Gaming PlayStation 4 (Console)

http://metro.co.uk/2013/01/28/playstation-4-tech-specs-revealed-in-latest-leak-3370502/

The above article backs up Weastes comments from a few weeks back that the PS4 will have 3.5GB of RAM for gaming.

It also states that an additional 4GB will be set aside for unified system memory (is that for the OS?).

Actually no, that's still old news. Dev kits always have more memory.

Weaste's figures were right at the time we heard them, though Sony were still undecided on final amounts and I've heard nothing to the contrary lately.

I've no idea what you just said.

Can you explain these things in layman terms? I've no idea what goes into making consoles, I just want to know how they'll perform.

an x86 or x64 core is a CPU unit that runs on a computer, you know, ones that run Windows 7. Intel is a nice word, bits of shit basically. Why on earth would you want 8 bits of shit?

Just like how 1 woman can make a baby every 9 months and 10 women can have 10 babies every 9 months but 10 women cant make 1 baby in 1 month...

Having dual or quad CPU's is useful if the process tree allows it, or if you are multitasking. Having 8 CPU's would be bloody useless for gaming, although if you found a way to integrate all 8 into some kind of super CPU you could become a very rich man.

Mobile CPU's are usually pretty energy efficient and pretty good for their size and don't need a massive fan pouring cold air onto them. But pretty shit for gaming.

Right Weaste?

Amd processors are the cheap and energy efficient processors anyway, which is why consoles tend to use them. Cooling is a huge problem for this generation of consoles even more than the last, so you can see why they've gone Amd/Ati.

But yep, 8 cores at 1.6 would be ridiculous and completely pointless.

It's not looking too bad a machine, but I'm still a bit underwhelmed. If the 720 is indeed less powerful, then it's probably the most lacklustre hardware generation yet.

Ah, ok mate :D

Some nutpots in the cloud actually believe that it's possible to emulate the Cell BE with a GPU based on flops. It aint! What makes the SPEs in Cell special is that each has its own 256K of local RAM, can process 128 bits at once, and the fecker goes at 3.2Ghz. Each SPE is basically its own confined (and general purpose) CPU that just happens to also be quite good with SIMD operations, then also linked with another X SPEs on a 300GB/s bus. Hundreds of shitty little GPU type boxes can't do the same thing. SPE BTW is basically designed by Toshiba, not by Sony or IBM (IBM didn't even want them - it ws quite happy with VMX).

So they are going to announce the PS4 and all its details on the 20th? Or are we only likely to learn vague details at this point still?

It will probably be another nine months before anything is official.

I was an Xbox guy this gen, mainly because of Xbox live. I'm really on the fence about next gen. Have to wait and see what both companies come up with. I'm sure Sony and Microsoft are both dying to know my decision.

So this thread has been bumped constantly for the past two weeks, I check it and it's only just been announced that there will be an announcement? What have you all been waffling about til now?

When an announcement will be?

Actually it's more like a care home for Weaste. We have to keep him occupied in here, otherwise he'll be even worse out in the rest of the forum.

Next Gen has took too long to come. I'm ready to splash some cash on one of these babies.

So Weaste, since you are only interesting in hardware (specifically Sony), isn't it a little depressing to you that this is pretty much not only a very PC-like system, but also has a Liverpool chip?

;)

From that Edge (bleugh) article:

Importantly, we’ve learned that Sony has told developers that it is pushing for the final PS4 RAM to match up to Microsoft’s 8GB.

Both platforms are driven by eight-core AMD CPUs clocked at 1.6GHz, with Microsoft opting for a D3D11.x GPU from an unknown source and Sony utilising a more capable solution in AMD’s ‘R10XX’ architecture, alongside the so-called ‘Liverpool’ system-on-chip.

It’s clear Sony has designed a system that, on paper, outperforms Microsoft’s next Xbox. One source familiar with both platforms tells us that in real terms Sony’s console is “slightly more powerful” and “very simple to work with”.

Well, even though my posts on here pre-date this article, I can assure you I'm not leaking them any info. They are obviously reading my posts!

So Sony are going for 8GB GDDR5 ram? whilst Xbox going fro 8GB DDR3 ?

Wouldn't that make the PS4 far more powerful machine than the next box? I guess it will also make it far more expensive.

It's not going to be far more powerful no, but what power advantage it does have will beable to be made use of this time.

However, if the memory is lower than the 720 (by any reasonable amount) it could once again affect engines and cross-platform games, although this time around since Sony have finally realised to stop fecking around with the hardware I'd expect the PS4 to actually be lead machine from the off here.

So all in all, I think we'll see a reverse of the last generation, where the games will look nearly identical (though the 720 may have better lighting) but run slightly better on the Sony machine.

Hang on a minute the new Playstation has a Liverpool chip?! WTF is that? That would make me want to stay with Xbox!

Yeah, if I didn't have a thing for Sony myself, I'd seriously consider not getting one since that is what's responsible for all the images on screen!

When you play Uncharted 4, all you'll see is LIVERPOOL!!!! All over the screen

Serious point, what actually is it? The tech side goes way over my head.
