Manchester United 4:0 Everton

Post-match discussion

Sun, 17 September 2017

One way to look at today is that we won 4-0 while not being at our best. I'll take that any day of the week.
First 25 mins was great as was last 15. In between it was disappointing the way we let them come at us and didn't impose ourselves more. Having said that, I admired the desire to get forward and score more at 2-0 up.
I think we missed Pog and I hope reports if a 10 week absence are incorrect.
Great cameo from Tony Martial. Matic is making a real difference in midfield. DDG, I think he is fantastic and makes difficult saves look easy. There's no way we should contemplate selling him.

A lot to be said for winning and winning well when not playing well.

Don't think Matic-Fellaini is a viable midfield partnership, in a two at least. We only looked properly balanced when Herrera came on.
Problem is, maybe we'll be unbalanced in any midfield two without Pogba, be it with Herrera or whoever. Funny, last season people were saying it was Pogba who couldn't play in a two.

Performance not up there, but based on the cliche "If you are winning without playing well, it is the form of a champion" or something like that. I take that than playing well like last season but didn't win.

Like some poster said before, some kind of arrogance/complacency is creeping in into some of the players and I hope Mourinho will do something about it. I am glad that it happened early in the season, so there is still time to recover and repair whatever is broken.

Didn't think we played well, but pretty good to score 4 and win.

Can't complain too much.

Last season people were saying Herrera was first pick and a trusted soldier and all that bollocks. Total speculation on their part as not many are privy to Jose's thoughts.

That's different. They were talking about Pogba having seen him at best in the left of a midfield three for Juventus, none to do with what's on Mourinho's mind.

Wow. What a frustrating game to watch. We didn't play particularly bad overall. It's just that our team got frustrated not getting things to work in the final third. We pushed and pushed and started to allow Everton to get back in the game after we got frustrated.

Mikhi is such a good player but so frustrating to watch. Losing the ball too easily and often dribbling into trouble.

Rashford didn't play particularly sharp today either.

Our goals towards the end of the game were mostly down to Everton's changes, they were also chasing the game a little but our subs provided the little bit of stability we needed to put pressure back on Everton. I think Jose made a few good subs that helped us towards the end.

The results and how we played would have been very different if Lukaku didn't miss that big chance early in the game.

Its funny, last year we play bad and we draw or lose, this year we pkay bad and win 4-0. Its happened twice now. Champions win regardless of performance so id happily take 10 more games like that! Last year we would of drew that game.

Lukaku misses too many easy chances for me. Hes scoring still which is great! Martial should be starting ahead of rashford. Miki got into great spaces but his touch and decisions let him down. Fellaini was average as usual. Matic was brilliant as usual valencia his usual self, good stuff. Defence was solid and mata okay. For me motm was young. Solid game, defended well and attacked well. Would be very happy for him to keep the left spot! He has a drive and passion darmian and blind both dont have. Shaw is too fragile, i feel as if words and grass shatter him

I thought Fellaini was brilliant today. He was like a human wall in midfield. When we were in possession he even got involved alot in the buildup, stretching the play with his wide runs. I may have missed a couple of minutes cooking food, but to me, he had a really good game, I'd say one of our best players today.

I really don't care when the goals come. I'm rather enjoying the late rallies at the end of games tbh, as it will stand us in good stead when it really matters. Another goal scorer to add to the list with a screamer, more than 2 goals scored again and another clean sheet. Can't ask for anymore. Makes the Stoke result even more galling but need to move on from that.

I just hope we rinse Real Madrid for De Gea if he does indeed decide to leave next season. For me he's the best goalie in Europe by far.

I don't understand all this negativity from some people though, a victory is a victory, but even so the reasons for the mediocre performance for the majority of the match were obvious to me, several players with terrible decision making gave the ball away over and over again, mata and mikhi the most notable ones, herrera made the difference coming in holding the midfield, i think we won't see such a performance against top oppositions cause the mentality will be different anyway.

Poor performance vs a poor team. Anyone 'very happy' must be a pretty result oriented person... results orientation doesn't get you anywhere over the long term, just makes you feel good over the short term. Hopefully we improve massively in coming games without pog

He is amazing, probably 2nd only to Neuer..

