Southampton 0:1 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

We got the 3 points and had the better chances. Clearly the team is still lacking quality and consistency in the final third but results are what matter and we did defend really wel..

Will never understand why Mourinho wants to make it their attack vs our defence. I can never accept that. Defending doesn't mean having 10 defenders on does it?

Pissed off with that.

I don't necessarily like it either, but he's had so much success with it in the past so why change?

Southampton were dominant, but it was like watching someone try and cut a tough steak with a plastic knife: lots of effort but no cutting edge.

We need to work harder in games like this. I like Fellaini, but not in a midfield two, and I think that showed today. He was getting pulled about quite a lot and it wasn't until Herrera came on that this changed.

3 points. I'll take it. I am not happy also how jose decided to defend this whole second half but he does that always and to be honest they didn't have any clear chances. But i don't see how we will get anything with this style in big away matches.

Second half was the worst half this season, but a win is a win. Still Jose’s tactics and subs are a worry

soton away.

3 points.

got battered in the second half but defend well enough to not allow them having one decent chance at all.

midfield was shit but 3 points is all that matter.

Had an off day. They were good. Southampton away is almost always tough.

got the points and that is all that matters..
We should have scored more. They didnt really have any great chances.

Move on.

Second half was shite of stick football. Cannot believe how defensive and poor we were. We just didn't try to play football and Mourinho and his absolutely ridiculous defensive subs made things worse.

Very poor performance, really miss Pogba's control in the middle. Dunno why Martial wasn't brought on for Rashford who looked gassed at the hour mark.

Still great 3 points, happy to see us stick it out.

Argh posted in the other thread. Great win. Clean sheet. There's always going to be games like this and I'm delighted we walked away with 3 points.

Credit to Southampton who did really well. Incredibly happy with the fact that we manager to grind out a win. Past four seasons this would've been a loss or a draw.

Just no cohesion at all. Unsurprisingly worsened when we removed all playmakers from the pitch, not that they were having a good game anyway.

Mkhi is frustrating, regardless of his numbers this season. He always starts a game like he's returning from a long layoff, and needs to feel his way in to the game. Sometimes he's back on it in the 2nd half. Other times he's woeful until the end/he's hooked off. Today was definitely the latter.

We look lost without Pogba. He's the only one who can pick up the ball in midfield and run forwards with it. We just couldn't get out of midfield today.

3 points though. That's good, but bloody awful to watch.

6 Points ahead of the corresponding fixtures last season as well so far

Ground out a win which we would have drawn last season. Good teams sometimes don't play well but still get points. Will take this win any day of the week.

For all the negative comments and id admit it wasnt a great performance but did De Gea have all that much to do? We seemed content to let them have the ball which made it look worse than it was. We cant hit 4 every week. I would have took that result and performance at Stoke.

To be honest one of Lukaku or Herrera should have killed the game off.

How the hell are people praising the midfield? They completely lost control of the match in the second half.

The second half is one of the longest that I have sat through. Heart is still pounding.

Mourinho bringing out his A-game. Defending with 7 players

Excellent result and a title winning/contending type of performance.

Kept yet another clean sheet. Jones man of the match for me.

Herrera with the biggest negative of the match. Missing an absolute sitter. It's not a coincidence he is on the bench. Needs to step it up.

Southhampton at home is always gonna be a difficult match. Us getting three points is what makes champions in the long haul.

Tough game but we saw it out. As long as we get these 1-0s, we'll up there for the league.

However, having midfielders who can control the game outside of Pogba looks like a necessity for the winter window.

Good win, but that was a dreadful 2nd half performance.

Worry if that's how we'll respond to being put under pressure against the better teams.

It's one to defend and counter. It's a whole other thing to simply not attack at all.

Poor display but great result. Glad we won cos then saying the ref was absolutely sh*te wont be accused of being sour grapes. He was awful.

Is it a revelation about Jose? He calls that closing the game. No poetry involved.

The 1-0's are as important as when we win 4-0. Tough match. But glad we won.

fecking hard work but we got the 3 points. Shit performance by several but Jones was excellent.

Last season we would have drawn this.

City and Chelsea are the eye catching results today, but hard fought 1-0 wins are what gets you titles.
Stuck in well. Can't always rampage the goals in the last few mins.

Got through a tricky away tie with 3 points. We probably didn't deserve the win but its good that when we don't play well that we are able to grind out a 1 0 victory. First half was very good, we were comfortable while we countered well, should have had a penalty but got the goal. Second half was extremely poor, when they upped the tempo and came at us we were unable to adapt, Matic and Fellaini were overrun while our full backs were exposed too. Fortunately Jones had one of his best games to keep them out and I thought that Lukaku led the line well.

Mourinho needs to rip into them now, as though we escaped unscathed today, there was a hint of complacency in the second half.

Herrera was good when he came on and Fellaini did well the entire match. Midfield losign control seemed more like a tactical thing from the manager, because everyone stood off in the last 10 mins, let them have possession and defended passively.
