PL W FA Premier League

Manchester United 2:1 Swansea City

Post-match discussion

Sat, 02 January 2016

Manchester United have now failed to score in their last nine first halves at Old Trafford. The last player to score a first half goal at Old Trafford in all competitions was Juan Mata v Wolfsburg in September.

And that was a penalty :annoyed:

I was wondering why no United player was by that post. Heart in mouth stuff.

For some reason it's not cool to have players marking the posts. I don't understand it, most teams do this now.

The risky formation with three defenders he was talking about is because according to average positions, this is how we set up today:

Rooney
Martial Mata Young
Schweinsteiger Herrera
Schneiderlin
Blind Smalling Jones
deGea
Quite inventive ,. Don't think I ever seen such a formation At old Trafford

I was expecting to see what I saw against Chelsea...a non-stop onslaught...at least for 20 min. I didn't see it. It started fairly well but there were periods during that game I just knew we would concede and lose the game. All the way to the whistle I expected Swansea to come back to draw. One telling comment I thought was when the commentator talked about how this was such a huge win for United. We had to win, but in the end...this is relegation fighting Swansea at OT.

I thought Rooney played well. Glad he got a goal. I am not sure what his mid-range 6 rating is about. I thought he linked up really well with those around him and if people could have finished, he could have had a few assists to go with his goal.

The link up play with Martial running on was superb today. Martial looked sharp. It was pleasing to see Young (my clear MOTM) given a run as in his preferred position today and he delivered. A standing ovation when walking to the tunnel. I was a little concerned at something I have seen a little too often - Schweini going missing in the middle third of the game. Mata was all over the park, linking up the play, which was good to see. Rooney's goal was excellent and his running was good, but his touches were poor again. It felt good to leave the ground after a win; things look up, but not instantly after the Cheksea performance, which was evident first half - we were sterile again. I cannot understand LVG's post match comments about the first half performance.

Discouraging that Smalling didn't go up for some corners. WTF?!

Liverpool away soon.......interesting. We need to start winning again and keep the pace in the build up.

Didn't notice this on my stream but it's not a terrible idea. We're poor at corners.

The amount of times we get broken on from our own corners is scandalous.

Then we get caught out with full-backs trying to do a centre-half's job.

I'd consider leaving Smalling back.

Wasn't that only our first one? Swansea left two players up field which confused matters and Smalling couldn't get someone back in time to go up himself.

Sigh. This place sometimes. I am glad many posters are taking this match as a positive. Posters who are still complaining about how performance is still 'shite' or that there was 'only 1-2 positives' should have a good look at themselves.

Many of the issues that fans have been complaining about are obviously still there and it was never going to change in one match. We are still far from where fans expect. It's not the case that all is well now.

But let's take a break from all the moaning. We have been focused on the negatives the past few weeks. Whether it is a false dawn or papering over cracks, nobody knows because we require hindsight or several more games to ascertain that.

We will never go from a 2/10 to 9/10 overnight so let's look at the positives, which if you just chill, there are many. I am not saying it's all going to be great now, but hey it's 2016, a new year. Let's get behind the team again because it seems many fans have forgotten how to do so.

Swansea aren't as bad a team as we make out, and even if they were, we were a team struggling to beat anyone. So a win will help with confidence. Plus let's not forget that Swansea had been sort of a bogey team so a win can give our team a boost psychologically.

I thought we played moderately well both halves, just different. It's interesting many posters liked the 2nd half, I believe we went 3-5-2?

For posters claiming LVG is a stubborn git who doesn't change his ways we just saw him change tactics at half time.

Overall we were attacking more and being more positive with our play. You could say it was only because Swansea let us but let's not forget people claimed Chelsea let us run over them as well; but we didn't score.

The team still feels tentative but it was good to see the players working hard. Mata, Rooney, Young, Schneiderlin, Bastian, Herrera and Martial were putting in good shifts. After complaining that players didn't seemed arsed over the last few weeks, isn't this a positive?

We have 19 shots with 6 on target and 2 goals, which obviously can be improved on but any improvement is welcome. Yes we could have lost or drew, but we didn't so let's remember that.

So let's stop moaning for the sake of moaning, and let's stop moaning for now because we have done so much of that over the last month it is getting tedious. Expectations have been changed but so be it, a win is still a positive. We hope this team has what it takes to raise our expectation over time.

Our players and manager have received so much criticism for the past 1-2 months that it is sure to affect them, despite how much they are being paid. I think it is time for us as supporters to be a bit more generous with the praise, because if even the supporters won't do so, who else will?

This is what has been shitting me the most today. All over twitter, fan channels and in here. It makes no sense but so many people are banging on about it and that it's unacceptable that we are not beating teams like that 3-0. I just don't get it.

Internet forums attract moaners like flies to light; I have decided to ignore them. There were a number of good opportunities to score today, a lot of positive runs, some great tricks and energetic play. We were ahead of Swansea to a lot of 50/50's. Bastian did great before the first goal, winning the tackle. Both assists, Youngs an Martials, were sheer class. Rooney's goal was surely right up there for goal of the month. Right place, right move. This will do his confidence the world of good.

Great to see us back to winning ways, also pleasing to see both our strikers score the goals. We're still very short in attacking options so hopefully that'll be addressed in the transfer window.

Too many fans here laugh at Madrid, Barca, Chelsea, Pool or City when their fans react like idiots or have a meltdown - one day they hopefully realize they're exactly the same and definitely not something superior. There is a difference between criticizing, pointing out what's not going well etc. and acting like a bunch of 14 year old drama queens full of blind hate

It's a lot more enjoyable to watch games without the match day forum. Don't know why people do it to themselves. The negativity spreads like the clap.

You can't watch the game properly and be commenting all the time anyway. Half of those kids will be playing FIFA at the same time.