Like many have said, not the best performance but 4-0 is a great result.

Which I agree with, but it has to be said...this is the 3rd time this season the score line has finished 4-0.

I believe the team is actually deceiving slightly on the eye, you can't just fluke 4-0 every other week without being a very good side, far better than a lot of us realise.

We are beating Everton 4-0 in a game where we create 6-7 big chances, and in a match where Mkhitaryan, Rashford and Lukaku all play well below what they are capable of. I think that sums it up....

He is amazing, probably 2nd only to Neuer..

Neuer is overhyped. Not saying he's rubbish but De Gea is way better. He's been playing in the toughest league for years and delivered at the highest level consistently.

But it's all about opinions. :)

So you were happier when we were dominating teams last season and coming away with plenty of draws?

I guess I am human and was happier when we got the result, but it is patently obvious that being happy with a win we didn't deserve doesn't serve the long term goal of the club

Matic   He is fecking incredible
This, basically. It's the kind of player we've been lacking for a long time.

Breaks up play. Is calm on the ball. Can see a pass. Links play between the lines. Class act.

Good win today. 4-0 flattered us but battering teams when we're not playing at full capacity is ominous for the rest of the league.

You liked Van Gaal though didn't you? Probably explains your opinion.

Everton are not a poor team. They drew with City.

I am probably a fan of giving a manager time vs modern day manager changes and I probably liked the idea of giving giggs a go so I made a case for keeping LVG (although not once mourinho was available, assuming we changed our model and gave mourinho some time)

Valencia would have got a bollocking off LVG for not controlling the ball before shooting

I was impressed with Martial's penalty kick. Did you see how he waited for Pickford to commit himself first, before picking his spot even though the keeper was well off his line? A much better effort than when Lukaku made it easy for Schmeichel to save (although the ref should have ordered a re-take for him being well off his line when the kick was taken).

I think City have come up a gear since then and Everton have moved down a gear since they spend another x million and brought in another 1-2 #10s to shoehorn into 1st 11. They might improve again later in the year if they give up on playing the way they are but right now they look a very very poor team

I really don't get that logic? City didn't deserve to win against Bournemouth but they did and got the 3 points to show for it. That result and 3 points absolutely matter; short term, long term, however you want to frame it.

There's been loads of games where teams didn't 'deserve' to win because of some dubious refereeing decision but it happens. Teams have won games with ridiculous stats like 37% possession or 1 shot on target. Again, it happens.

We scored 4 goals and Everton didn't. How could we not deserve to win that game??

They proved a tough opposition.

If we wouldn't have got that early goal this would have been a 0-0.

They defended in numbers and played a tight game, didn't give us space to play and without Pogba we struggled to dominate at times, but hey, three points and on we go, joint top.

You can't say better than that!!

Was bored, (no aftv) so went to see Everton forum, and their thoughts..
1-0
Get rid of koeman and his negative anti football...
"Rooney on the counter"

Literally 6 United players he would have to beat.
Seriously, get to f Koeman
Wow...we strung together like 5 passes there.

Shame they were all backwards.
What an awful set-up. Koeman parked the bus 30 mintues before kickoff and has not a single bit of pace in the side.
De Gea sitting up against the post playing angry birds!
How have we spent 150 million quid and we play the most defensive crap footy the world has ever seen?

Spend 150 million and set up to fail.

Out.
Spend 50mil on an attacking mid, play him on the wing. Great logic moonhead
200 million spent and we still have Williams and jagielka starting at the back. Amazing
Mick Hucknell looks like how we play football
Rooney is really really really annoying.
2,3,4-0
...Williams my MoM. Hope it's not the kiss of death.
few mins later Mikhi scores, and poster gets a lot of replays, not nice.
Go on and get a third United. Burn it all down.

