PL D FA Premier League

Manchester United 0:0 Manchester City

Post-match discussion

Sat, 12 December 2020

You guys are a bit harsh, you were big underdogs on the back of bombing out of Europe and needed some stability and you were comfortable for the most part one or two chances aside. You can't just go out and blow everyone away these days, even if you are Man United. For a team having a nightmare season you are ahead of City and right in the title race after 11 games. Its gonna be a season of weirdness, all about hanging in there.
You are right. Sorry the sensible words had to come from a City-supporter. Unfortunately some fans are one a different planet, “Unrealisticos“.

Bissaka, Lindelöf and Shaw top 3 players for me. Good to see the team acting like one team from start to finish, not two different teams playing one half each.

City showing they really have dropped a level or two on last season. In this moment they would previously have capitalised on our predicament.

We did OK though, it wasn't all about how bad they were. Take one of our half-chances and we'd have won. In a non-VAR season we'd have had a pen aswell.

But overall, yeah, boring, negative game.

The travesty of the UCL Group Stage shouldn't hide the fact that this was a glorious draw against a club with limitless budget and led by a master tactician.

Let's savour this point.

I’m really annoyed at that, we didn’t show anything really - happy for the draw same as the Chelsea game. It’s not ebough.

Thought we played well and knocked the ball around with confidence. We could have been nervous but handled well.

Some nice break away as well but lacked the quality to finish

I am annoyed, especially in the last 10 minutes where we didn't show ambitious to win the game. Just wasting times and happy with draw. Same old tactic he used against Chelsea and Arsenal and we get caught by the penalty by Auba. I understand the cautionous in the beginning but wish we could have changed the tactic in the last 10 mins to win the game.

When Chelsea win the league, and they will, no one will question when they nullified the game against the stronger opposition...

Think I watched a different game to the rest of the world. I actually found much to admire here and thought we looked pretty comfortable, organized throughout and not completely reliant on the same old approach down one side. If we’d had an ounce of this organization earlier in the week we might be still be in the Champs League, which for me at this point of the season would be enough to think we’re doing fine. As it is, I have to think of the league form only now. Maguire generally rock solid, some odd passes aside, Shaw played as well as I ever saw, Mctom gets lots of grief here but to me he was very effective at breaking up play and getting about them, City resorting to endless annoying fouls in midfield (we would have prevented thair one big chance if Wan B had actually done same, not that it matters now). Have to think our home form will improve (I mean, I HAVE to think that!) and I believe we’re a match for anyone in the league so am keen to see where this takes us.

We got the job done, which was the scoreless draw, but the total absence of any ambition to score is really hard to take as a supporter of the club. Is this what we’ve been reduced, scraping out bore draws?

The reality is this is where we are. This reality is sad.

Ole: ”it is not in our genes to play for a 0-0”

Yeah right, we believe you

Strange game where neither team showed up. I kind of expected City to be more attacking considering Utd were under pressure to not lose this.

The 2nd half from Utd was one of the most defensive performances that I can remember.

I'm happy for the point. Don't have much to say apart from thankfully it's over.

I hate this boring over-played season with it's paper cut out fans and fake crowd noise. It lacks finesse and it lacks passion and I just don't care what happens. It's just fekking pointless.

The most boring "derby" I've ever seen.

Disappointed we didnt show any ambition to try to win, but seriously shocked that city didnt either.

Absolute dog shit of a game to watch, probably more to be expected from Utd than City right now.

Agree. No passion. No points.

Umm duh obviously Donny or Pogba.
And the reason Fred had a red card was Ole in the first place.
You want to play a AM (VdB) or a player who is less good in counter pressing and about to leave his zone, than Matic, whose role is to defend and protect the back line? Haha no wonder Ole can never win... Fred red card is on Fred and the referee, full stop.

Yeah I’m pissed off cause I made this point in another thread (original match day thread) and forgot to leave that point out here. Fred makes us tick, and he should have been pulled off during that PSG game and he would haven’t got a second yellow.
In hindsight, it is something he will have to learn. That things sometimes are unfair but you have to be very careful when you avoid a red like he did in the fist half.

Think Ole is grateful for the draw. Leipzig was a blow and we are picking up injuries.

City had a much fresher side with the luxury of rotating heavily midweek

When Fred got that knock and Matic warmed up you knew the focus was on defence and we were going to try and win the game in the moments.

Our 4 attackers weren't quite on it and you wonder had he gambled with VDB for Fred could we have nicked it

City far too reliant on KDB and not the same side without Silva or Aguero (injured again?)

Fred red card is on Fred and the referee, full stop.

