Draw away and win at home vs the big sides has been Mourinho's approach since he returned to England. I would have taken the point before the match and Jose will likely be the happier of the two managers.

In terms of performance, I didn't see much in the way of quality from either side and certainly nothing to shake me from my preseason conviction that neither of these teams will finish in the top two this year.

Team that scores one goal more than opponent deserves to win. If shots are 20-1, and possession is 80-20, if you didn't score, you didn't deserve to win.

So if a team wins they deserve to win, if a team loses they deserve to lose and if a team draws they deserve to draw?

Too much respect for Liverpool who were missing their best player. We should have been at them. Everyone looked pedestrian. No control, no class, no creativity, poor energy.

It's a decent point at a tricky place and despite being wretched going forward we were seldom in danger of conceding apart from the one save by Dave & the Can chance. We had a clear cut chance fluffed by Lukaku.

It's also a result that effectively eliminated Liverpool from the title race and I'm sure in August we'd have all taken them being zero threat as early as October.

I don't think today was all about Mourinho's negative tactics. A huge part of us not being able to get forward was because we lost too many individual battles from the midfield forward and had a severe lack of quality when we did get forward.

Why are people coming in here saying this? No one denies it isn't a great result at anfield, people are pissed off that we didn't even try against one of the worst defences in the league. We are better than that! We have agreat players, but everytime we got the ball we just handed it back to them. We were shite.

Agree but I just feel we missed Fellaini and especially Pogba and it would have been different if they or just Pogba played.

If we'd matched up with 3 in the middle and had Pogba's drive and change of gear it might have helped, but I think one of the biggest problems is the mentality Jose approaches these matches with, he wants to soak up pressure and rely on the counter which is risky as you can end up hemmed in unless you have the incision on the counter.

Liverpool's record against the top 6 is unreal. City beat them comfortably but it was a close game until they went down to 10 men. We had a few players out. To play for a point was sensible, our individual players performances made it all look a lot less professional than it was.

Even Graeme fecking Souness understands today better than a lot of United fans on here!

It was more I think the tactics didn't work that well. Would have liked more a 3-5-2 since we then could maybe attack a bit more centrally. Without Mata we also had very little creativity going forward. Valencia and Young I guess did well in spells winning us some corners, but they will hardly create much apart from bombing in crosses into a box with few players for us.

Liverpool dominated the game and we did manage to salvage a point. Fair enough, but we did to do more on our own. We need to find better ways to create chances from counter attacks and using the space given to us.

I am happy with the point given that Liverpool played much better than us. Still it was our worst performance this season. Smalling and Valencia the few players that did well. De Gea great in goal and saved us today.

Before I say the rest, overall we were poor, slightly more so than Liverpool.

Our defense mostly nullified their attack. I didnt actually know Firminho was on the pitch until about the 70th minute when I noticed his name. Coutinho tried but was on the whole well dealt with. Other than a bit in the first half we made very little in the way of opportunities and Lukaku barely was played into the game.

I do think the referee had a large impact on the game, made us fight against the current for a lot of the game. He didnt give the Coutinho call on the edge of the box, and didnt card Lukaku when he could have. In return never carded Liverpool for dives, and repeatedly he gave a lot of perverse decisions on smaller incidents, and let Liverpool away with ridiculous amounts of late hits after the ball, usually enough that the player is taken out of the return pass or being able to deal with next phase, time and time again it happened.
The dual decisions I think against Young, a foul their way when he got ahead and stopped, entitled to his postion only to be called up, yet when he got clipped from behind he signed for crossing and let it go was ridiculous.

I'm seen some saying Smalling was good but I disagree. His extremely limited ability on the ball meant we couldn't create openings to get through Liverpool's press and had to resort to passing it to DDG in the end. Stupid, stupid foul to get a yellow. He sometimes just completely abandoned his area and on one occasion left a Pool player (Firmino I think?) unmarked. One on one I thought he did well though.

Herrera was probably out worst player though. Can't blame that on Jose half of our midfield is out but comparing this to his performance at Anfield last season was like day and night

First and foremost the aim for the season has always been to win the league. Ask Fergie what he was aiming to achieve at the start of the season and the answer would be 'win the league'. By whatever means necessary. Anything else is secondary. I wonder if you are a 'football' fan first and foremost, and maybe lacking the tribal nature of a football fan that has been brought up in the culture of English football and local rivalry? Not judging either way, just saying that we're coming at this from a different perspective.

Can't I be both? You think Real fans are not tribal when they play Atlético or Barcelona? I don't see the two as mutually exclusive. There is nothing more painful than watching Liverpool win but there is also nothing more annoying for me to have our team associated with the role of spoilers and game killers. I am tired of watching the best European clubs dominate through pro active football with our teams being reduced to the role of "having to defend well". I could accept the financial disparity if I were a Liverpool or Arsenal fan but when you look at our finances and status, there is no reason why we shouldn't be on the same level as the likes of Barcelona and Real. Watching us, this is absolutely impossible under Mourinho. I know he can win the league, Leicester won it for goodness sake. It is not where I think our ambition should stop long term though.

As for Fergie, I think you are simplifying it to suit your argument. Fergie was obsessed about conquering Europe, not just winning the CL. Looking back on his interviews and books, nothing annoyed him more than the notion that his teams could not play toe to toe with the best in the world. Just look at how he tried to allude to Queiroz being behind our approach against Barcelona in 2008 and not him. He was an alpha and felt United should play with the ego and authority of the very biggest clubs, no different to any other big club really. Of course he could not always pull it off, most of the time, our gung ho approach either cost us or we could not even implement it but that does not mean that Fergie's vision of us was that of a team that should look to be the pro active one, rather than one that only wins.

I totally understand going to Anfield with a defensive setup. For most, this still means having some sort of plan to score a goal and ask some questions of the oppositions defence, to try and exploit the gaps in behind the team dominating. It's a valid approach.

I think mourinho is the only top manager around who thinks it's valid to just not bother with an attacking plan for 90 minutes and defend from first to last whistle.

It's weird really. And given our frailties, you'd have to think there is some payoff in testing our defence at opportune moments. Mourinho didn't even want to know about that today. It's not like we're barca in their heyday. Hard to justify really.

United have a number of key players injured. I get the complaints about the performance but much better point for United than Liverpool in what is a tricky and unpredictable fixture.
