Post-match discussion

On a positive note, it was great to see Pereira and Lingard get a game, I thought both took their chance and looked very good. Hopefully they continue to improve and get more game time over the rest of the season.

I could understand giving Young some needed game time, but I was surprised it was for Rojo rather than the generally poor Memphis

Might be just me but I think Rojo is rather poor when it comes to overlapping and his attacking play in general.

Part of the problem with Depay is his tendency to run into trouble, whether that's because of poor decision making or a lack of support could be debated, but I think bringing Young in was to provide that option.

Depay is suffering, at least in part, due to Shaw being out, he looked much better when he had Shaw in support earlier in the season.

I may be wrong, but I have a feeling that LVG, Jose and Arsene are rather relieved to be out of it.......

It's no disaster to be out of it. The performance was. But our squad is too thin to fight on all fronts. We are super reliant on some core players without whom we'd be nowhere near where we are in the league.

stand up Chris Smalling, Anthony Martial and David de Gea.

I don't care we loss this game. I never care about this Cup.
there is more to the pie than this simple outlook though.

- Another shocking Rooney performance, perhaps his worst yet. Getting worse by the game
- Another woefully inept attacking performance where we look years away from scoring.
- Another game where very small clubs outwit and outfought the Club and the manager
- Another no show from Van Gaal on the touch line, just sits writing all game. No touchline Orders or appearances
- Another recent defensive mess. We didnt concede but its a miracle we didnt, we need to go back to how assured we have been in recent times. Started to be really shaky.

Doesnt matter whether this is against Boro in a lesser cup comp, or against Swansea in the Premier league. The issues are the same regardless of the situation.

It's not the cup, but it was a brilliant chance of a trophy. Do you think City won't rub it in when they waltz off with it. It was the realisation that some players last night are not good enough and Rooneys form has dropped off a cliff.

I'm pretty sure none of the top Prem sides will attempt to "rub it in" if they win the Carling/Milk/Rumbelows rascal. Seriously, good luck with that. Its a nice to have at best

It's a meaningless cup......when you're lifting the premier league trophy, or the FA cup, or the Champions League.
But otherwise, it's a piece of silverware that you otherwise wouldn't have. A sign of some success.
It's a fairly big deal for a side scraping 'top 4' and trying to make a mark on the season.

It looked like LVG went straight down the tunnel after the final whistle. Any reports of (a fully deserved) flying boot or hair dryer?

surely the players have to take the majority of the blame for last nights pathetic defeat?

Pre match, most fans wanted a youthful team with fringe players getting game time. I though LVG struck the perfect balance: an experienced defence and central midfield laced with youthful attacking flair.

But our attacking performance in the first half was non existent and we we're very profligate and wasteful in front of goal late in the 2nd half. We should easily have scored 2 or 3 goals in this match, there were chances aplenty. But the finishing was simply not good enough, and in the end, we got bitten in the bum, as normally happens when a team is so wasteful. Those misses are not LVG's fault.

I think he sent out a side easily good enough to win, but the players let him done. Especially Wilson, Depay, Carrick and Rooney who were all very poor.

It was almost as if Carrick stepped up to take the penalty thinking "feck these night matches" and skied it. Had it been an FA Cup tie, I would have been really pissed off but the League Cup is a joke and not worth taking seriously.

It doesn't really matter. Not our strongest squad, we are in heavy schedule with far more important games ahead, and we don't have to win this competition. We never really wanted to win it anyway, not now, not in the past, and not in the future. In the end, nobody cares.

Out of curiosity, do the people who watched the game at Old Traffprd have a different perspective to those of us who saw it on,say, Romanian television via Kodi? You don't really get any sense of movement off the ball that way. Were the OT faithful as disgusted as the armchair mob?

Against City I certainly wasn't.

Against City I certainly wasn't.

City I can see - that seemed like a very tactical game even on TV. Borough seemed to be just everyone piling onto Rooney. Did he seem so bad in person?

Well that was a right shower, disappointed to go out as I felt we may have had a chance in the competition as Chelsea and Arsenal both got knocked out.

The match could've easily been decided before penalties with the amount of chances we wasted and also the blatent handball from the Boro player.

Got chance to watch second half there. Looked a bit leaky defensively without schmidfield screening back 4, but I thought we were okay otherwise. Didnd't control the game but had plenty of attacks. Depay disappointing but felli, lingard and periera looked okay

Really hope it happens for lingard he has been so unlucky.

Could have won 5-0 if we had some confidence

Haven't seen any of it but I'm annoyed because this was a good shot at a trophy. We should be taking what we can get at this point.
