Post-match discussion

Part unlucky, part shit with poor attitudes from a few players.

Oh and Rooney/Carrick can retire any day.

Right there with the match against Fulham a couple of seasons ago. Absolutely dreadful performance.

I am starting of getting tired of Van Gaal and his nonsense idiotic decisions. Rooney should never play for United again, but we all know that he's going to start every game. It is good that LVG seems to have understood that Carrick is finished. Memphis is a proof that there exist humans without brains. Fellaini is shit but he played as a striker for 30 minutes, while our only goal threat was again shifted in the left wing. Utterly wrong decisions.

One positive thing to take away from this was Pereiras performance, very encouraging stuff from the lad and we need to give him more gametime.

So, there's not much to see here folks!

Positives: We found out Depay doesn't belong in the starting line-up.
Negatives: Not many other players do either.

It beggars belief that these gifted men are paid a small fortune EVERY week to simply put a small ball into a reasonably large sized target and yet they find it impossible! Have to say that LvG must take some of the blame here but the players, almost to a man, should be ashamed!

I hope the press go to town on LvG and keep asking him about Rooney. I would be happy if he never pulled a United shirt on ever again.

I'm furious over this, for some reason I can't really explain. I hate losing at penalties. Maybe it's that.

What an absolute waste of an evening. Absolutely disgraceful display. There were some players on that pitch playing for us tonight who should never do so again, starting with Wayne Rooney. If Van Gaal persists with Rooney, he needs the sack. Middlesborough were absolutely awful, and we've played like that at home... I am lost for words. I feel cheated.

This isn't any Manchester United I recognise. Dreadful, dreadful stuff. If players don't get dropped from the squad after that, the manager has to go. Start with your captain, Van Gaal.

We need to take a long hard look at what we're doing. Our attack has been getting gradually worse and we're now at the point where we literally can't score to save our lives. Such a waste of a competition we had a decent chance of winning.

Quality attacking performance. Moved the ball crisply and with great invention. Controlled the game from start to finish and missed 3 penalties. Very unlucky not to score 7/8 in the end but we've all got our health. Let's take the positives and move on

This is a joke right? Martial creating space for himself and balls arrowed at Fellaini is great invention?

Everyone was shit. The players, the ref, the linesman, the commentator, the idiots in the studio ...

Actually, the match thread was pretty entertaining.

Initial reaction:
Annoying given how this was probably our strongest chance at a trophy this season having seen Chelsea and Arsenal fall yesterday. I know we still fancy ourselves in the FA Cup and the league and CL aren't out of sight but this offered the strongest probability.

On the game:
The game was poor and it was one of those days where the final pass was never looking like going right and any decent chance was squandered.

Summary:
It happens and while I'm not wanting to dismiss this out of hand entirely, let's put this into context, this sort of game is better off happening today and becoming a lesson to improve and put that performance right rather than in the Prem or CL.

I hope the press go to town on LvG and keep asking him about Rooney. I would be happy if he never pulled a United shirt on ever again.
Has a player ever lost his ability so quickly yet still maintained his position in the team?

Better chances? I'd rather the two we had in the last minute of injury time than anything they had all game.

And that is the problem, we had to wait until extra time to do anything meaningful. Our possession game is so predictable and easy to defend against. I'm not bothered with getting knocked out, what bothers me is a championship team can come to Old Trafford and defend fairly comfortably for the majority of the game.

The three who missed have won plenty in their careers.
Young has won one league title in his career (his only trophy) in a squad player role.

Rooney and Carrick yep, but both are finished. Neither of them has ever been a leader, but they somehow are our primary captains.

The best bit of the game was when Blind smashed it into his own net for no reason, spat me drink everywhere

I think LvG should start with "This is a ball ..." on the training pitch tomorrow. It might be too advanced for Rooney but the rest should pick up on it.

LVG's first priority is not to lose. He's a coward of a manager and that just doesn't fit at a club that's built its traditions on attacking football.

I can't stop laughing for some reason. It's just hilarious how bad we were - could not have gone any worse really. At least we didn't get injuries like Arsenal did. Winning.

Quality attacking performance. Moved the ball crisply and with great invention. Controlled the game from start to finish and missed 3 penalties. Very unlucky not to score 7/8 in the end but we've all got our health. Let's take the positives and move on

I didn't catch the game, but based off most of the comments, it sounds like you're taking the piss.

The penalties were an accurate reflection of our play. Couldn't hit a barn door. Very few of those that played tonight deserve to wear the red shirt again. Very few.
if we taken sideways penalties we'd have won that match

There's no polishing that turd of a performance, absolute rancid bag of ass juice. The most disappointing aspect is when I saw the front 4 I had high hopes of them really stepping up, Pereira and Lingard eventually played themselves into the game but it was underwhelming overall. Carrick and Rooney should hang their heads in shame, this is where "Experience" supposedly justifies carrying players that don't have the legs anymore and both were found wanting.

Against Palace I want Rooney, Carrick and Memphis missing from the matchsquad. I want Martial uptop as our No.9 and Mata, Perreira and Lingard all featuring with Schneiderlin, Herrera and BFS back in midfield.

Hardly the end of the world, but until we sort the Roooney issue, and get the wingers either playing well or replaced, then games like that will keep happening.

Positives DDG, Scneiderlin, Herrera, Mata, and Schweinsteiger are nice and fresh for Saturday.

Pathetic. Simply put. Only comfort is that we played a second string team so hopefully we get a reaction at Palace.

No intensity, until the 87th minute that is and even then it was intermittent.

It has also convinced me that LVG thinks Rooney is doing a good enough job, why else bring him on to change a game. Wilson wasn't great but there was a chance he might have grown in confidence as the game went on, just don't understand the logic behind his changes.

Also Rooney really does look shot. He was a bit better in midfield but he offers little - looks like those saying he's finished are right
