LC L League Cup 4th Round

Manchester United 0:0 Middlesbrough

Post-match discussion

This is on LVG for me for 2 reasons:

1. How cautious are you going to play against Boro at home? This is what happens.

2. What kind of attacking play is that? No clue how to go about creating chances. And he goes on to make it worse by wasting a sub on Rooney who just makes our already pathetic general play even worse.

If Rooney plays another game for United ever, I'll accept this club is going nowhere under LVG.

Decent - Pereira, Lingard, Martial, Fellaini
Poor - Memphis, Wilson, Rooney, Carrick, Mason

Rooney in midfield was worse than Rooney as striker. Herrera please.

Not one of them even looked remotely confident when they took the penalty. Perreira and Martial always look they are going to fall asleep anytime during a game. So can't judge their facial reactions.

They were United's better players tonight.

If he dares to put Rooney in midfield and drops Ander I will personally travel down to Carrington and strangle the manager with my bare hands.

Typical shite LC performance. Sluggish players returning from injury or out of form, with a couple of decent performances from Lingard and Pereira.

Exactly the sort of thing Fergie would serve up at this time of the year, only difference between then and now is the quality from the bench. Rooney should have been able to change the game, he should be the one to come on a drag us up a couple of levels. If anything we were worse with him on the pitch.

LvG pulled him from the CF position and hopefully now sees his time is up. It was obvious to everyone (even Rooney, looking at his face) that he would miss the pen.

The smoggies were as crap as us as well; that was no heroic victory for them. They were just slightly less shit.
Pretty much this. I think we've got to dip into the transfer market in January, right now we've only got one serious game changer (Martial, and maybe Herrera, given the energy he gives you). All our other supposed match winners are either still developing or woefully off form.

Contrary to those complaining about a lack of urgency going forward, I was crying out at times for us to stop rushing the ball forward, and to exert some control and run them around at times.

Lots of problems getting final balls right, something that so often happens in these squad games. So much foundering around Rooney when up front. Yet we were in position around their area to generate chances.

Some appalling decision-making and lack of control ruined some promising breaks.

Someone needs to give Mason a cactus enema.

After a certain point, I stopped caring about how awful Memphis was playing or how dreadful we are to watch. And I just laughed a lot at the Blind own goal and Romero forgetting to control the ball when it's coming back to him, and almost everything after that. Possibly the most entertaining match we've had all season, and also maybe the worst.

Is there a gif of the Blind own goal floating around?

I don't think we were "awful" but what do I know? There's always a massive over reaction every single time we lose a game of football. It was an open game, end to end at times and in the final minutes, we did have 2 clear cut chances to win it, we had 2 clear penalties not given, about 5 weak shots straight at the keeper. We were not terrible at all, Boro were just very well drilled, determined & fought until the end, they deserve a lot of credit. It went to penalties & our senior players, like much of the game, failed woefully.

I thought Lingard & Perreira gave very good account of themselves, Fellaini played well. I fear for Memphis, he's struggling to do the basics, such as bringing the ball under control. He can't pass & doesn't take on his man, his crossing is poor, he's basically offering nothing, I know he needs time to settle, but he's not showing anything worthy of perseverance right now. And Rooney was just Rooney, past his sell by date, now that Young is back, maybe LVG can drop him. I thought it was an entertaining game, very open, but we didn't win, which means, we were "awful" & it's the fault of the manager. I don't understand this logic at all.
Hear hear.

Wilson should not be subbed of vs boro unless he was injured. So we sub him off for a slower smaller player who form has dipped to historical levels. LVG was wrong there for sure
I would have subbed him off for martial and have him lead the line rather than Rooney.

Ashley Young taking a penalty? He's missed his last 5 or 6 ffs
Wayne Rooney....A disgrace. Big ego, taking the armband at HT. A Steven Gerrard move if ever there was one. A shambles.

The whole thing, a shambles! I could go on but, there'll be others here who'll say it better than me

Btw, @bosnian_red @Samid @Pexbo .....Wish I had put a bet on now :D
Haha. You'd think we can score at home... And tbf we created loads of chances in extra time and a decent amount in the second half (didn't see the first half though). Woeful finishing though, multiple dreadful performances... Smalling, the u21 players (martial, pereira, lingard... All apart from memphis) were the only good points of the game.

