PL W FA Premier League

Cardiff City 1:5 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

Sat, 22 December 2018

No long kicks from De Gea. No hoofing from the back. Defenders bringing the ball up. Two midfielders and full backs joining in every attack etc.

So many clear tactical differences compared to before, regardless of the result and opposition.

Not sure I'll ever be happier in a football game than the moment Ole celebrated that 2nd goal like a genuine fan. Unbelievable match. Man I hope he's our Zidane.

OK I couldn't watch the game yesterday, but I just finished watching the reply and even though I gotta say that mandatory 'ik it's only Cardiff' but my God was that a breath of fresh air!

absolutely agree. Only Cardiff might be right but this league even yesterday's result proves as clique as it sounds, you can't guarantee any result. Like already said, it's the manor of the performance and if you are putting away teams like that, we wouldn't be 19 points behind.

Huge improvement in so many areas. Great start and if we can build on that, we will have a great 2nd half of the season.

The difference in our attacking play was like night and day. Instead of shite hoofing to an immobile and isolated Lukaku we had players looking for the ball and moving into the box, instead of the cowardly shite Mou had us playing with 9 men behind the ball and cowering around our 18 yard box we pressed high and won the ball in their half.

63rd minute of the game and our CB comes out with the ball and makes an excellent pass from which our striker almost scores...I mean I didn't even know this was allowed.

What a great game and performance! Couldn't have asked more in Ole's first game in-charge.

Merry Christmas Y'all!
Lindelof carried that run on into the box and if Rash had have squared it, he was through on goal 6 yards out. Great play by Lindelof

Team just looked completely different, player movement was especially evident .

Honestly think even Lukaku will look better in this team, he's never been a great target man, dealing with hoof balls, he'll thrive off balls in behind the back of defences like we saw yesterday.

The season has officially started in Dec for us.

Thanks Mou for classifying us to the Round of 16 but feck off. Defensive, speculative football doesn't suit ManUtd.

Ole said something about the workrate and passing, He doesn't mind if they lose the ball, as long as they run to win it back. That created so much freedom with the players and made them relax. Unlike and LVG and Mou, you feel like it's a crime to lose the ball and the players are afraid of passing it.

Ole also look so happy to be here, he feel honored. Mourinho tend to make me feel like we are lucky to have him.

I expected and improvement with Mouriho going, with attacking football and more pressing, but I didn't expect such a dramatic change. The intricate passing and the movement made me remember what we had been missing and why I loved the club so much. The 3rd goal made me well up a little, especially as we had just conceded and we would have normally reverted to the low block and invited more pressure. Which is also why our defence has looked so bad, as if you keep allowing pressure then generally you will conceded.

I think with Ole giving them a clean slate then the fans on here should also give the players a clean slate too. Our preconceptions of our players abilities due to the way they had been told to play in the past should be swept under the carpet for now until we see them playing over the next few weeks months. Obviously yesterday play needs to continue and a good perfomances doesn't make them world beaters or make Ole SAF mk 2, but it's a giant leap in the right direction.

The key things that Ole has installed in a short time is express yourself, dictate the play and never be outworked. This is the United DNA, not possession for the sake of possession under LVG and solely counter attack/just defend and punt under Mouriho.

I love this club, I love it so much. This is a united side, this is how we approach games.

Great passion my friend and I certainly share your love for United. It has been frustrating recently but once a United fan absolutely always a fan.

Not 100% sure what impact Ole had other than NOT being Jose.

In one game and a handful of pressers he's also proved he's not Moyes or van Gaal. He gets it.

He might not be as successful as desired, but after watching how he's handled the first week I already have much more confidence in him than anyone else post-SAF (including Giggs).

Would we have beaten Cardiff under Mourinho ? I honestly don't think so.
According to that ubiquitous French journo Julian Laurens, PSG though drawing Utd in the CL was a good draw. Repeat, drawing Utd was a good draw!

They don't think that any more...

Loved every minute of it. Superb start for Ole, who, I thought, was excellent "front of house", in dealing with the media, striking a real contrast with what preceded under Jose.

How much, given Ole's & Phelan's very limited time with the players, can you attribute the quality of this performance, and result, directly to their intervention? Or should the plaudits go in greater measure to the input of McKenna & Carrick? Or, in fact, should the players take the lion's share of the adulation?

