PL L FA Premier League

Arsenal 2:0 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

Sun, 10 March 2019

Bad day at the office, but a bit of perspective when you consider it's the first PL loss since OGS took over. Could have been different had a couple of the early chances been taken - Lukaku and Fred, on another day they both went in.
Penalty was soft but Fred gave Lacazette a little shove and he took the chance to go over.
Sky bit over the top with the criticism of DDG for the first goal - how many goals is he generally to blame for as a rule ? Very few. No player is exempt from criticism but when you consider how many times he has saved United in the post-Fergie years his mistakes are minimal by comparison, to say the least.
I think Arsenal probably deserved the win overall. United didn't play badly but failed to capitalise on any chances they had.

Ole said after the match that he was not sure who he would have for Wolves, but that he should have a full squad after the international break.

A full squad will help us a lot. I feel we got a very good midfield with Fred starting to perform too. Although I worry a bit about Rashford and Martial. They didn't look good today and we need them on fire to help Lukaku score the goals.

We do all this hard work for months to then be undone by a spawny keeping error fluker and a total dive being given. Couldn't make it up really.

Strange game this, we created enough chances to win it, yet we were really poor.
We did a PSG on ourselves.
It's a game Ole got some things wrong, the 442 with Pogba playing wide was a bit audacious, underated Arsenal there. Secondly Ole was not proactive enough with making substitutions early. Its something he needs to learn to do.
Matic lasted too long in the match. Scot should have been brought in for him and Martial should have been on from the start of the second half.
Rom even though missed chances played well. Fred is getting criticised by some when IMO, was probably our best player today.
We were poor but Arsenal were worse, we, with the help of the ref gave it to them.
Still think we will make top 4 though, in fact we might even nick 3rd spot.

We were due loss, I have a feeling we might go on another winning run.

P.S Ole has really got to get the job, he will be better for this, he is constantly learning more about his players( like where not to play pogba). With the games from now until the end of the season, some additions to the squad and a pretty season, we could give a real go next season.

I think we played well overall, but could not take our chances. After the soft penalty we could not really push them though which was a bit annoying to see. The subs didn't really help.
I am glad to see Pogba back in good form. I didn't like him since the Chelsea game, but today he showed his class. We need him for the end of the season. Maybe he just needed some rest.
I also liked Fred today even if he made a stupid thing to give away the penalty (too soft in my view though).

Matic and Martial didn't look fully up for it but glad to have them back.
WTF? Pogba was pretty poor. If this is good form we're fecked

Didn't take our chances, they had a gift off DDG, rare error, and a non existent pen, that was never in a month of Sunday's. You can now understand why there are no English refs in top comps. That guy moss is the worst prem ref in it's tenure. And there's been a few. We didn't do enough really to get a result after that gift off moss.

Weirdly enough the Sky Sports and BBC post match reports talk about the penalty as if it was a clear foul and not even debatable in the slightest

Two guys running together in the area, one decides to lift his legs up behind him at the knees, the other doesn't:nono:

I though we played pretty well actually. With some better finishing we would have won pretty easily.
Shame it happened in this match as a win would put us in a great position.

We already proven under Ole that we can bounce back from a loss, so lets do it again.

On another note, i dont read the match day thread that much but did today, and oh my god we got some horrible fans in here that turn on every player who makes the smallest mistake.

I thought it was particularly awful today. I've gone from being an occasional moaner to standing back and thinking what the feck. I could sort of understand the disgruntled mentality pretty much all through the Moyes days, the 2nd year or LvG's snoozefest and during the end of the Jose times. But, given how weve played and performed recently that was just objectionable.

Disappointing result, yes, but I doubt you would find a supporter who, after the Liverpool loss, if told United is going to fire Jose, begin to play the United way of football, and have a record of 14 wins, 2 draws, 2 losses, one of which will be to PSG in the CL, which they will overturn in Paris to go through to the next round, and the other will be to Arsenal on 10 March, after a 9 game PL away run, be sitting 5th and 3 points off 3rd, and will still be in the FA Cup, wouldn't have said, "I'll take that."

