Manchester United 2:1 Chelsea

Post-match discussion

Sun, 25 February 2018

Laboured first half. Better 2nd half. 2 well worked goals and some good defending (2nd half in particular).

Matic was immense, whilst also having some sloppy moments. Lukaku started very ropey but got better and better as the game went on, ended very strongly.

Much needed win against a top side.

Did well to win second half. Of course, this thread will be diluted by 'I told you so' accusations and proclamations that we somehow "got it right".

We weren't very good. Chelsea were equally poor. In isolation, this is the sort of match and performance that would be fine in the context of otherwise good football.

Really, our problems still exist, we seldom looked like scoring for the vast majority of the match and our desire in the first half was absolutely shambolic. The three points is great - and much needed. But our attacking football is still terrible and will cause problems going forward.

As for the players, Matic was brilliant today with a well-timed return to form. Martial criticism is baffling considering he was by far our best attacking player in the first half. Lukaku is continuing his good form which is nice to see. Lindelof looks measurably better on the left side of defence, too.

This win is bigger than 3 points. We seem to have figured out a formation where Sanchez fits and Lukaku performed in a big game. Shout out to Scott McTominay - huge performance from the kid.

Massive massive win.

Dreadful in the first half but we showed some character at last to come back and turn it around. Deserved overall but a big thanks to the linesman for flagging Morata offside.

Lukaku's best game for us so far. I wonder what the hell was Conte thinking with the Pedro-Hazard sub. They just completely surrendered the iniative with that.

We stepped it up in the second half and then started to boss it

Great end to 1st half. Great 2nd half.
Rom MOM for me.

How old is Willian? He should be on our short list along with Pulisic.

Crucial win. Eases pressure off everyone.

Lukaku and Matic won it for us. Lingard with a useful goal. Pogba was also close to his usual self in the second half.

Between us and Liverpool for 2nd and 3rd, with Spurs maybe outside contenders. Bring it on.

Fantastic. We must remember how poorly we started and work to improve it, but let's also toast a great win from behind.

Rom was superb; holding it up, assisting and taking his goal beautifully. Fed on scraps all day but somehow made a silk purse from a sow's ear like the very best often can.

Matic deserves credit for his second half display, as does McTom. Both looked much more solid and were even able to get us going forward. Lingard changed us with his movement and fine header. I'd love to find a place for him in our starting XI, maybe on the right or up with Rom in a 4-4-2 diamond?

I'm still worried about Pogba, looked very languid throughout though he got on it a touch more in his favoured position in the second half.

It feels good not to be punished for our shaky defensive collective today, and to be rewarded for sticking at it and fighting our way back.

Happy happy day, now let's watch these shitheads at Wembley.

Great win, great performance. Special shout out to Matic and Lukaku. Well done to Jose too on tactical changes in 2nd half.

Massive result for us. Keeps us at the top of the 2-4 race.

Some of my fav moments in the game - Lukaku's 92nd min run, Lingard's tackle as soon as he came, Valencia's holding on the ball around 85' , Smalling coming out of back and getting fouled by Morata

Huge result against a top 4 rival and nice to see Matic and Lukaku performing like this. Hopefully the team gains more confidence from this result and put all the doom and gloom talk on pause for a bit. Continuity and a run of decent result is needed now.

Not that good performance. Lukaku and Lingard did very well and Smalling to have to say.

Big win. Lukaku really good another positive. Lingard great as sub showing he is still in good form.

Big result today, and make no mistake, we needed all three points!

In fact it was doubly enjoyable due to the fact that it's the first time in ages I've not been able to access the MDT and the game simultaneously.

It was so nice not to watch the game under a cloud of negativity and I think I'll be avoiding it from now on.

Bet it was fun in there today, all the way from line-up announcement to 32 mins in

EDIT: Now, C'mon The Arse! … I know, just read it myself!

Lukaku good in 2nd half and did well for the goal in the first. Matic played well.

Huge 3 points.

United Twitter getting a bit ahead of themselves

 Too excited. Probably counted Mourinho 1-0 Conte.

I felt that McTominay was immense for us in the central midfield position. His dirty work freed up Pogba and he kept his passing simple. He played well, bar that one mistake which led to their goal. His man making on Hazard was a joy to watch and i hope he can carry on from here.

I think we should start looking for fullbacks. Valencia and Young, while defensively stable, is horrible going forward. Their crossing accuracy is practically non-existent.

I think Sanchez had a rather alright game but I think he can do better. He really should have scored to be honest.

The formation we held when we didn't have the ball with Sanchez central, Lukaku on the right and Martial on the left suits us.

Overall, big win and let's carry on from here.

Edit: Forgot his amazing forward pass to Lukaku which lead to our winner.

@Damien how many times has Martin Atkinson reffed is v Chelsea. It seems to be almost every game. I’m sure it’s not.

But last 10 years??

Great result. But I still cannot understand the pedestrian nature of our play. I accept we will never be the pressing team under Jose but at least show a bit of urgency. The primary reason for the our counters breaking down is precisely this lack of urgency which allows the whole defence to get back before we get anywhere near the opposition box.

And just to add not seen much praise for Mctominay....
Thought he did a very good job today.

McTominay was class, Lukaku battled all game long and Matic had a top second half. We are still lacking attacking support from the wings - Sanchez and Martial were way too ineffective despite combining for the first goal.

Really good result - but still questions to be answered.

I liked that 2nd half, very decent win.

I also take back nearly everything I've said about Lukaku.

McTominay was excellent.

3 points thank goodness.

The return of Jesse Messi:D McTominay did well the lad.

A good result against a very good team after a very trying week.

Brilliant result for us after Newcastle debacle. Should go a long way in securing top 4
