CL W Champions League Group B

Manchester United 2:1 VfL Wolfsburg

Post-match discussion

Martial looks dangerous and likely to create or score but he didn't see much of the ball. Mata and Schweinsteiger were brilliant and were the highlights when we dominated the game. Smalling along with Dave and Darmian were solid. Rooney and Memphis, one of them could have got a goal. It's time LvG has a word with Memphis or gives him a break. I am not criticizing a young talent who needs time but he needs to work on his decision making and keep it simple. The team missed Carrick when Schweinsteiger was replaced. Overall it is three points and a goal difference of zero for all teams in group B. It was an important win.

Martial, Mata, Smalling and Darmian great

Rooney, Memphis and Blind useless

Nervy as expected but 3 points was so important in this one so, job done. Bring on the Arses.

Very encouraging for spells, and the attacking side is coming together more. Valencia is an absolutely shocking footballer and I'm done with the group constantly making excuses for Rooney. He's rubbish.

Interesting stat from that match:

If you add up all of our players' shirt numbers, double that number, then add 3; then you equal the amount of times the ref blew against us tonight.
Its an omen.

What an important win for us, Wolfsburg are a good side. When we played quick and pressed them we really posed a threat and could've scored a couple more goals. The group is wide open after CSKA win but hopefully we can try and keep everyone fit and ticking over to avoid burnout.

So Louis Van Gaal just said on German TV that Bastian Schweinsteiger is a "Führer" in the dressing room.

I mean, the word existed before the 1930s, there's nothing wrong with that statement. But the use of the word definitely made me chuckle.
Just means 'leader'. And if the dressing room reflects the field, he is.

Glad to have CL football back at United.

Did well despite the ref and rooney being trash. Smalling, Mata and Darmian were fantastic.

Obviously panicked near the end (especially after Basti went off) but most importantly, win was needed and obtained.

Losing Shaw is such a blow. Our defence does not look half as steady.

If there was a like function I would like this post. Agreed on virtually every point. De Gea did his stuff when called upon. Smalling got my vote for both defending like a beast and taking such a vital goal so brilliantly.

? how many clear chances did Wolfsburg have?

They were dangerous IMO, and more to the point defensively we do not have the same shape or organization now. The first goal was a prime example. We also were more shaky in possession from the back.

Not helped by the Rojo injury of course which means we have Valencia or Young at full back. Good to see Jones back.

+1. Excellent post.

Just looking at highlights of the first half, we really played some brilliant stuff. Had like 5 great chances, but like the PSV game we wasted them.

It's like the opposite of what we expected, instead of barely creating anything and being super clinical we're wasting too many chances.

Thought we were much the better side for about 60/65 minutes. Should really have been in the clear. Looked absolutely dead on our feet for the rest of the game though, which doesn't bode well for Sunday!

Also, the referee was a complete joke. Couldn't see the handball from where I was sitting, but I figured it must have been pretty blatant for him to give it!

Shocking how tired and sluggish we looked considering the stage of the season.

Missed the game because of work. Delighted we got the win though, off the mark in the Champions League. The other result turned out well for us too, so that't a plus. That Mata assist though... Beauty.

The more I see Schweinsteiger the more I am impressed. His tackling, holding off opposition and his eagerness to pass the ball forwards is exactly what we need.
Smalling has been outstanding and so has Martial. I am still worried that he may get frustrated by a lack service from Rooney and Mata but his movement is still superb. Watching Mata carefully today I realize that he does have the ability to be creative but he seems to not get involved enough in central midfield and only comes alive when gets the ball in or around the box, otherwise its side pass- back pass ad nauseam.
Martial's movement is crying out for through passes and so far only Schweinsteiger appears to look to provide them.
Rooney needs to try something different now, like turning to face opponents and looking to connect with Martial. Hopefully he accepts that right now Martial is the main man and Rooney needs to feed him the ball.

Post-match presser. Someone please explain to him the difference between "dependable," "dependent," and "depends on."

He looks a bit angry on that presser, also journos asking some really stupid questions when it comes to England internationals...

The players looked very tired in the last 20 minutes. makes you wonder what the feck was LVG thinking when he played such a strong team against Ispwitch...

It looks like LVG is really pissed about something. Of course it is clear that he didn't like to watch that Wolfsburg dominated last 20 min but he was really pissed in those interviews/conferences.

Pereira for Memphis is such a wrong change to make. He should come in for Rooney or even Martial. We lost so much balance. Don't think it goes along well with the philosophy and not good for the process as well.

This could become one of those groups which forces you to dig deeper into detailed UEFA Champions League rules who's proceeding when 3 teams end up with the same amount of points.

So all 4 teams have won their home games. It's going to be an interesting group now. Have to make sure we win our 2 home games at the very least.

Even Smalling knew how to exploit their defence, the meetings worked.

Last season, Young went into form after the bird pooped in his mouth.
This season, Smalling goes into form after LvG renamed him to Mike..

? how many clear chances did Wolfsburg have?
I don't know if your question is real or rhetorical. Assuming you maybe didnt see the game, in the first half, United were all over them. They scored from their one chance, which arose from a defensive mistake when Valencia lost the defensive line, and everyone else had pushed up. They did have chances in the second half, times when United looked rattled and tired, but were still the better team. This was not Valencia or Depay's best outings for us, although Valencia made a few important tackles.

Win against Sunderland 3-0 playing at a walking pace, controlling the match and some start complaining about we don't play with swagger and pace and keep attacking. Beat Wolfsburg 2-1 after a horrendous opening goal, come back and win, play with pace and producing an open end to end enjoyable game, some start complaining about tiredness and the selection against Ipswich.

How about fecking enjoying the win? Wolfsburg moved the ball with pace and intent and probably produced the best performance at Old Trafford this season, doing their part to liven up the game and we won at the end of it. We have Arsenal over the weekend and with both Schweinsteiger (awesome reaction for the card, fussballgot) and Schneiderlin on yellow, it was a calculated decision taking one of them off and in the end, it paid off.

Some of the complaints are rather silly. We didn't always win 5-0 against Champions League opponents, and I think we'll win this group. We've got the win we wanted to get us on track and Champions League midweek matches at Old Trafford again :devil: Yea, y'all don't have to keep praising United and it'sa forum and all that, but the way we cry about small things, kind of spoil it for me. We're Manchester United, not Moanchester United.

Refereeing was poor poor.. He absolutely fecked it up. No consistency. Similar fouls didn't get same punishment. Schneiderlin first yellow was a joke..
