PL L FA Premier League

Manchester United 0:1 West Bromwich Albion

Post-match discussion

As much as I criticise Jose, I think this is true too. United has the resources to demand winning football AND attractive football, and ultimately the fans won't be satisfied until we have both. However, outside of Pep, there aren't really many (any?) coaches out there who are guaranteed to bring both, and if Pep remains at City for a while, we could well be looking at a few more barren years. Better football would buy the manager more time, but eventually the knives would be out again.
Yeah, so many average names given by some here. Just cause they're attacking minded, yet they haven't won shit. For instance Sarri and Tuchel.
Tuchel is regarded already here as a second coming.
I mean we could risk it and give it to a young, promising manager but soon you'd see 'that and that manager out' threads if things wont go according to plan. And United plan is and should be to stay at the top and win things.

I'm completely with you on this.
Things need to change. Massive summer for the club and Jose himself.

I have heard fans saying the exact same thing for two years now, yet nothing changes only the crazy wages of our players.

It's really alarming how we gave zero fecks and had no idea how to attack. Shameful stuff.

What does that have to do with losing against the last placed team ..at home?!
Look at our squad on paper and look at West Broms, our front three were Sanchez-Lukaku-Mata. That is a front 3 that should be able to compete at the highest levels.
I used to think the issue are mostly with the players but I dont think so anymore.

You illustrate my point ,
Mata / Sanchez not in the same league as Beckham : Scholes / Giggs and Lukaku not a patch on RVN

Sanchez and Pogba are 2 of the worlds most expensive players both have been abysmal it's easy to blame the manager for wrong tactics / set up etc but these players are failing miserably in almost every aspect of there game they look clueless and impotent

That doesn't help. It's not just about the result.

There was nothing much to play for in the league. It was just not happening today. We could've' had Messi today and still not score.

Reiterates how clueless Mourinho is.

Another tumescent performance from over paid pre-madonnas. They should donate their wages to charity after serving up this utter crap.

Bottom line is that we still don't have a team that can compete for the league.
Half of them are not good enough to wear a Utd shirt. SAF must be livid watching this rudderless ship.

Just so bad, yet you could see us not scoring early on, so surely the whole mentality was wrong if the average fan could see it so clearly.

Appalling. Absolutely appalling.

One of the worst performances i've seen for a very long time. We lost to the bottom of the league at home and, by the way, we deserved to lose. They're rock bottom of the league. They'd previous won 3 games and they beat us. Sometimes, a team at the bottom of the league can get to OT and go on a mad one. Their 'keeper has a mental game, they defend like dogs and then they get a jammy goal of somebodies backside. That does happen but today that didn't happen.

We got outplayed. We got outplayed by West Bromwich Albion. No disrespect to West Brom they're a grand club who've been around but this season they've been a shambles an absolute shambles.

What game were you watching? We were not outplayed today. Most of the football happened on WBA's half and they scored a jammy goal with Matic providing the assist. We just couldn't get through a ball today/ finish a chance. Lets not take it to extreme please.

Just got back from the game. A really poor performance by all apart from De Gea & Smalling. Lack of urgency, inventiveness and dare I say it width. Movement off the ball is non existent and has been for most of the season. I hate this functional style of play, it doesn't suit United at all. Lukaku is like a statue at times, Sanchez cuts in every time, same with Mata, they shouldn't be playing in same team as they want to occupy the same space. Mourinho substitutes are just awful, bringing on Lingard for Herrera to occupy the same space as Mata & Sanchez, they all want to play No.10. Bring Martial on, I thought great someone who will make something happen but then takes off Pogba WTF. Rashford for Young was the only sub to make sense but by then damage was done. I wont be losing any sleep if he walks at the end of the season.

Bottom line is that we still don't have a team that can compete for the league.

I'm not convinced that is the reason

Utd V City

Lets get the keeper out of the way quickly. Ederson is good, but he’s not DDG. We are blessed with the best.

Centre half.

I’m not a huge fan of Smalling, to be fair. Lindeloff hasn’t been a huge success to date. Rojo is a sick note. Jones is solid if prone to an error, cant catch a break with injuries. Baily is rash, but he’s good. All in all, that’s not great. But the thing is City have nothing to write home about in this department either. Oatmendi is a disaster waiting to happen. Stones is just funny. They off loaded Mangala. Kompany is very good, but he only played 13 games this season. You can’t count Laporte as he has only played 5 games.

All in all. There’s no obvious winner here.

They spent a fortune on full backs, but neither Mendy or Danilo have really featured. Walker is as good a full back as the premier league has, but is he the 16pt difference. Valencia has been solid defensively and Ashly Young may well be our player of the season. Neither are what you would call an ideal selection, but I find it difficult to point the finger at them and say you’re the reason we are so far behind City, especially when they have used Delph as one of their full backs for a lot of the season.

They have Sterling and Sane out wide with the option of using Bernardo Silva. They have been very effective. We have Martial, Rashford and now Sanchez. They have been largely ineffective, but that’s a pretty decent match up on paper.

Fernandinho is a good player. I like him. But our direct comparison is Matic and he is, in my opinion, every bit his equal.

