Post-match discussion

Sat, 06 October 2018

I'll have a bet that Mourinho did not plan the comeback in his tactical briefing over the last few days.

You know that the next match will be exactly the same and the match after, this time we got out of jail.
I'm not having a go at the players and support them wholeheartedly but we need a change and quickly.
We've had too many comebacks in 2018 for the manager not to be given any credit.

You can't have it both ways. The same players were terrible in the first half, there is no excuse for not being able (or not being bothered) to do the basics.

Those players were nowhere near the worst in the first half. Why did we look so bad in the first half and why did we look so much better in the last 25 minutes.
You can't have it both ways either.

Ok, have that bet. How will you know that?
Because it's the same every week. We are always reactive and not proactive until something goes wrong.

Jose has to try and get a settled team. Dalot and Young need to fight it out for right back as Valencia has zero attacking threat.

Smalling deserves to start every game as does Shaw.

Martial is now officially in some decent form and needs to stay in the team on the left wing. Fellaini is probably our most effective midfielder so far this season.

De Gea
Young/Dalot Smalling Bailly/Rojo Shaw
Matic
Fellaini Pogba
Mata/Sanchez Lukaku Martial
Romero
Lindelof
Fred (to be rotated with Fellaini)
Lingard
Rashford

Young and Matic have to come out of the team - awful show by both today

I only watched the second half, and to be honest, I just wanted to see who was playing for the team and who wasn't.
I was expecting Pogba and Martial not to play to their best but pleasantly surprised and proud to see the whole team playing like the old manchester united with EFFORT and passion. It just shows, what they can do if playing as a team.
Cynically, I would suggest that now the shit has really hit the fan, and the old boys, giggs, neville etc and most supporters are clearly turning to support [the manager] Mourino, the dissenters in the team are starting to realise that playing for the team is more important than playing for the manager. Time will tell whether, this is just a one off because the dissenters realised that they have been found out, Keane's 'crybabies' remark wont have gone down well with them.
I really hope Mourino softens his acerbic approach towards the players and the dissenters grow up and start playing for the club. Of course Woodward will have realised he is not the football commander he thinks he is and hopefully he and Mourino between them will chose wisely to entice real class players here. This will be difficult unless the club's infrastructure improves to the level it should be.
I would like to see Woodward talking with the likes of Neville and Giggs as to how the club should move forward if they are not already talking. There is no reason why Man Utd can't be harmonious if the top management utilise the facilities available to them.
If Pogba, who played well today, still wants to play for anyone else then let him go in January and equallly let Mourino go if his brand of football doesn't improve.

We just look so much better when we throw caution to the wind and commit men forward. Some much needed win that.

Great performance and loved our team committment in 2nd half but still want Jose gone as his tactics along with team selection were not upto the mark . The attacking intent showed by the team in 2nd half showed exactly why Jose will not take us forward since he only allows his important players the freedom to express their attacking prowess when the team is chasing a game .

Jose is mainly responsible for many of our poor results this season - what with the weird player selections and moaning, but I don't understand how people can still think that he did not do a great job today. I don't see how it was his fault that Young, Matic and Bailly were all sleeping on the Newcastle goals. That had nothing to do with tactics but with their own levels of alertness and ability. I don't see how it was also his fault that Matic and Rashford missed sitters before Mata scored.
The fact we play so defensively and have so little attacking threat (both in terms of numbers and movement) enables our opposition to throw people forward and really attack us. They know they have very little to fear from us. It's not a co-incidence that the more defensive we've played this season the more goals we are conceding.

As such, playing both Matic and McTominay at home against Newcastle was ridiculous. That was on Jose. Fair play to him he went for it in the second half and got the result, and hopefully he'll take a bit more of that attitude in the future (if he stays).

At least the match going fans get behind the team and the manager.

Most of you wouldn’t stick 5 minutes inside old Trafford if you acted like you do on here.
How do you know this? How many people did you ask or talk to?

I got in late from having a tattoo and this was much more painful. I taped it, avoiding all media outlets etc but I didn’t celebrate one goal, don’t get me wrong the result was fantastic but there’s something that has gone beyond the pale for me.

The only positive I can garner from this feeling is it was the same feeling I had when Ferguson was 4 years in and I was so wrong then.

Just wish we’d start matches in the first minute as we did from the 46th. That was a second half blood and thunder display from a team supposedly not playing for the manager. Starting X1 was shocking though, so he had to do something to fix it. Could be a PR disaster to fire him now - unless we already have a very good candidate lined up, which I doubt.

There is no way young should be anywhere near the first team now apart from the cross for the winner he was putrid Dalot should be starting so absolutely no fighting it out at all.

Matic was poor again tonight and needs to be given a few games on the bench.
Martial was pish tonight as well for first 55 mins or so done much better when he decided to beat a few players and we started to play with pace but to say he is in decent form is stretching it completely but I would keep him in the side to try and get him some confidence I think a decent run in the side and we will see the proper martial taking on players and terrorising defenses.
Lukaku needs to be benched too and I'd stick Sanchez up front to change things up a bit we are absolutely screwed in so far as we do not have a target man to replace Lukaku (no not fellaini)
My team for the next game (baring in mind we are goosed with the centre backs as they are as bad as each other)

De Gea
Dalot Smalling Lindelof/Rojo (when fit) Shaw
Fred
Fellaini Pogba
Mata Sanchez Martial

Where did I try turn him into a laughing stock. People can have opinions all they want but if you're actively sad at us winning a game from 2-0 down, then I feel bad for you.