This is just not true. Fred should have the control to stop making stupid tackles, correct but Ole has to manage the team and recognise the danger of the Red card. There are literally tons of examples.

This point even being debated is laughable!

Not really. The reality is OGS has dropped standards and expectations. When he started, he said that a club like United should aspire to win every game but as the days go on and expectations rise, he employs a safety first approach. There is no risk taking at all in big games nowadays.

Any mention of fernadinho’s tactical foul on pogba the ref played advantage? Why didn’t he give him a yellow card when play stopped?
Fernadinho’s one of the best defensive mids and good at what he does, but it’s damn infuriating how refs let him get away with these card-worthy challenges that break up counterattacks. It’s the inconsistency that pisses me off. Whether he does it in the first minute of the match or in the 80th, if it’s a bad enough challenge he should be booked. Seems like he always finishes a full 90 minutes making at least 4-5 of these tactical fouls only getting carded once.

Garbage match, no purpose or intent from both teams. It's like both the managers asked their players to not try to score. A point against City is not bad in the grand scheme of things, but they were there for the taking today.

Our results at home against the "top 6" this season:

United 1-6 Spurs
United 0-1 Arsenal
United 0-0 Chelsea
United 0-0 City

It really isn't good enough.
But but...we are excellent against top six and only struggle against bottom teams innit?

Jokes apart. It was cowardly game between two cowardly teams set up by cowardly managers.

This is dross, mate.

With our current inconsistent form and the team we have, current league climate, I'm taking this to the bank. Was a boring match, but some resolute defending, finally!

Fred stayed because we needed to win. If we went ahead, he would have been subbed for Matic and we would change shape. The fact that people don’t understand it is what’s really laughable here!

Last year we countered them. And our results were good. This year they all feared us while we had a preseason issue at the beginning.

None of this matters. We are 4 pts from the top. That’s about it. The teams above will lose pts and we will win. And second half of the season, we will finish strong. And see how it goes.

If we'd done this at least once in our last 2 CL games, we'd still. Be in competition.

Don't get all the talk about City thrashing us. They've been poorer at scoring, this season. They've sorted out their defensive issues for the most part.

Boring 1-1 draw is my bet.

Got the score wrong, but otherwise prediction played out

A point here is fine if we go on a run after this game

Wow, that was dull. You know the saying about not being able to take you eyes off something? Well, it was hard to keep your eyes on this: could have gone out, fried an egg, heated beans, made toast... and come back in having missed nothing! No idea how Ole thinks it's our best recent performance against them - it's that sort of comment that convinces me he's not the man for United. Just delusional: the fact is City was poor and for some reason didn't seem interested in trying to beat us.

All that said, we did manage to not give away a goal in side 15 minutes and there were some quite good performances. I though Maguire had one of his best games, Lindelof didn't put a foot wrong and Luke Shaw looked fairly assured. I still remain worried by AWB's positional sense (or lack of it).

In midfield, I thought Fred was OK and Scotty was possibly my MoM, biting into tackles and closing down. There were flashes from Pogba too, mainly in defensive roles and bringing the ball out from the back - although he still tends to take on one man too many and doesn't shield the ball like a world-class player. Fred was OK too.

The trouble though was while the midfield was good defensively, they created next to nothing so Greenwood and Rashford never got much of a look in. I barely even realised Martial had come on, he was so anonymous (again). I do think Cavani, had he have been fit, might have carved out one good chance.

At least KdB and Sterling didn't tear us apart as I feared but it was possibly the soulless, bloodless derby I can remember for ages - and I just don't buy into it being down to no fans. It just seemed both managers and teams decided to settle or the draw at about 5.35pm! I can sort o see why we might, given recent lapses and Tuesday night's game - no idea why Pep did. I'd imagined some scores (and dreaded some!) wouldn't have put even someone else's money on a
0-0

City was much better last year and was in title race when we beat them, and somehow when we pull a draw last night it was an improvement? How does rhat work?

Absolute bollox

Trying to act as if you knew what would would happen like you have a magic third eye. Do we only win with Fred in the team now?

Truly hilarious

Both teams playing a formation with nobody in the box to capitalise on crosses.Dreadful to watch but keeps MU in the hunt for top 4

Obvs not brilliant but nowhere near as bad as being made out

if there had been just one goal with the same pattern of play, there’d be a totally different narrative. the winning team would be streetwise and the losers naive

Result and performance, average. Could been worse/better.

get a grip.

cue: “but we didn’t score “ from the usual mard-arses

...and there we have it... cafe wisdom

fu+k me.

Both sides didn't want to lose. I felt asleep by last 15'. Probably the most boring derby ever.