I'd rather be Stoke under Pulis than play this way. Koeman is such a [Poor language removed] bitch.
These are not winning the league. A good side would have buried these today
Man Utd have played this like a training game - after that first goal they basically havent broken sweat. Toying with us.
Pass the bleach
Lukaku to get the third, I reckon. I can feel it...
Lovely touch from Lukaku shushing the crowd for an assist, good footballer but the type of bloke you hope suffers an ACL
:eek::nono:
We are a poor football team. Bereft of ideas. Rooney is the only winner in the entire team
Mourinho said 'Come on Everton , score, I dare you' . He was playing with us the whole time.
quess who scored
Celebrating at your former club eh you classless bellend
[Poor language removed] off Lukaku! No respect at all!
Hope the [Poor language removed] gets his legs broken asap. Snaking [Poor language removed].LMAO he scored and assisted. I'm done
Very disrespectful from Lukaku but exactly what I expect of the man.
Stinks the place out, gets a goal. Standard.
Big shithouse rat
Rom misses free kick: HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAH

3 seconds later: FFSSSSSSSSSS
Hahaha that's so Lukaku it's unreal. Awful all game, gets a free goal when the game is dead in the dying minutes.
I actually despise Lukaku, awful [Poor language removed] him
Amazing.

lol at people saying he's being disrespectful. It's football, it's his job. Get over it.
Spend over £100m - Get relegated.

Everton that.
what a joke. only called the pen after they all moaned. not even a pen
Well, I had 4 nil in the poll....
me too :D
Damn I had a fiver on 5 nil, should've gone 4.
I had 8. There's still time.
So mentally weak as soon as the second went in just collapsing
I'm devastated tbh. Our team is appalling. We've squandered £140m
2 for Chelsea
3 for Tottenham
3 for Atalanta
4 for Utd

12 goals conceded in 4 games

What an amazing defence

0 goals scored

What an amazing attack

Gutless defence, toothless attack
Never felt so embarrassed to be an everton fan
3 consecutive heavy defeats with no goals scored. Doesn't matter who the opposition are, that shouldn't happen ever.

Only Koeman to blame. Not good enough.

Koeman out.
Can't wait to get rid of Koeman. Really can't.

Baffling tactics as per.
I cant believe we sold that cu*t to united, should've shipped him to PSG for half the price
Abysmal.

Feel sorry for Rooney. We've spent 150m and taken several steps backwards.
huh?
That's the difference in quality. We've signed utter garbage . Someone must go.

Great result, poor performance. Noticed we were looking quite lazy when we went 1-0 up. Closing down was laboured even in the first half. Lucky to get away with a convincing win. Hopefully improvement for next game.

Eh? We didn't deserve to win 4-0 but we deserved to win the game. Lukaku should have put us out of sight in the first half.

So, the draw today would serve better to our long-term goals?

This. Dont know what Crashoutcassius is trying to say.

Probably didn't deserve a 4 0 win but am very happy nonetheless.

We absolutely deserved 4-0. There were no offside goals or goals which should've been disallowed.
Everton got everything they deserved today and they were lucky it wasn't 5 or 6.

For the last few years I have witnessed a steady decline in our expectations and performances.
We finally have a Galactico class manager who is having us pummel teams and some of you saying "We didn't deserve to score so many goals". WTF!!!!

Yes, the performance was far from perfect, but the scoreline reflects perfectly what happened on the pitch. Everton did not have 25 shots on goal, with no result. We dominated Everton and the scoreline reflects this.

That was funny. Thanks for posting them. I always find it amusing to read through the angry rants of other forums.

Agreed. We deserved 4-0.

Don't give a feck about deserving. I'm just enjoying the scoreline, 3rd 4-0 of the season, enjoy it caftards. Remember when we struggled for goals.

well, if you think we deserved to win today then being happy with the performance isn't being 'result oriented' anymore, is it

Agree with that. The players even tried to press in the last minute to get the 5th and go ahead of City on GD. It was great to see.

Was watching up until the 80th min thinking how shit we'd been in the second half and then bang!

Still, well chuffed with the result but would like for us to put teams away before the 80th min comes around.

Disappointing but not hugely surprising; pretty poor balance to that team. Nothing much going forward from the full backs, no creativity or athleticism in the midfield, Mata doing "a job" out wide and Lukaku isolated up top.
