Manchester United 0:0 Liverpool

Post-match discussion

Sun, 24 February 2019

Was so impressed with us today. So many injured players, the plan must have gone out of the window. Players kept their defense in check and also created chances. I'm proud of this team. Gave absolutely everything!!

Thought we were great, especially with the injuries. Disappointed that some couldn't wait to jump on Ole with regards to Lingard sub. He was caught between a rock and a hard place with both Rashford and Mata being injured pretty-much simultaneously.

Gary Neville can feck off.
Shouldn't stop him from getting the job but he deserves to be jumped on for it. Lingard barely made the bench. No way he was gonna last long enough. I assume we wanted to score and then maybe sub him off second half but with Rashford limping that wouldn't be wise since we were gonna need to sub him off too.

Honestly Liverpool suck. At full strength we would have beaten them.

Liverpool did not look like a championship side today. Based on this match I expect City to win the title fairly easily.

Said previously that if the management team were willing to risk a semi injured Lingard over a fully fit Sanchez, what does that tel you about Sanchez? All you need to know.

Sanchez did nothing. Would rather have one of the academy kids on the bench to throw on
I've had it with Sanchez... At his wages and fanfare, he seems to get a bye while everyone climbs on lukakus' back (they both deserve stick) but at least Kaku did something today

I hear ya but that was too much of a risk especially since Lingard was feeling his hammy during the warmup run on the touch line. Sanchez in instead of Lingard might have left us a useful sub towards the end.

Have to hand it to Lukaku as well, he did two really good things on the ball in the build up to Lingard's chance, which is basically miraculous for him.

Rest of the game he was his usual useless self with the ball, but he did do a lot of work defensively.

Was expecting to be a bag of nerves in the second half but it was about as comfortable as I've felt watching us in this type of game for a while, Liverpool created nothing, we looked a lot more assured defensively and their possession was largely meaningless and didn't translate into pressure at all. The most disappointing thing was our lack of composure or quality when in and around their box, we had a few decent chances and with a bit more care and thought could have nicked a goal or two.

Overall we did well to cope with the injury issues we had and still pose the most threat in the game so hopefully the injured players aren't out too long and we don't find ourselves playing catch up for top 4 again.

Michael Oliver favours ABU again.
Has sent off United players 4 times for 2 yellow cards and has NEVER sent a player off for any team playing against United.

Another gear?

That was their gear. Lack of plan B, hoof the ball to Origi.

Utter utter crap football
Apart from the odd game, that is pretty much what they’ve been serving up all season yet the press wax lyrical about them. Really, United were there for the taking today starting with Martial and Matic out. Then the injuries happening in the game really threw Uniteds game plan out of the window. Add into that Rashford playing with one leg we also had Lukaku and Sanchez both playing normally so things were stacked against United yet this “super team” Liverpool weren’t able to lay a glove on United. They’ve hoodwinked everyone this season.

Young was crap the entire game. Glad he was not on Salah
Young was fine.
I generally defend Young, but was poor today. That said, trying to form a partnership with Lukaku appears to be a challenge.
In fairness, despite a number of hiccups we progressed down that right flank and created better opportunities than on the left, or Liverpool on either.

Good point but the gamble almost paid off. Sanchez would never have gotten into the position lingard did

It would have been Rashford in the centre ;)

Either way, we will never know!

The Lingard decision was just a flat out mistake even before he came on. At best he was on the bench to give 20 minutes, well that's what he managed.

Great spirit and we had the better of the chances to get all 3 points. The organization is a lot better overall and outside of Young, that defense is looking solid.

Considering our injuries and playing with a crocked Rashford most of the game we lacked any fluidity and quality. Both teams will be content with a draw. Defence which had been so ruthlessly criticised was superb. Work rate and discipline from the boys was a joy to watch.

It’s a risk but if Lingard would have scored that chance before going off, no one would have questioned the sub and instead it turns into a great managerial decision. Management is about taking calculated risks, this was one of them. It appears Sanchez’s days are numbered however.

So in the space of a week, Liverpool has struggled against a Bayern side struggling with Injuries and a Man United side struggling with injuries.