Go on then, I'll give you that ;)

For those blaming DeGea and describing it as a howler. Is he god? That ball swerved and nobody would have caught it.

Lukaku, I was generous with my review. He deserves a 2. The tap in in first half has to go in. We score there and a different game. Fred was not bad but he did try some Hollywood passes that ended up terribly. Pogba was anonymous.

The bounces just didn’t go our way and Arsenal had an excellent defensive game. Typical to come out flat after a emotionally draining game in Paris. Credit for Arsenal stepping up when their back to the wall.

Result was due to keeper mistake, us not taking our chances and Arsenal taking theres, was an even game and Arsenal have done well at home in most of their big games. Thought Lukaku had the opposite of his normal game, his touch, workrate and movement was really good, his finishing was poor, if he finished SHaws cross early on, we would have won. Rashford has looked tired last few weeks, he was poor against PSG, forgotten due to the penalty. My only main reaction, Smalling is still our best defender since Rio/Vidic retired and that really needs to be addressed this summer. Good to see Greenwood getting time though

I'm annoyed with the result because I believe we are much better than this Arsenal team and feel they were there for the taking. That being said, we made mistakes from back to front and got what we deserved.

Part of me wonders whether our form contributed to the lack of urgency and sharpness out there today. Perhaps they felt there was no way we wouldn't eventually get back into the game, and it just never happened.

Thought we were way too cautious in the first half, especially in midfield. It's like Matic and Fred didn't even know each other and Pogba was invisible. Funnily enough even during that terrible first half we still could've been 2-1 at the break.

Overall I thought Arsenal were extremely lucky not to lose that game by a margin. But who are we to complain about luck after the PSG game, eh?

The media will be too busy writing about our loss to even give credit to our team. Arsenal aren't world beaters but we went toe-to-toe with them and on another day we win that game 3-0.

Tough loss.

Thought we had great chances and if it weren't for a very soft pen, I would have backed us to equalized.

Could have played better, but we created glorious chances and just didn't convert.

A De Gea howler unfortunately the difference.

Disappointing, but not too much of a surprise after midweek.

I had the strange experience of watching it from the home end, but literally about 2seats from the away fans!
I was in row 2, so if there's a pan to the Arsenal fans celebrating wildly, look out for the guy not even pretending to be pleased.

Hit the bar, hit the post, Lukaku had a chance so close to goal it was unreal, and we still lost.
That freak opening goal! Didn't they score one like that a few years ago that flew in weirdly? Was it the 3-0 game, or was it another?

Either way, after that you knew it wasn't going to be our day.

We might well need to win the euro cup to get back in it now. Unless Tottenham really implode.

Yeah agree with that, don't rate this Arsenal team at all and they still can't defend to save their lives. They haven't a notion of getting top 4 even though they have no top 6 teams to play. I'd fancy Leicester, Wolves and even Palace at the Emirates to get a result

Bad day in the office, we'll move on and I'm still happy with the approach Ole had to the game today despite what some people here would say

Most people were happy with the team before the game. It was an off day, yet we still created enough to win. Ole said he was happy with the performance, just not the result. It happens. We have done that to other teams.

We had the better chances overall. The game was even and could go either way. De Gea and the ref let us down and Leno had a brilliant game.

I think a draw would probably have been a fair result.
Better chances overall? Really? Not sure which game you were watching mate. First half I agree Man Utd (and Lukaku) should have buried a fair few, but so should Arsenal. Overall Arsenal were clearly the better side tbf, they definitely controlled the game.

Rashford, pogba and lukaku were poor. They just looked a step out of rythym with everything. Result? No goals. No goals? Silly opponent goals make us lose game.

No fuss. Nothing to be said about anything here. On to the next one.

