Portuguese Football 2017/2018

Porto are stronger in the game, but Sporting are also dangerous. A bit more cynical and they would be already ahead.

Coentrão seems a bit finished, but Bruno Fernandes is class.

How come they let so many Porto players alone in front of goal?:wenger:

always thought Herrera is good enough for PL team.

and how fecking shit is Marega?

Curious that Jesus goes the youngster Leão instead of Montero.

Marega is running riot, spreading chaos in Sporting's defense, but that must be what being shit means, I guess.

Wow! Seems Jesus knows what he's doing.

Dost and Gelson out, Doumbia gets injured and Rafael Leão scores his first goal in the league. I don't understand football.

1-1 is not a bad result, better than 0-0 since it gives us an advantage in head to head. After the 1-0 I thought we were going to lose the plot as usual, but we've done well.

This is me right now:

And that was a penalty on Doumbia btw, the ref and VAR shat their pants because the crowd put pressure on them. The problem with VAR is that in situations like that they're always going to side with the ref. If the ref called it a penalty they'd have kept his decision too

Why don't you want to lose, more than you want to win? I don't get it, what's the use, Sporting's still 5 points from Porto. A win is a must.

Regarding the supposed penalty, take off your tinted glasses. Doumbia falls on his own, not because of the defender's foot.

First half Porto more dominant Sporting with a late equalizer of Rafael Lion. With such a name he has everything to be a succes at Sporting. Both teams could have scored more then once.

We play Benfica at home and they play Benfica away and a draw would give us an advantage in head to head. A draw would still leave us in the middle of a title race but a loss kills us.

Doumbia got hit and then fell, it's a penalty. He exagerates contact but it's still a penalty.

Seems he's another academy player.

Disgraceful defending. We don't deserve to win the title after doing shit like that

Fight with the stewards and players, god I love Spanish/Portuguese/Latin games

Battaglia with the awful pass, Battaglia saving on the line.

Marega's injury is a big loss for Porto, not so much for this game but for the ones coming next.

Sporting come on ffs, should be winning with those 2 missed chances.

Oh, my God! This youngster now lost his cool, he could be in history!

Experienced strikers sacrifice the style of the shot for the assurance of the direction, the kid went for style.

Without our 2 best players, away against the first placed team, we're the best team on the pitch, miss easy chances, have a penalty wrongly denied and lose by 1 goal. Classic. How many times in the past 15 years have we lost big title matches in games exactly like this one?

Porto will only win the league because everyone else is crap, they have been terrible. It would have been a lot easier to take this if we were actually losing the title against a good team but it's the same shit as usual, with defending like that and with this inability to finish big chances we're not going anywhere. Time for Jesus to go, we're not going to do anything in the Europa League and at this point I don't even think we'll be second.

Porto takes another huge step to the title, game could have gone either way. Too pity we had our chances but we didn't take him. I have said it before Sporting has always to play with 2 CF thats more difficult to defend. Conceicao gambled and at the end he was lucky.

Too many mistakes and poor finishing but its difficult to ask more with our 2 fullbacks, 2 strikers and Danilo missing. One step closer to the title!

Important win for Porto while missing their two best players and their in form striker. Sporting also missed Dost and Gelson, and particularly Dost could have made a difference with the quantity of corners and free kicks sporting had.

Good game in the 1st half. Many mistakes in the 2nd but emotion until the end. Sporting should have scored in the end.
Both teams are physically debilitated, everything is still possible regarding the title, but Porto took a huge step towards it.

The Portuguese commentator just said “Casillas had no chance”!

To be fair it was a very fast and strong shot. Forwards rarely try to score through there due to the risk of hitting the keeper legs, but since the keeper can't keep his legs closed before the shot, I don't think being between the legs makes it worse than if it had been through his side. Wouldn't say "had no chance" but it definitely wasn't an easy save to make either.

It's still really weird for me to see Casillas at Porto

To me too

Epic save at the end too. It's the second time he does this to us :(

Congrats on the 3 points and please don't gift the title to Benfica now.