Of course it is going to be Chris Smalling who is going to come out for the interview. Bloody knew Rooney would hide. He's the club captain, he missed a penalty. He should face the music.

I was talking about the jelousy and clamouring for the liverpool manager. It's boring already. I can't see it happening, but God forbid if Klopp has any real success then I swear a huge chunk of our posters will be over at RAWK before you know it.

Hopefully your not aiming that at me?

I was merely showing the difference in manager, I hate the fact LVG shows feck all passion. Watched him tonight trying to encourage Martial, it was depressing stuff. Only minutes earlier I had seen Klopp cuddling his players on the pitch, when Liverpool scored Klopp was kicking the ball himself into the net.

LVG is void of all passion and I have no faith he can man manage the players.

If Jose got the chop tommorow I would jump at the chance to replace LVG with him.

LVG seems to have the knack of getting world class players and turning them to shyte or drop them if they fail to play to his shyte philosophy.

I'm absolutely fuming.

We were gutless, we were useless.

We couldn't pass the ball, we showed no penetration, we were lucky to get to extra time, then we were lucky to get to penalties. In fact we were tactically outplayed by Middlesbrough who thoroughly deserved to go through.

Then there were the penalties. 3 out of 4 missed! Pathetic. I am so fecking angry at our arrogance tonight and the ultimate disgusting display. Lee Mason is an idiot, but for the 2 pens he should have given (how he missed the 2nd one I will never know) he also should have sent Lingard off early doors IMO.

Re think LVG because performances like that are beyond fecking unacceptable.

Disgusted.

I don't get the meltdown. Some laughable overreactions on here and some people are even calling for Van Gaal's head  Yes, we haven't won a trophy in two years, but it's only the League Cup.

The whole point was giving some play time to players like Lingard, Romero, Pereira, Fellaini, Carrick (who's been shit this season and is rightly benched) and Wilson. Rooney wasn't good when he came on and once again proved that he should no longer lead the line for us. Van Gaal putting Martial up top in extra time is hopefully a sign that he'd be back up front for us against Palace. He wasn't very good on the left after he came on, but then again the ball barely came near him. When he went up front in extra time, he showed why he should be playing there for us. Had two great chances and was unlucky not to score. Should have had a penalty as well.

I'm still struggling to explain to myself how the feck did Blind manage to score an own goal after Kike's effort. What the feck was that?!

Has anyone actually enjoyed a game of football under LVG?

For the right reasons!

All it proved that some of our first team squad are not up to it. That is a big worry. Carrick, finished. Rooney, finished. Fellaini, not good enough. Memphis, not good enough. Excuses in press conference from LvG, same excuses.

But Rooney is a precious little flower who needs to be tended to, or he'll end up angry and confused again.

No Schweinsteiger, Schneiderlin or Herrera. No energy or imagination in midfield.

Perreira was ok and managed to score his penalty. Please let Smalling stay fit for the rest of the season.

Otherwise, that was gash. We've let a team of lumpen huddies come to OT and outplay us. There are no positives.

Obviously some games were enjoyable, like that run last season where we beat Spurs, Liverpool and City with some good football. Also Liverpool and Everton this season. But the majority of our games are pretty dull and unenjoyable.

Weird game, we had enough chances in the end to win it. Bad luck from Martial, Lingard and Fellaini not to score at least one.

I’m worried about Carrick, I have no idea who to pair him with so that the midfield can work. Today he was left alone and he didn’t handle it, to put it mildly.

Fellaini was pretty good, but I’m not sure him roaming around was the best move. As I said earlier, Carrick was left alone. He probably wouldn’t help him in the middle anyway to be honest. This was the only mistake from van Gaal today.

No comment on Memphis. Lingard was pretty decent but he needs to do better.

I don’t think Rooney played that bad today, although it wasn’t anything close to “good” either. Hopefully shifting him to midfield is a sign of changes.

Martial and Pereira were good, want to see more of them.

We’re going to face a lot of teams like Middlesbrough, there’s not much time to find a way to break down teams that park the bus.

What I’d like to see is: Schneiderlin – Schweinsteiger Herrera midfield behind Young, Martial and Mata in attack. I think this will be enough. Rooney and especially Memphis need to stay out of the side for a while.

I dont get this whole "Its only the league cup". We havent won a trophy since Fergie left, this was a great chance, and we all saw how the LC win in 2006 was a boost esp to the younger players.

Its a missed opportunity imo.
