Post-match discussion

Strange match. Parts we looked great and in total control and others we seemed to lack intensity and quite a few individual errors. Poor from the defence for the goal.

Rashford MoM, Herrera , Martial and Pogba best of the rest. Matic typified the match , some good patches and some poor getting caught in possession several times.

Young and Lingard not very good.

Jones, Matic and Herrera need upgrading. Our lack of quality in the middle of defence and midfield makes it risky to play as high and open as we're doing.
Today:
Matic - no
Herrera - profoundly no

which game you were watching?

For all the money we’ve spent we had a 19 year old Portuguese RB, with a handful of career senior appearances, at LB; 33 yr old left winger at RB, and Phil Jones, in defence. It’s pretty clear where our transfer priorities should lie.

I’m excited to get a fully fit Sanchez back, because we desperately need him as a rotation option. I can’t see a future here for Lukaku or Mata.

Pointless tweaking with Dalot, who's naturally a RB,being played as a LB.
Didnt get that.
Here is my theory.

Dalot is a good passer but not that a good crosser. Our entire attack is from the left side. Having Dalot behind Rashford and Martial, and him link up with Matic and Pogba is a very good tactical move by Ole. Notice his pass for Rashford's goal.

Shaw pulled out before the match due to sickness, wasn't a tactical switch.
Think it is surprising that he didn't move Young to LB and have Dalot at RB where he is comfortable. Might be what he is getting at. Dalot might be capable of playing LB, but it doesn't mean he is great there.

If anybody who actully watched Man Utd in 90s, 2000s, we had many scrappy wins. So that is not an issue. A win is a win. You take 3 points and move on. What worrying is our stamina. This team lacks stamina to press for full 90 mins. This is a big weakness and top teams will exploit us. There hardly anything tactical Ole can do in the match when players' body give up. Although I am sure his team is working on stamina behind the scene.
Very little you can do at this stage of a season, it should have been done pre season.

Blessings to all the lovely customers at the RedCafe. I only got in for the last 15 minutes. It was dire stuff. Presumably the rest of it was brilliant. Well done anyway, a win is a win, I suppose. Most of them look like they needed a lie down.

Poor performance, they were largely the better side for 60 mins
Eh? United were comfortably superior for the first 72 minutes until they scored. Should have won 4-0. Could have been 2-2. Work still for Ole to do but we should have nothing to complain after 7 straight wins!

Very nervy performance from the team . We had a week to rest and cope up so fatigue is not a valid reason. We need replacements in the middle. Ruben Neves would be perfect . Need better wing backs too

Glad to get the 3 points but, it was a big mistake playing Dalot on the left. He was very sloppy on that side and didn't offer good enough support. Him on the right would have been the smarter choice with the last minute change.

Can't wait for Smalling to be back, Jones seemed a moment away from a mistake.

We had our chances to put the game to bed and thankfully didn't matter in the end.

We absolutely battered them. Controlled the game most of the time. Good confident football. 2-1 doesn't justify good football Man Utd played most of the time and chances we had.

Brighton goal was on Jones. How on earth he misjump a simple clearance and concede the goal! preposterous, absolutely outrageous. He has some apologies to do to DDG
Lingard and Young both work really hard, but lack footballing intelligence. If we want to be a great side then need a very good midfield replacement of Lingard. He can be a good substitute but relying on him too much is a risk.
Dalot is promising and shows glimps of his talent but still raw and that is quite evident
Rashford is in great form and confidence. Hope nothing serious of his injury. What a goal that was!
Matic controlled his area very well and also linked up with Pogba. Both have very good chemistry
Herrera is absolutely brilliant. What a change from Jose's Herrera to Ole's! He was everywhere and his positioning intelligence is second to none. Very intillgent person he is.
Martial unlucky but sometimes you make your own luck.
Lindelof was immense. Strong presence.
DDG had no worries until Jones fecked up and invited unnecessary pressure on the entire team
Pogba had quiet game today. Nothing spectacular from him but he did very few mistakes. Good penalty!

7 out of 7 for Ole. Keep this up.

Good Post . Mostly agree

Our midfield was too slow, and our full backs so much limited and not our standards at all. I think OGS has to speak to the board, Surely they think we don't need any additions after these 7 wins! But we need at least a C.B and a R.W for this window, and we can loan Dalot or something.