Up front, they have either Aguero or Jesus. Aguero is Top class. Jesus is decent. But we splashed 90 million for a proven premier league striker who scored 25 PL goals for EVERTON last season. We should be competitive in this department too.

This basically leaves KDB and David Silva versus Pogba and Mata to account for the gap. The City pair have been way more effective, but I can’t help feeling that if they swapped teams, this wouldn’t still be the case.

Ferguson won a title with No midfield
Maybe there is another reason we are so far behind?

Disagree with this. I think most fans will be satisfied with attractive football with the odd trophy thrown in. Shouldn't be too much of an ask.

It’s not the players. I promise that if the likes of Pogba and Martial move on, they will absolutely tear it up elsewhere. They’d both be brilliant for City or Liverpool.

We just have no attacking strategy to speak of and it’s unforgivable.

Can someone please explain to me on the West Brom goal why Matic heads the ball back into the middle? Did he forget what box he was in? I cannot for the life of me understand why a defender would do that on a cross into his own box. Unless they were 8 years old and unintentionally got a head to it!! Utterly spastic defending!

Because against good teams, he sets up as underdogs, vs not so good teams he sets up us in a same way but it will never work.

I think we just don't have the artfulness to break down defensive sides that leave no gaps at the back. Our attack is a bit one dimensional sometimes. We're more likely to beat (or get thrashed by) an attacking side because they come at us.

Not sure he did it purposely, unless he had Rodriques in his FPL team ;)

Do you really think Mourinho will change? You are expecting a man who is still boasting his successes to get by. He will never change.

Still can't make my mind that we lost. Imagine having an exam tomorrow and postponing everything to watch this match just to get a good vibe for tomorrow. Will never postpone anything for United again (Saying that but I know I'll do it again anyway).

Think we are saying it more out of hope than anything. I agree that he is trying to build his own confidence up by telling everybody about his past glories. He has to change or we could be in big trouble.

We'll never understand why he did it. He was simply being enigmatic.

Absolutely shocking today. And you could see it coming after 20 minutes or so, we've seen it too any times in the last few months. I've come on here and said it loads of times, the players did not look bothered. And that's shocking. There may not be a prize to play for, but they owe it to all the fans and to themselves to put in a performance. Jose has got to address this attitude that is seemingly throughout the squad or he will likely never succeed how he wants to.

A massive shame to see Pogba go back to what we had seen from him a few weeks ago. Especially after that performance last week. We will need some time of response during the week, and I can only hope we will be bothered to show up for a semi-final at the weekend.

He is not one to change. He is not trying to build his confidence, he really believes that his methods will work, that's why he is constantly poking barbs like "poets" etc to manager who prefer an attacking philosophy. Next season he will once again try to replicate the same method. Whether it works or not we will wait and see..

The day after buying a season ticket, that was not what I wanted to see!

Awful performance, it was just like they couldn't be arsed but surely playing at home against the bottom side is the chance for our players to go out and enjoy themselves but it was all slow and tumescent. You see us play like that and despite being second, we've still got miles to go.

This is the price of not coaching a team properly. One week we look outstanding because one player pulled off an amazing individual performance, when nobody has a good game, it's shite.

FFS jones is the sick note as well as Rojo. Unti we have a solid CB who doesnt get injured every time he kicks the ball we will never go anywhere. Bruce Pallister May Jonssen Stam Vidic Ferdinand all got injured but were back playing in no time. Jones needs to be fecked off asap

Everyone knows I'm not a Mourinho fan, bjt you cant blame him for today. He ended up with 6 attackers and we still looked shit. This is on the players. We gifted the league to City.

Kind of missed my point there a bit buddy. But carry on.

Totally agree with all of this. Surely the indication of a manager doing well is when the team looks like more than the sum of its parts. Look at Burnley, or Newcastle - on paper they're rubbish and their managers are getting then to perform well above what you'd expect from them.

Then look at us. On paper, we should be neck and neck with City but week after week we underperform. Let's be honest, as enjoyable as beating City last week was, we were hugely lucky. When was the last time we played really well?

Top 4 has been sealed for a while now and while I am pissed off with todays result if we were going to have a shitehouse of a performance I'm glad it happened today and not next saturday, not that i'm overly confident for that match either mind you.

I wonder with a new coach if they would still look clueless and impotent...
I suppose that the 100million dollar question

But I'm sure Jose doesn't tell them to give the ball away regularly and look disinterested in proceedings

I disagree. It's just job to motivate players even in games where we don't have much to play for. This is done by multiple ways including the starting lineup.

Instead of giving a platform for Martial/Rashford to show him why they deserve to start games he plays a similar lineup to our previous game. People act like other teams (look at Bayern, Real, and Barca specifically) have games like this as regularly as us. These teams haven't had much to play for all season since their leagues have been essentially finished but they still perform well in their domestic games. Those managers simply know how to motivate the current generation better. They know when their team may need a spark and they adjust the lineup to do so. Jose doesn't do that.

One thing we miss and it is perfectly discribed by the German word "Torgeil" (Goal horny). Great teams want to score, they enjoy it and this team? What do they want? Scoring is not a part of it ..... Mou missed the chance to form a team with spirit.

He went full throttle which is alien to him, but we still couldnt get a goal. To me you cant blame him this time, its on the players
