Post-match discussion

Pathetic really, that's the easiest game we have left this season, up against an injury hit side with nothing to play for, a comedy defence which did all it could to try and help us win the game, a non existent midfield and a wasteful striker, yet with all those things we still struggle and slowly pass our way through the game.
Managed to capitalise on one of the 25 mistakes that Newcastle defence made today, well done lads.

Only positives, Rooney performance or shall I just say 'movement' will see an end to the Falcao and Van Persie days. De Gea and Young doing well again too.

Maybe not but they'd have probably bagged his chances in the first half.

Tough slog of a game. Thought we controlled it for the main but Christ did we give them far too many chances. Fellaini was poor. Herrera too. Di Maria is suffering badly and what Falcao must be thinking, God only knows.

Huge result from a game that should have been a formality in truth. Thank god we keep the pace with the other winners tonight.

On 250k a week, he's probably thinking what on earth has he done to be rewarded so richly for so little output

The result is great but surely the alarm bells are still ringing at full volume.
We are so lucky not to lose that, thanks to the ref, De Gea, and Newcastle capitulating in the last minute.
All this against a shit Newcastle team with nothing to play for.

Don't know what people are moaning about. It's a better performance than last week, away from home, and we mostly controlled the game. I think we are still not finding the final ball, but we're looking better in the last third.

It wasn't that bad, not briliant either, but deserved win overall. Still worries me that in the end it was a lucky win and it was still important that Dave did some great saves again.

Rooney and the Fellaini/Young chances are ones you can't miss.

I think we will improve with carrick back . We're never the same team without him .
Look at the points with him and without this season .

It's clear this is how Van Gaal wants us to play. And to be fair, we had quite a number of chances to score. Di Maria (and Januzaj later) seemed like the only one given freedom to try the risky stuff. If only he wasn't so horribly off form.

I've been critical of Rooney these past couple of years, but fair play to him for that goal.

Ash and grab! :D

Another average performance with some bright moments from Rooney and another savior job from Big Dave. I let out a primal scream when we scored, as much relief as anything. Absolutely vital 3 points.

We were by miles the better team, had complete control, Fellaini, Rooney and Young all missed sitters. That could easily have been 4-0. Easily. People still moaning though. It wasn't perfect, but it was a hell of a lot better.

I really liked the 4-3-3 tbh. Hope we stick with it.

Haha yeah there is that! He may quite like it here after all.

I thought in general the field play was better than we have seen this season. The goal was a genius moment by Rooney causing panic in the defense. Van Gaal using a bit of Fergie time. I am happy with the win today for more than just the score.

Is it me or did Giggsy not look too impressed with Van Gaal when celebrating the goal. Very stoney faced. Something not right there.
Yep, what was that about? He looked like a right miserable cnut.

Did he have a bet with LvG that we'd lose or something?

First half was good I though, better than anything we've seen in a long time

We played well tonight, bossed possession and created chances. They should have had a pen but then Cisse should have been sent off for aiming a kick at Evans. They had some good chances themselves but that'll always happen when you go away from home. One of our better away performances and dare I say one of our better performances in general. Thought the Di Maria substitution was stupid as he'd just got himself into the game but then maybe if he didn't go off, Young might have. Anyway lucky in the goal but could have quite easily had 4 or 5 on another night, I'm happy with tonight, slowly but surely we look like we're improving.

Please can we stop using the word lucky? We were the architect of our own "near" failure here. Newcastle were beyond poor but what did we do, we just passed it around casually like nothing was at stake. The goal was not luck in anyway or form, as it was a result of one moment of real urgency by our captain, something we lacked all game.

Whatever the specifics, we deserved to win that, and did.

Bingo.

As I said in the match day thread when Krul saved Those two shots off the line, if that was Newcastle we'd be calling ourselves very lucky.

3 points. That's nice. Vital. Starting line up was fine. Subs were mostly ok. Players were fine. Evans should be a bit embarrassed. Just happy with a win.

What fecking game were you watching?

Id hate to listen to you when we actually lose.

Say what you like, but put any other keeper other than DDG in our goal, and we'd be leaving with 0 points.

Here are the facts:

- We scored from a Newcastle mistake
- Newcastle had the better chances, and had a genuine penalty appeal denied
- Our 'star players' other than Rooney failed to turn up once again

Possession is all good and all, but we do feck all with it. And when we do need it, like at the end of the game when we're defending a 1-0 lead, we can't seem to keep it and the players shit themselves.

I struggle to think of more than a handful of performances this season where I can say we looked comfortable for the 90 minutes and played well for the duration of the game.

We did look terrible but I'd still say it was deserved.

We should have really put it away in the first half, this Newcastle side is dreadful.

Deserved victory, but boy, we barely managed to win.

De Gea is a fantastic keeper. Van Gaal has the ability of completely killing our game with his subs. Despite that Di Maria was losing the ball quite often, every action was going through him and he had just created 2 chances in the last 2 minutes. No idea why he was subbed while on the end it was a complete madness to send Carrick instead of Falcao.

Because he was shit all game, one good cross to Rooney doesn't change that.

I don't get what LVG is trying to get with Fellaini. The commentators made a good point just before he was subbed, not knowing what he is being used for - striker or mid? He puts a good shift as a mid, keeping possession & helping cycle it, but I'd rather see him used as a striker, TBH. Then you replace him with Mata, not exactly like for like, and it wasn't like we weren't passing it well already. Just not putting in the mixer enough or taking more risks.

Yep, what was that about? He looked like a right miserable cnut.

Did he have a bet with LvG that we'd lose or something?

I think it's a bit more serious than that. I don't they're getting along...

Very lucky to get any points

Lucky to score like we did, sure, but then using the same logic we were unlucky to miss the several chances we did, and have a good goal wrongly flagged offside.

Newcastle certainly weren't deserving of anything. If it had ended in a draw, they'd have been significantly "luckier" to get any points.

We've been lucky to get points countless times this season, and this was far closer to "earning" it than many of them.

Anyone got a gif of LvG screaming in Giggs face after the goal in celebration but Giggs blanking him?

Utterly undeserved. They had the best chances, and should have had a penalty. Ugly as feck goal. Bothered.

Newcastle were fecking poison. Just terrible. If we didn't win that, we wouldn't have deserved top 4.

Agree except for the bold bit. Rooney missed a one v one with the keeper, Young had an open net, AdM took ages to shoot in the opening minutes, etc. They certainly had a gilt-edged chance with Cisse on the break (inexcusable giveaway by Herrera), but, regardless of how labored and average we were, the better openings came our way. Particularly in the first half, we had more chances to score tonight than we often create.

Hard to feel encouraged about the performance (again), but I'll take the 3 points and run, at this stage.
