believe it was, albeit a slight one. However the first line in the article about ripping up their bad record at OT is a bit far fetched. We have kept nine clean sheets in a row, players are coming back from injury and we're at home. Can't see anything but their bad record continuing.

Any news on Rio for the match?

He is back. ;)

Rio returns

Rio Ferdinand will return to Manchester United's starting line-up against Aston Villa on Saturday after recovering from a hamstring injury.

The England defender missed the last three games after picking up a knock against Tottenham but will be part of a full-strength United defence looking to add to a club record eight consecutive clean sheets.

Gary Neville could replace brother Phil at right-back but Alan Smith (ankle) definitely misses out.

United (from): Carroll, Howard, G Neville, P Neville, Ferdinand, Silvestre, Brown, O'Shea, Heinze, Fortune, Ronaldo, Keane, Scholes, Giggs, Miller, Djemba-Djemba, Saha, Rooney.

We should watchout for their free kicks they had some crackers

O'Leary calls for guts

By ROSS GREGORY

DAVID O'LEARY has urged his Aston Villa players to stand up and be counted when they visit Manchester United today.

Awestruck Villa were lucky to escape with just a 4-0 mauling in the corresponding fixture last season.

And boss O’Leary said: “I love playing at Old Trafford. I love pitting my wits against Alex Ferguson. I love the whole occasion of a big game with 67,000 fans watching.

“I just hope we’re big enough to go out there and play — and not go with a defeatist attitude like we did last year.

“We went to Manchester United last season and lost 4-0 and I’ve never seen lads lacking so much in confidence and be so much in awe of going to a big place. Perhaps it was poor management on my part, not picking up on that.

“That is where we’ve improved when we go to places like that now.

“We might not win the games but teams have to beat us — they’ve really got to earn the right to win and we’ve instilled that in the players.

“If we’re going to get beaten, I want people to at least be able to say that we gave it a full go.”

i would like to see a lot of goals, lets say a 5-0! saha should start to score. hopefully other teams like arsenal or chelsea will lose

Villa were so crap last year that Kleberson actually looked class against them.....

Team:
Carroll
G.Neville, Ferdinand, Silvestre, Heinze
Fletcher, Keane, Scholes, Ronaldo
Rooney, Saha

Good line-up with Giggs on the bench if needed....

It's Howard, Brown, O'Shea, Fortune and Giggs on the bench. 4-2-3-1 according to the radio, with Fletcher and Keane in the holding positions.

good line up, should do the job. good to see fletcher grow into that midfield position. scholes running around, making the good passes, ronnie and rooney attacking and saha finishing, while keane and fletch win the balls back and spray it around the field. anyone got live video streams?