Hard graft in the end, but job done. Another 3 points on the board. That's the most important thing. Operation Salvage still on course. On to the next...

When Ole was appointed, there was an interesting snippet doing the rounds that went relatively underreported at the time with him apparently telling people that United would be the fittest, most aggressive side in the league by the end of his tenure.

Didn't catch this at the time, thanks. Worth remembering.

Mediocre today, but it happens. We got the points and we are very used to this squad of players struggling to put two halves of football together. That's not on Ole.

Going forward I'd really love to see Sanchez get himself into the team over Lingard. I think he would add another dimension to the attack.

We all know the defence needs an overhaul. I'm sure that will be addressed in the summer

We only really played well in spells and were very lackluster for the last half an hour but that is seven in a row now and we are most definitely in the top four race again.

A good league win. We have been very expressive, and clinical for the last few games, so we need to respect that, as no team can maintain that level of performance, plus the fact our league programme has been somewhat favourable. I am not surprised that this performance may have become a little flat. I did not watch the game, and I suspected tough match. There will be more too.

Ole and Phelan will learn a lot from his players in games like these.

We are very much, work in progress under Ole. These are not his players remember. Also, note much of the debate on these forums over the season.. I think many would agree that our squad has limitations, as does our first XI ok... that isn't having a go, it's a legacy of Mourinho. We are hoping existing players, continue to get better, and many seem to be, which is great.

But we do require some new players, and some simply need to move on. We cannot rely on Pogba to be the conductor, everygame. Too many players wait for him to set the tempo. It is not right, nor fair. Players like Lindgard, Martial for example, need to step up and begin to lead and define performances, matches. Look at the impact of Mane, Hazard, Son... they stamp their personality and quality on their team, and frequently, on the game. I don't see our 'wide players' do this often enough, and it puts us under pressure.

We need more from some of our players. May sound a tough call after the recent performances, but we need more.

Alot of people will hate this comment but second game in a row we needed Fellaini. Not as a starter but as an option when we need him. Height at the back, strength and control in midfield. Plan A is great, plan B (bring off lingard for mata, lukaku, sanchez) is fine in certain circumstances, not this game. If not Fellaini then whats plan C. We shouldn’t be afraid to be less attacking just because of our past manager. Sometimes its needed.

When Liverpool play average and win they're the champions elect.

When we do, our own fans say we're shit.

You can't win every game 4-0 and dominate for 90 minutes. Under Ferguson we had at least 100 matches just like that one against shit sides.

He's injured supposedly.

I thought our substitution was wrong. I think bringing on Mata gave more momentum to them. I cannot even remember his touching the ball. In the absence of Fellaini Lukaku was the only option and I think he did a lot better today than against Spurs. Sanchez should have come on instead of Mata.

These are my thoughts about this game :

1) First half: we played well although we could have also conceded;
2) Second half: we did not assert ourselves and control possession;
3) the Brighton goal showed everyone that we need a 'Koulibaly' as quickly as possible if we are to have a good chance for 4th placing.

Brighton always seem to be a difficult match for us. Happy with the win and overall thought it was a decent performance. First half was a bit of a grind at times but when we got 2 0 up, I thought we just battered them and should have extended the lead. But if you don’t take your chances then there is always a chance the other team can get one back and have a nervy end which is what happened.

Rashford is just getting better and better. Such an exciting display.

Is Lingard being picked because of his social media popularity.

He is one of the main weakness in our team and needs to be dropped.

I thought for the majority of the match we were really good, even the start of the second half when it looked a bit flat, we were still creating chances, commentator said we had 80% possession. Amazing how that goal changes the whole dynamic. We defended better than we have (especially set plays) against a side that can be a handful. Certainly more positives than negatives. Another step closer to top 4.

Think it needs freshened up for the FA Cup, we should have some guys who are desperate to get some minutes and show the manager what they are about

I am so happy for today's three points and that we are now only three points from the top four. The one who said it a month ago I had declared to be an idiot. It's almost unimaginable.

I am also happy that the players really work hard from the start. The negative is that they seem to end up a bit into the second half but hopefully it's also a sign that it will be better afterwards if they continue to work hard.
