Wow.
Talk about hating our own team. If Newcastle had scored 2 score would have been 2-2 at HT.
Unless of course you want to add "If Newcastle had awesome defenders" condition as well

I was towing the line, If i say anything positive then i'll be lynched for being a heretic. Someone actually said that we were not the better team because Newcastle could have scored more goals if they were better in front of goal so I was making fun.

Just back home from the game yesterday. Really poor performance, the win is all that matters though. The fans were a joke yesterday, singing section tried and Stretford end was just ok. That Alex Ferguson stand is a disgrace overall, more atmosphere in a library. I thought Lindelof was really good, Young was constantly looking for the ball. It was flat but it's just about getting the points at the moment.

Watching MOTD and seeing Newcastle's performance vs Watford really put into perspective our win against them. We really have no clue against any team that has a modicum of self believe and set up solidly enough. The amount of times Watford attacked the open flank and how easily they got done made our win another false dawn in a never ending series of false dawns stretching all the way back to Van Gaal era.

I know I should have just let it go and accepted the 3 points but having the weekend to stew has made me bitter again. feck me, when will this nightmare end. Please Jose, put in one good performance against a big side(not Arsenal) for us to cheer about ffs.

Way too simplistic to look at it like this

If this was the case we would all just not play the games after week 2 of the season

So we draw 0-0 at Liverpool and it was a shite performance and everyone having a go at Jose? Chelsea drew at Liverpool 1-1 after going a goal behind and it is a brilliant recovery?

True but the only difference was Chelsea were defensive but at the same time tried to make a game of it and go for a win. We just sat back for the draw with no intention of making a game out of it or going for a win.

Reminded me of us under Van Gaal...didn't seem to have a clue what we were doing most of the game, then scored a flukey goal, then instantly went from looking clueless about how to try and get a lead, to looking clueless about how to try and defend one.

Basically we managed to win by doing absolutely feck all. We didn't press them properly, we didn't do anything to try and move their players or break them down when we had the ball...then towards the end we were just punting the ball up the pitch in a panic, as if we were Brighton defending a lead against Manchester United.

It's getting really frustrating how we constantly struggle to control games because our players just wont do what is needed to make sure they aren't second to every single loose pass or ball. It makes every game against an organised and motivated team a massive struggle.

Poor performance, terrible conditions and a lucky goal to seal the 3 points. Nothing more to say about the match except the one time we get away with a lucky break/win so to do Arsenal and City. City's pen was given far to easily and then a lucky knee from Sterling.

We tried to win the game and created enough chances to do so. Whereas you didn't create anything, same result different performances.

  • Matic does need a rest- he has been holding up this team all season.
  • Lukaku does need a rest.....or more accurately to be dropped
  • Rashford has hardly played a full game all year and has been alternating regularly with Martial. It is inconsistency and not fatigue that has been the issue.
  • Valencia- is it likely that rest will improve his crossing?
Lakaku barely runs xD why would he need a rest?

I'm not going to say that we were bad but that performance was so ridiculously average. When I was rating players in the Match Day area, the only one I gave above 6 was De Gea. Everyone else ranged from 4 to 6.

I can't honestly think of one player who had a really good game. I guess Lindelof and Young can be singled out but neither of them exactly put in a stellar performance. Lindelof did look better and made a couple of key tackles but he could've been booked or worse on the one against Knockaert (it was a sliding tackle with his studs out) and he wasn't pressed all that many times. Young won us the game on a freak deflection. He was our best player going forward but he was given nothing but problems when deep in our own territory.

This game was a real eye-opener because Brighton, a smaller club with a much smaller budget than ours, simply looked a better-organized and better-trained side. They went forward quickly and with purpose, they always got back into formation promptly while we crawled forward in possession, and it always seemed like there were 2 Brighton players to 1 United player. Everyone had a clear job and there was no hesitation or dawdling that we're used to seeing from a United side. I know there's the argument that we're trying to save energy over a long season but shouldn't we have learned certain lessons when we fell behind against Newcastle last week?

As Brighton started to tire, the fact that we have better players began to show through and we might have scored even without Young's deflection but the whole thing just felt anticlimactic. I think Hughton was right in feeling hard done by, Brighton certainly deserved something from how well they played.

Where to start with the performances and tactics?

Lukaku - Did a lot of running, got a couple of chances, and did some more running. I don't really blame him because he simply has to get more service than this. What other top sides have their striker drop deep so often?

Matic - Had his worst game for us IMO. But largely because we placed him in a 2 with Pogba and conceded Brighton the midfield. Got better late in the game but has looked tired.

Mata - Dogshit. For a supposed 10, he offers zero presence and is always taking the safe pass. Our pressing also suffers when he's in the game and will always leave us a man short.

Valencia - Was absolutely dreadful in the 1st half, beaten to the ball a couple of times and made dumb fouls. Really starting to look like a player in his 30s.

Smalling - Was made to look foolish on more than one occasion. Lindelof looked better next to him, at least.

This thing with bringing Ibra on and pushing Lukaku to the wing also needs to stop. Mourinho seems to be really milking his obsession with big players - we had Ibra, Lukaku, and Fellaini all on the pitch in the late 2nd half. We already had Lukaku constantly dropping deep and we solve that problem by...bringing Ibra on and putting Lukaku wide, so that Ibra and Lukaku were both dropping deep, further congesting the midfield.

All of this was wrapped up, of course, by hearing the distinct chant of 'SEAGULLS!!!' in the waning minutes at Old Trafford.

5 out of 10 performance and that's being generous.

Well, I thought that Ashley Young played a blinder. ran like shit to get back and stopped a certain goal near the end.

Vlanecia played Brighton's left winger compltely out of the game so he could not get on the end of the crosses.

Pressing (this season) is not working so well against a team comfortable on the ball. Passing looks like the game this season. Pass around and let the opponents chase shadows.