He's trolling, mate. Don't waste your time. Saying Arsenal got the better chances now . Didn't have a big one basically. He's a good troll, actually.

They had the better 1st half,we had the better 2nd.

Not sure which game you were watching

Arsenal had the better first half? I feel like I watched a completely different game. After the goal,we completely dominated them creating chance after chance. Just pure bad luck and a freak goal changed the game.

Bad loss vs a bad Arsenal team. We were shocking infront of goal.

Hope this will kick the lads in the behind for our game vs Wolves in the Cup.

Hmm, I completely disagree with this post. First off, the penalty was not a penalty. Second, we had plenty of chances, just did not take them. Sure we weren't perfect but it wasn't as bad as you make out. Your expectations were too high in hindsight. Another day we would have gotten a result for sure.
It was a terrible start. We were second to every ball and sloppy in our own play. Yeah we had chances, but it's not like we played some amazing stuff to get those. I acknowledged that we did improve and I felt we were on the verge of a breakthrough when that penalty happened. The penalty was stupid. You can't make a challenge from that side, you're not going to win the ball. Some people may think the penalty is harsh, but I disagree. You have to expect that will happen when making a challenge from where he did. It was naive at best.

Did he even make a challenge? Or did he just run alongside someone who then threw themselves to the ground?

What challenge are you talking about? There was barely an contact. Lacazette just decided to go down.

Did Arsenal create a single chance btw? Apart from Lindelof error?
Not really. Maybe the Ramsey shot in the first half that went wide but the pass to him was behind him. United lost because they didn't score, simple as that.

Lukaku is not good enough, don't care about what ye think

He was slowly starting to get me back on board again and then he has that massive stinker on that beautiful cross by Shaw. Credit to him for what he did in the recent games but he costed us today. 0-1 up there and it would have been a total different game.

Can't believe we came away from that game with nothiing. Thought we put in a really good performance all round and could well have got 3 pts out of it. Not blaming DDG for the goal. It was insane how that ball swerved. We were playing at the Emirates and we had a swagger about us and it was good to watch. So no complaints. I want Ole as our manager more than ever. We lost when we should have won but that's football.

If this Arsenal side finish above us, Spurs and Chelsea something isn't right
How so? Arsenal made things really difficult for the 10th place team in the French league just a few days ago. Rennes only managed to score 3 goals against Arsenal's stalwart defence. This is obviously a quality team.

Terrible terrible performance. Quite clearly the worst of Ole's reign. Just as it looked we might get back in the game we give away a stupid penalty, added to the clear mistake for the first goal and it's a frustrating day. Out of the top 4, and of Chelsea win their game in hand we could be down to 6th. We couldn't string passes together, and it looked like the ball just bounced off our players and back to Arsenal's.
How is the performance terrible?

Apart from the first 20 minutes we outplayed them, outchanced them but just couldn't put the ball in the net. Least said about Moss and the penalty the better.

I don't understand all the negativity, we were clearly the better team but it just wasn't meant to be.

Jose Mourinho was right , our squad is only good enough to compete for top 4 , not good enough for title challenger.

He didn't bring Rashford off sooner. He didn't do anything to help control the ball in midfield (change Pogba's positon? Ask Fred to drop deeper? Instruct the team to keep the ball for awhile instead of losing it so frequently with risky passes and high press?) He didn't change our formation or tactics to help deal with the compressed central space in the Arsenal half or to exploit the space behind their wing backs. He made the wrong sub bringing off Dalot, and the wrong sub bringing on Greenwood.

Players may let the manager down, sure. But he has to react to a game clearly not going our way. If we had taken our early chances the game would have been different, but we didn't and they dried up in the second half. And Ole didn't react well enough, where he should have been proactive.
Why would he make the changes earlier? We were outplaying Arsenal until the Moss show.

Top four is a risk now. Good news is Chelsea dropped two points. We need Arsenal and Chelsea to screw up.
