CL D Champions League Group B

Manchester United 0:0 PSV Eindhoven

Post-match discussion

Wed, 25 November 2015

Such a boring game, I wish I'd watched The Apprentice and Peep Show instead. There was no urgency at all in our play considering we could've gone through with a win and now we face an uphill struggle.

For United to progress..

- If PSV win next match, then we need to win vs Wolfsburg to qualify.
- If PSV draw next match, then we need to draw vs Wolfsburg to qualify based on the H2H tiebreakers that would see PSV qualify if we lose. A win vs Wolfsburg tops the group.
- If PSV lose next match, then we qualify no matter what but need to win to top the group.

There is zero chance that we win in Wolfsburg, we won't even set up to win the game, we will set up for 0-0. Even if PSV are winning 3-0 we will still pass the ball around pointlessly to avoid conceding and be happy with 0-0.

But if we stuck a chance away tonight we'd be a whole different prospect in here....

Not really the point tbh. If we'd created a good number of chances tonight and still failed to score then the mood on here would be different. We only had two or three clear openings which just isn't good enough and one of those was because of a fluky bounce. You could kind of accept it if we'd gone 1-0 up from one of those chances and did feck all to see the game out. As it was we did feck all when time was running out.

Jesus Christ you lot remind me of Keano when we went out of the CL because Rooney and Ronaldo are not good enough. Lingard was our best player in the first half. Is keeping Mata on the bench. Depay's goals qualified us to the CL proper. Martial is insanely good for 19. We have the best Defence in the PL and we are missing players, had players returning and because of injuries havent been able to rotate much of late. If you can't Beat Wolfsburg can you progress to the latter stages anyway in this competition......hard game but thats exactly what you expect in the comp!
Agree with most of what you say, but the only first teamers we are really missing is Shaw, all the others have yet to establish themselves as first 11.
Reality is that after 55 mins or there abouts the front stopped running, midfield had no where to pass. Add to that lack of composure from some players resulted in missed chances and a bit of goofball from the back.
Bad day at office, soon to be corrected on Saturday.

Yeah we have young players up top and thats what you get. They learn in our team. You think Best never missed chances and we dropped points? You think even an experienced RVN didnt miss chances and the same happened?

Lvg just said that the second half was worse than bad and that he was dissapointed in the midfield which he adressed during half time but it's easy to talk about substitution after the game... something about looking in a cow's arse

Herrera could well have come on as could carrick as Bastian has played alot!

Regretting the choice I made when presented with the pop up on my Sky box telling me that if I wanted to make the scheduled recording of Ultimate Airport Dubai I'd have to turn over.

Oh and PSV won't lose at home to disinterested CSKA. So we are basically gone, should prepare for Europa now and I hope we treat this seriously.

Yet the changes he made worsened the situation. Having Carrick and Herrera out did not give him great options, but to leave Mata on the bench that long was nuts.

You're an unusual bloke.

He needs to win something, so if god forbid we do land in the Europa League he better as you say take it seriously.

There's a league to be won. The top dogs in it are all nothing teams compared to the standard of Europe, so there is hope.

So LVG very honest.

First half biggest problem is midfield not supporting the attackers, goes back to comments about not attacking as a team.

Second half players afraid to play and could not handle the formation change of PSV.

All in all he is not a happy bunny.

players afraid to play? They need to live in the real world. We fecked up in the league cup and we've thrown a great position away because we're cowards apparently.

Couldn't give a toss about the Europa league, play the youngsters and get knocked out quickly and concentrate on the league position.
Less games for us to suffer through watching as well, pro bono.

I think our players must be too tired, it's the only reason I can think of for the way we looked towards the end of the game. We had most of the ball in that game and yet they looked so much more energetic at the end than we did, it doesn't make sense. First half was decent, we had the chances to win the game and failed to take them (again). I don't see why we can't beat Wolfsburg, we need to be better but we can be.

Memphis looks another Rooney, too slow/laboured and pedestrian all the time. I can understand he may not be ready to take the league by storm due to the physical demands but it's not as if he even has 10-15minutes spells of looking excellent and then fades.

We completely lost control of that game once Schweinsteiger went off and Rooney went into MF.

United will qualify. You read it here. (Predicted a draw tonight 1-1) ... well 0 - 0 whatever....

We created enough to win and created good enough chances you expect to put away if you are to go far in this comp. Not about creating another 5 of those its about those young players getting better at putting these great chances away regardless. They will find once they do they are presented with similar as the game changes as a result!

Well we did see it, Schneiderlin and Smalling panicked like feck because the front stopped moving. Fellani was afraid to run, pass, head and Rojo and Blind started to hang on to the ball for too long.

Because a team that thinks like that deserves anything in the CL.

Even Moyes did a better job in UCL and he had inferior squad .

Right, "we're in rebuilding phase" people say

I was responding to some fella that thought finishing 2nd in the Group would suck.
I simply responded by saying that i thought most United fans would take 2nd right now.
So i really have no idea why you are directing this post at me.

If I'm not mistaken, CSKA can still make it into Europa League if they beat PSV. If they are interested in this competition, they'll totally go for it in Eindhoven.

He said that as well but it's easy to say that after the game (his words) he said that everyone can look in a cow's arse whatever that's supposed to mean. Lvg's substitution are hardly ever inspiring, you'd think he'd learn but apparently not. Mata hasnt been great recently but definitly shouldve been bought on early because he might pop up with a goal or assist more so than the other players.

Apologies.....the problem I have is I would much rather the players had to win and thats it.....never a good thing thinking otherwise!

A gutless and clueless performance verging on embarrassing.

We have virtually no one prepared to run at and commit the opposition. We play everything in front of our opponent and just continually hit a brick wall. It's not just from wide that we need to beat players, I actually think it's the midfielders that need to get beyond their midfielders by quite simply carrying the ball past them and getting in the situation whereby we out number them in the final third.

Both the matches in round 6 will probably end in draws and we go through.
But if not, there's no reason we can't beat Wolfsburg, PSV still have to win if we don't lose and CSKA still have a chance to get in the Europa League with a victory.
Bad day at the office but not over yet

Considering the game ended 0-0 that's not really saying much at all

The biggest thing that annoys me is people saying we need this player and that player, the squad that was assembled tonight was to a man better than theirs bar none, that performance came from the manager, it was atrocious, people leaving the stadium on 80 mins, wtf, that will not go unnoticed amongst the hierarchy, honestly it was that bad I cannot believe we didn't lose. It is time to start sounding out a new manager, that was quiet simply unacceptable given what was at stake, and tbh, it is not a new phenomenon under him.