Also, for what it's worth, I didn't realise the first two quotes were from the same guy when I added it to multi-quote. Didn't intentionally single him out.

:)

I assumed you singled him out knowingly quoting all his posts hence my perception was you were treating his opinions as a joke. Fair enough if you didn't.

A classic comeback, felt just like the Fergie days.

We don't set out to attack either.
Yeah but if you're telling me Jose isn't constantly thinking about how to react to our many defensive lapses then I have to disagree with you there.
The early sub has always been a Jose hallmark. Later Sir Alex used to sub in a winger into the FB position to overload the wings in much the same manner .

It was nice to see these players actually show a bit of backbone for a change, during the 2nd half.

Still haven't changed my opinion that Mourinho has to go. That first half was shocking against a side that can't buy a win. If we hand out two goal starts in our upcoming games, we aren't coming back.

Feeling ever more strongly in my preference of keeping Pogba over Mou, if that was ever even really a dilemma.

I don't think the winning of the game proves much or otherwise because of how 'not terribly good' Newcastle are. But in the last 20 minutes there was some great football by us.

I'd be a bit concerned about setting up like that vs. anyone any good, mind. And the first 45mins was really very poor.

I still don't know how Jose (or whether anyone can) turns it around to get to the level which will make the majority of us 'happy.'

There's still structural/quality issues in key areas & Woodward is still a clueless tosser except for selling tractors in high volumes.

I expect them to wait & see (trying to get to the end of the season, in other words)

We ended the game like this:

DDG
Smalling
Matic Pogba
Young Fellaini Mata Shaw
Lukaku Sanchez Martial

Perhaps we can work around this in the future:

DDG
Smalling Bailly
Pogba
Dalot Fred Mata Shaw
Martial
Lukaku Sanchez

When you think of how shite the last 5 years have generally been it was still surreal to sit there and see us 2-0 down in 10 minutes at home to Newcastle. Just incredible to see the mess we are in.

Now the 2nd half was much more like it especially the last 20 minutes. I'm not proclaiming it as us turning a corner or thinking things will be fine now because ultimately I think we're still in a mess but we should just enjoy the win.

It's been a terrible season so a comeback like that is lovely.

By the way how fecking handy is Mata? Gets a lot of flak on here sometimes but it just seems like when we are having a rough time he always comes up with something. He was definitely one of the more level headed ones out there when he came on! Bravo Juan!!

A win's a win but this is just another false dawn and prolonging the inevitable. Was good to see the lads showing some fight for once. However, we all know what comes next.

Chelsea (A) - Jose parks the bus and we get our arses handed to us, 3-0 or 4-1.

Juventus (H) - Jose parks the bus and we lose at home, 0-2.

Everton (H) - with his job on the line, Jose parks the bus but we squeak a narrow win, 2-1.

Rinse and repeat all season long until top 4 is impossible.

Fantastic end to the game. Didn't see that response coming in a million years at half time. Exhilarating stuff. Need more of that. Can't get too excited though as clear issues exist in this team, and clearly there are questions to be answered over the next few weeks. Hopefully we see Martial and Alexis after their goals. Not sure how Bailly can recover from this.

Our defence was terrible in the first half but we're playing at home against the second bottom team who had scored one away goal this season who had us under pressure. We should be taking the game by the scruff of the neck at home and scaring Newcastle to death. We never do that.

So his tactics have gone out the window by the 10th minute and out fought and out thought by a poor team.
Furthermore he leaves McTominay on at CB when he doesn't know how to play there and nearly costs us two or three times because of that inexperience and his positioning. Yes Bailly and Young were having a nightmare but Mourinho actually got lucky it wasn't worse by the end of the first half.
Sorry but this is not Mourinho , the master tactician.

a very enjoyable last 25 mins

before that is was very poor though

our defending in the first ten was atrocious and a better team would have capitalized later in the game

Bailly terrible, Matic and McTominay are not CBs - Mourinho's decisions were odd

still great to get the win but I think this is nothing more than a win. I can't see a change in our attacking attitude or the quality of our play - too many false dawns

Who knew that our most gifted players like Martial, Pogba and Mata can string a pass or two. Loved their little one-two passes in the second half.

Matic should take a pay cut for the next few weeks. He's been horrific for some time now. I'm speechless.

Some people say what is the 'United way'. For me it's flooding the opposition penalty box with attacking players. Atleast 5 players. This is what we saw in the last end of the second half. This is what we need to see more of. The more bodies in there the more chance of scoring.

Did Mourinho tell the team not to run, not to track runners, not to complete simple passes, not to be able to control a ball in the first half? These are the best paid players in the league, they should be going out to prove why every minute of the game.

Yes, I really enjoyed the Barcelonesque type passing on the left and that includes Shaw, who thankfully is showing us how good he is. Really impressed with Pogba in the second half, he didnt dilly dally on the ball and got us going forwards in good time.

We still have issues
Im still not sure on Jose
There is no system
Jose still throwing people under buses
Over reliance on De Geaa over last few years is clear
Aging right backs
Cant take decent corners

BUT - for tonight at least, I am happy!!!!!!!!

Not so long ago, many of the people now praising Pogba were the same ones that wanting him to be moved on come summer.

There was one guy who recommended we should sell Pogba and break the bank to get Neves...

Shame we have to go 2-0 down to actually play attacking football the way we should be playing.
