CL D Champions League Round of 16 1st Leg

Sevilla 0:0 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

Absolutely shit and it seems to be the same every week now. The tactics are shit, the players look scared to attack.

You could add Ronaldo and Messi to this team and we’d still struggle because we do nothing on the ball but smash it upfield.

Every single United fan would like to see a more adventuros approach.

But, Mourinho is our manager, and we all knew what to expect before the game started. If we win the second leg, we know what to expect in the next away game also. The players are limited by the tactical approach. But that is Mourinho's philosophy.

I'm trying to convince myself that Mourinho had half a thought on sundays match.

Very similar to the Liverpool away performance which Jose was slated for getting a point even though everyone else has got a thumping there.

When we opened up against Spurs we got spanked and folks wanted us to shore up.

We do it away in European cup and gets slated again. Can’t win.

One risk is the lack of away goals that could haunt us.

You can defend well, be compact but still have a cohesive attack. If DDG didn't make that crazy save we would've lost. Its obvious that we have lost the spark we had early season.

Why are we so bad at scoring goals? Doesn't matter who we buy.

Because it’s OT. You know, usually teams prefer playing at home?

Well yes of course we're favourites at home but were only a key decision or a mistake from conceding and the way we've been attacking it's entirely possible we may end up drawing at OT. It's not cut and dry.

A profhessional performance. Some may not like the fact that Jose has given Seville too much respect despite them having the 3rd best home record in La Liga.
Despite the rose-tinted glasses, but Fergie has done this many times especially after the 2000s. Get a pragmatic result in the 1st leg and then beat teams at OT.

More worryingly for me is how much better we looked once Alexis was subbed. Better flow, passing and basically, the players knew where everyone was going to be.
Jose will need the summer to figure out how to integrate Alexis into the attack.
A lovely, shiny, sensible post. Like a cherry in a pile of cowshit. What did people expect? All out attack? This is a strong, fit, forceful side. Nil-nil is alright. We just want to get through this. We will pressure them at OT; they will concede. All to play for. Also: Pogba needed that game time; will only improve. I am reasonably optimistic about the next two matches.

I dont think were actually that good at sitting back and defending tbh.
We dont look like a Juventus. We don't look canny or pragmatic or that hard to get past.
We dont look that dangerous when we do get the ball.
It looks too feckless and hapless to be something opponents would be worried about.
There was once I was genuinely worried they were gonna score and that was the first half with that worldy save.

The days of 0-0 being a good score in an away leg are long, long gone.
Last team to have lost a Champions League tie after drawing the first leg 0-0 away from home was Chelsea in 2014. Since then Bayern, Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid (twice) all progressed after drawing 0-0 away from home in the first leg.

I hope to never see Sanchez and Mata as a wing duo again, just too slow and plodding. Sanchez isn't the slowest but he isn't lightning either.

Jesus i never thought i'd see the day Manchester United had no proper wingers. But the last few years have been brutal in that regard.

We play them at OT after Liverpool game. I hope we won't be scarred from that game.

Spurs we were awful and lost, Huddersfield awful but somehow came out woth a 2 0 win, awful in the Newcastle defeat, dominated in the fa cup win against Huddersfield but somehow won and today awful. 5 goals in 5 games is a terrible return and this has been since we signed Sanchez. Accommodating him for the left flank has been a nightmare especially as martial was in such great form. His performances do not represent someone who earns 500k a week. Is this down to jose? Most probably. The amount of shots we had on goal has dropped massively in last few months, possession gone down and team have more confidence to attack us. If the team are genuninelly happy with this draw then they really should not be at united. I cannot think of one indispensable player (bar de gea) we have. If happily swap the whole team. Something is not right at the moment, We are so negative. Jose is notorious for going super defensive in the second half of the season. I think his tactics have been found out and he has run out of ideas. I've previously said I wouldn't want poch, i take that back and would consider him at any cost! I have zero hope for a win against Chelsea. We will get dominated, have 4 shots and grind a bore draw. This is not football anymore, this is pain!

