Gaming PlayStation 4 (Console)

The problem with the PS4 is the games list, people can bang on about 3rd party games all they want, but as Nintendo proves time and again it's even more about strong 1st party to contain market share.

Has Nintendo really proved that? They lost a lot of market share with the N64 and slipped further behind with the GameCube (they stopped production for a whilst due to low sales). Sure the Wii reversed that slide, but that was not due to the game, more of the concept... e.g. my parents own a Wii just for Wiifit and WiiSports. Now look at the WiiU, they have already slashed sales forecast and already talk of a price drop in NA and Europe.

Wii-U sales have been poor because their gamble on the controller hasn't been successful in getting the attention of the masses.
In its current state it wows no one.

Sony have a bigger 1st party than anyone, it's just that outside of GT none of their IPs sell gangbusters.
In the end it comes down to those games having to be good enough to draw people to the console because of it. Sony lost out on that side

But look at the basic picture. They are still around and going strong.

Do you think they can compete with the companies with a broader base who can afford to lose money on hardware?

The Gamecube proved it wasn't worth it surely, that machine was brilliant but sold not too well, so the Wii was a master-stroke. As for the Wii-U, just remember the 3DS.

Bigger does not mean better, or even interesting. Are any of their IPs the best of their genre? Apart from GT5 (which is up there, but not the best), everything else is take it or leave it stuff.

Yeah i remember the 3DS, they under up under pricing them so much, coupled with Wii sales dropping dramatically, they ended up taking there first annual loss for a whilst. nearly $500 million i believe. Come March 31st they will announce a second annual loss.

They already sell the Wii U at a loss, can they under price it anymore? Will the price cut really help shift consoles, when the PS4 and Nextbox are 8 months away.

I like Nintendo, but they have alienated 3rd party developers, alienated hardcore gamers and now with the Wii U they have alienated the casual gamers as well.

At least they try new shit! Technically they are the best of the best, they just need some decent game designers.

Indeed!

They never alienated developers, professional developers traditionally love working with them. That's a myth.

Hardcore gamers should also own Nintendo, unless you mean the way the term is jokingly used for Cod gamers and the like nowadays

Remains to be seen on casual gamers. I don't know many to even start to judge.

The difference between developing for the 3ds and Wii-U is financially tremendous. Also, the Wii-U is up against more direct competitors.

1. Are third party publishers willing to take on that financial risk? Right now we are seeing them adopting a wait-and-see attitude.

2. From a gamers perspective, we will only buy the Wii-U for its exclusive games, otherwise why settle for a gimped port for 3rd party games? I just don't see their first party games as significant a pull factor in the home console space when you also have the benefits of 3rd party and exclusive games on MS and Sony's platform.

3. Tablet controller isn't pulling in the casuals or resulting in impulse purchases of the Wii-U.

4. Lower budget developers can develop games for a much larger install base via PC, PSN and Xbox Live.

Barring a feck up by the other 2, the Wii-U will finish last in terms of consoles sold. I just don't know how badly it will fare.

Excited for tomorrow it's not everyday a new console gets revealed. Let's hope Sony have some decent idea's for the PS4. Would be nice to see some games running on the machine or at least confirm some new titles.

So why the lack of 3rd party support?

Well yeah your right on Hardcore gamers, ok more general, mass market gamers probably won't.

And casual gamers, well my parents own a Wii, they have no plans on getting a Wii U, i know numerous other people who brought the Wii due to the concept and put it away after a few months or used it for Wii Fit or Wii Zoomba. You won't have those people buying a Wii U, which is why the Wii outsold the Wii U over Christmas.

We've been through all this before! If you are that interested, read the Wii/Wii-U threads or ask me there mate.

As for the developers question, the Wii had a lot of 3rd party support. Don't confuse developers with publishers.

Can anyone tell me how cloud gaming services intend to solve latency issues? Will switching to a fibre connection help in any way?

Any bets on how many times we will see weaste post the dancing gif today? Weaste you should make a gif of you doing the dance.

So how long until we get bombarded with PS4 stuff from you weaste? or can we expect some piece during the broadcast as you become to focused on watching that you can't post at the same time.

Well, Lambs and I know what is being shown, so I'm just going to post "I told you so" lines.

Gaikai, the cloud gaming service that Sony own, registered various domains around the name "Playstation World" on Friday.

Make of that what you will.

Question for Weaste are they going to run BC through hardware and cloud streaming?

Does this mean that PS4 games are in development now? I'm surprised nothing has been leaked if they're all working on it.