I think they still very well might win it but since Christmas, they've looked toothless, to say the least. It's gonna be a long run-in for them now.

United did great considering the circumstances. When we'd made all subs I had already resigned myself to the possibility that we're losing 3-0. Credit to the lads for not only making sure that didn't happen and that De Gea had feck all to do, but also looking the most likely to win the game.

Liverpool should be disappointed with the result. They might have taken a point before the game but all our injuries meant they’ll rarely get a better chance to leave OT with 3 points.

Like @Shimo said, Lingard probably wasn't ready for more than 20 minutes of play. Bringing him on when there's about 70 mins left to play - despite that one chance - think the risk outweighed the reward. Probably says more about my managerial style :p

On a side note: we played 5 academy graduates today. Liverpool? 0 once again. There's nothing special or romantic about Liverpool Football Club. They're just a big club buying their way to succes like most other clubs.

Shaw, Lindelof, Smalling all were fantastic. McTominay surprised me a lot as well - biggest compliment I can give him is I didn't notice Matic was out.

Young did well defensively but kept aimlessly pumping the ball up front needlessly inviting pressure on. Rashford was below par but hard to blame him considering he was injured.

Lukaku was crap. I know he put in a few good crosses but the game stopped near enoughenough time it went down our right hand side. Him, alongside Pereira and Sanchez, are not good enough.

Injuries are worrying. Lingard will be out for a while and I hope Matic and Herrera are back soon as they're pivotal to our midfield. Luckily, Mata isn't too much of a miss.

Well it’s also down to the player. If Lingard says he can play then Solskjaer isn’t going to say no. If anything Lingard should have said his hamstring was tight before the team selection went out so he must have felt he could play.

Ole did have a chat with Rashford and was clearly weighing up the risks involved. No idea what Rashers said but clearly left Ole willing to gamble on Lingard.

For what it's worth, it's a gamble aimed at getting an opening goal so I'd rather focus on the positive mindset than call him naive once it didn't work.

Just logged on and don't know if it's already been discussed to death here or in another thread but "the sun was right, you're murderers" was loud and clear on the TV. Thousands of idiots. Think it was short lived though and atmosphere sounded great second half

You're probably correct with our injuries. Being an away game for Liverpool and United on a high probably meant they weren't expecting a win. So I suppose they will be happy from that perspective

Agreed. I didn't think Liverpool had a chance of breaking down United without Firmino. I think in the 2nd half both teams more or less played for the draw. I thought a draw was fair. Liverpool dominated possession, but United had the better chances.

Didn't call him naive mate, just pointed out that that was my only complaint for the whole game. Obviously Ole can't see into the future, he took a gamble and it didn't pan out. That's how management works.

Solskjaer said pre-match Lingard wasn't fully fit, so he obviously knew. It was a hight risk gamble that backfired. Doesn't change the fact he's doing an excellent job.

Souness sounds like he's trying to convince himself more than anything, I don't think anyone expected us to have more possession than them today so I don't know how that's so significant for him.

My overall average seems quite harsh at 5.6, specially considering I gave out a few 9s (Shaw/Lindelof). I'd say 6 is about right for the actual performance though I guess, which was good considering all those injuries. If points were for digging in it'd be 10.

Thousands?

Heard nothing at the game.

It was a gamble that didn't work out.
Still happy with Ole

And can not imagine our approach today under Jose with the players missing before, and injured in the first half.

Souness is the biggest Fundament out there, too biased to be a pundit, fair play to Carrah hate the guy in so many ways but love and respect him as a pundit, gives credit where it is due, and big enough to lay criticism where it needs to be! Souness wearing rose and crap coloured spectacles today and licking them clean the filth beast.

For me the best couple of performances of the Ole reign have been in response to the PSG loss, bottle grit, and deteirmination today did for a uninspired Liverpool.... second half there was only one team in it regadless of possession, and we should have and could have won,

Props to Ole this is proper UTD.....

And as for defensive play, there is being negative and passive in defense (Mou) and being possitive and aggressive in defence (Ole), there is a world of difference, really enjoyed todays game despite the injuries.

Oh and Milner should have been off with 20 minutes to go.