Sanchez plays against our tide. He doesn’t quite understand how to play in our team

Fairly certain they will score at OT - making us needing at least 2 goals and therefore making this game look like a very wasted opportunity to put the game to bed in the 1st leg, like other teams I won’t mention have managed to do.

This first leg away tie mentally of battling out a 0.0 is just stupid we’ve got 90+ million pound players for god sakes we should be coming away with a win and easily.

People massively over-rate the threat of away goals. We’ll beat them at home. Our home record is excellent.
Yeah I’m with you. Of course there’s a chance we’ll do 1-1/2-2 or lose, but this is far from being a bad result. Actually, it’s the exact opposite.

I seriously have no idea how we plan to win our games. We were lucky not to concede any goals. Did Jose tell the team to defend for 80 mins and attack for 10mins? Liverpool, Spurs and City play their usual game and teams knowing their game plan but is unable to do much. Our game or should I say Jose, 1 big striker with 2 wingers. Too bad we havent sort out our right winger. Anyway, I feel Jose hasn't figure how this team should play. I don't think he can figure in the next few years.

Yeap. I think pogba really didn't look 100%. I guess he actually was ill.

Mctominay bossed it I'm really impressed. De Gea saved us once again but we were crap going forward tonight unfortunately.

Find it funny in the match day thread how people were saying Pogba was awful and Sanchez shouldn't have been brought off, Im not sure what people are actually watching. I thought pogba did fine he had a few lovely little turns and did ok but Sanchez looked very quiet and I'm not surprised he was subbed.

We will go through I'm sure, people are massively over reacting.

Whatever then, call UEFA, tell them we're sitting the second leg out because the Cafe have already predicted the result. Sure they'll understand, the wisdom on here is legendary, they'll know who we are.

What are you talking about. I didn't say we won't go through. We're favourites but we can easily concede a goal at Old Trafford. Feck we were a whisker from going out against Celta Vigo last season.

We lacked fluidity upfront. Lukaku and Sanchez had very average games. Ball kept coming back due to no hold-up play.

That and this place being absolutely fecking infested with miserable twats. A little from column A, a little from column B.

To be fair that was a pretty dreadful performance to watch. Absolutely awful in attack. I’ve been following United for 40years, and to be honest it’s starting to get hard to stomach watching shit like that.

Football should be about entertainment. Games like this make me question what the fecking point in it all is. Without entertainment, football has nothing.

Jose couldn’t be bothered, the players couldn’t be bothered, I feel for the fans and SAF who went out there to be treated to the most boring 90min of their trip.

It's amazing how bad we are attacking. We don't look like a team. We just throw the ball to Lukaku and hope for the best.

Absolute muck from United.
I don’t agree with those who think 0-0 is a good result against Sevilla.
Our attacking play is so poor it’s unbelievable.I suspect it’s down to the manager who I never felt was a good fit for us.We could sign KDB, Messi, Salah and still be shit with Jose in charge.
De Gea the one shining light on yet another uninspiring night.
He was world class yet again.Hope we keep him.

Mourihno has succeeding in sucking the life out of Man Utd. Passionless, glum, boring football. Why would anyone want to watch this tumescent rubbish? We are by far the most unwatchable team in the Premier League.

They didn't look like scoring outside of the 2 shots and we didn't even turn up, at home. I'm not overly worried.

Well, I'm not shitting myself or anything but at the same time we've drawn plenty of matches at Old Trafford that were winnable on paper.

Rashford is more of a mystery for me. I can see why Mata and Martial don't get selected to start due to the lack of tracking back/defensive application.
I can only assume that Rashford is just coming back from injury and therefore was a risk to starting him.
Your response to my post has absolutely no correlation.

It really wasn’t that bad. Nothing you haven’t plenty of times in European aways over those 40 years.