Finally have something to look for. It doesn’t matter it was just Cardiff, for the past five years we weren’t even able to beat teams like them convincingly. It’s refreshing to have a team that attacks and approaches the game offensively.

Feels so great.

Great day all round.
Was in the cardiff away end opposite the quality travelling support. With a few pockets of reds spread out right across their end.
Great atmosphere all round the stadium fair play to the Cardiff fans they stayed with Warnock and the Cardiff team.
Cardiff fans happy just to stay up.
On a sour note hope the two young lads who took a battering from a big group of cardiff fans in the away end after the third goal were alright.
Fair play to the one lad he didnt give a monkey's in what was a real hostile end.

One thing that struck me yesterday was that we were prepared to take far greater risks when bringing the ball out of defence. Similarly players in the middle were much more willing to leave their position to move into space, even if it left gaps that might lead to a counter attack. Herreras goal was a good example, Pogba had drifted wide and Herrera, rather than sit deep to cover the space he’d left, was attacking the gap in front of the opposition defence. Got lucky with the shot, but if you’re running into space and hammering shots, things happen.

We'll probably get caught out with that from time to time. If Pogba gets that ball wrong, they’re off on the counter attack into open space. But it’s refreshing to see players gamble and on balance I trust our quality up front to get it right most of the time.

It was certainly a marked change from the Liverpool game - then again we went from facing the top team, on a roll, to 3rd from bottom and their lower skill level allowed our players to shine.

A very good start and a few relatively easy fixtures to com, so hope the team builds a winning streak and some confidence before tackling Spurs away in mid-Jan - that will be a test, but I believe that we can build form quickly and give them a proper game.

Hopefully we approach the next few games in the same way and then we'll see where we are against Spurs.

Not sure we can be quite as expansive against Spurs so it'll be interesting to see what he does.

Oh and please Ole don't play Lukaku :nervous:

Has for Keane saying they should have been doing this under Jose, well just shut up Keane look at the tactics, the players he was playing. Football is a simple game if you make it simple, all ole done was play common sense tactics that top
Clubs do, well not a huge fan of Jones and young playing, even matic but he done what was required of a Dm.

There is reason why Keane could never be a top class manager, he couldn’t see the fact jose was bringing a mentality so bad, and he was fighting with players who for me are the teams very important players, who all were part of the build up. One thing I noticed that sets the tone that I noticed, ole subbed matic for fellaini, that already for me sets the tone these two will never ever play together. Jose has matic and fellaini playing every game almost, what does ole do? Keeps matic deep, gets young, shaw, pogba, Herrera, lingard, Rashford and martial rampaging forward, get the front three pressing, along with pogba and Herrera. Balanced 11, and all capable of destroying

The number of passes is especially significant. That fact that we have created more chances then you would surmise more of them are forward passes.
I really love how we're 5 shots above are our average. Even if it's not on goal, I'm glad we're trying. This season has been incredibly hard to watch, with such dour conservative football.

It was great watching that game yesterday. Jose used to throw the odd game like this in, but then revert to type. Can't see Ole doing that.

Yeah, it's like a breath of fresh air. Knowing that Ole is much more positive makes all the difference.

What pleased me most part from the brilliant performance was seeing the celebrations on the bench - the passion is back!

Oh and it was nice to see Pogba with a sensible haircut for once.;)

Still buzzing. Just watched the highlights there. Great performance. Bigger tasks ahead but a great start for Ole. I love that man. Hopefully the start of something special. Need to buy a world class CB in the transfer window. Then top 4 is possible.

Cardiff have the lowest average possession and fewest passes per game in the league so we shouldn't get too carried away by yesterday's statistics.

He did get a coupe wrong in the first half and that nearly led to good counter attacks by Cardiff. He did a couple of cross field passes in our own half and they got cut off.
I still think we need to improve our passing and it will come only with a bit of time as Jose doesn't like us to keep the ball.

It was Cardiff. They are awful. But man...….
That was amazing. It was like watching a different team, not just the 5 goals, the vibe, the smiles on faces, the positive manager grinning and celebrating like a fan - it was a gigantic breath of fresh air, loved every minute of it.

We are not a great team; we have several positions that need a major upgrade. But we are not the 6th best team in the league, we needed a manager to allow the boys to play and to fecking attack and hurt the opposition.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer - welcome home, brother.