Leão's miss is another one for the gallery of "almost" from Sporting football history. It's a question of mentality and Sporting players (regardless of the issues with the referees and endemic corruption in Portugal) don't have it. It's difficult to change the mindset after decades of failure. I just hope the good job BdC is doing with the club finances and organization can translate to football.

It won't happen with Jesus though. If we don't win the EL (and i give us a minimum chance) it's time for him to go. I just can't stand him anymore and directly blame him for the january transfer market debacle and specially for the terrible management of the squad. His lineup and Bas Dost injury against Astana is unforgivable. Getting rid of Iuri and loaning Matheus Pereira when we have virtually 0 creativity without Gelson is mind blowing. I want a manager like Leonardo Jardim who gives chances to youngesters rather than this senile fool and his stupid fetiches with Bruno César and Bryan Ruiz. I want JJ out. He can't blame lack of investment this time. The blame for another season without the title is on him.

Tbf it can happen to more experienced players.

Yes and no.

Yes because clubs who don't win in a sistematic way do feel more the pressure, not only the players , but even the fans.

No, because this has nothing to do with mentality, since January when we went to Benfica we have been playing poor football, we lost at Estoril, and now even Braga has more goals scored than us, we lost the league in Estoril not yesterday, we don't deserve to win, even with all the corruption around we have nothing to complain this season.

True.

Just changing JJ and replacing him with another manager or returning to the times where someone chooses the players and then the managers don't like them is no solution.

We need to build a modern football structure, where everyone knows his place, where you don't have stupid decisions like bringing Wendell or Misic to Portugal without any opinion from the manager, where we have the stupid situation where they don't play because he simply didn't have a word about that.

This and the fact we can't have a Academy where you have a B team where everyone wants to end the team and going to under 23's teams just because they are cheaper, where you see players there who don't have the minimal chance to be part of the senior team.

All in all, we need a director of football who can link the international scouting, the purpose of the football academy, and yes or no do we want our youth teams to have a similar brand of football as the professionals, or are we going to still buy 10 to 15 players all the seasons and expect 1 or 2 good players from the Academy to be developed.

My opinion, if we can't sign Fonseca or Jardim, simply there is not anyone in current portuguese football with the profile to develop at the same time younger players, be them from the Academy or International Scouting.

So the other solution would have to be someone from the new trend of German football, I have some opinions about that, but knowing Portugal if we signed a young guy from Germany who didn't won nothing relevant in professional football he would be murdered by the football media who hates BDC.

Sacking JJ and keeping the same policies simply will not work, we need to restructure the mentality and the profile of players we scout and sign on the international market, integrated with academy players where we need to ask more from the people who work there.

Sick and tired of mediocrity and excuses, corruption doesn't explain everything, we need people who think football.

It's just a miss. He went for it (no controling and tried) and this time he missed. I like strikers that finish on the first touch, I think that is a very good quality for a striker. Sometimes they go in and sometimes they don't. A draw would be a better result because of an extra point but in the title challenge it wouldn't help that much. To compete for the title we needed a win.

I agree that the time of JJ has past. I hope our president sees that but getting a new manager will cost and knowing that CL football is probably not for next season that is a financial settback.

But that is the beaty of football, you can compete with teams who have a bigger budget if you work better in other aspects.

I would go for a coach without past at benfica or porto so that media can't put pressure from that side. It has to be someone who is flexible in the way he plays, and that believes in team mechanismism and not like now where it is ball to Bruno or Gelson and then hope of some magic from one of these 2. And 2 important points, attacking coach (2 CF in 90% of the games in Portugal) and has to look at quality and not at age. Leonardo Jardim would be perfect but why would he leave Monaco for us.

Sporting director to have at the club is a good thing if the coach can work under that system. There needs to be a good contact between coach and sporting director. You can off course choose for a coach who accepts to work under a sporting director.

So if I understand well Wendell and Misic aren't choices from JJ who decided then to get them?

Youth level is good but I think they should work more on tactics and vision. If they can improve that at the academy and keep the rest the academy would get a big upgrade.
