PL L FA Premier League

West Ham United 3:2 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

Tue, 10 May 2016

I agree with what you said about Mata, I actually just posted similar in his performance thread. Thought he certainly merited starting. Which is more than I can say for his best pal (though he did win the ball back for our second).

I can't believe a club the size of Man United relies on a player like Fellaini so much but my god do we miss him in games like today. Feckin eejit throwing elbows around the place.

I've always wanted to see Bournemouth play at Old Trafford, I have been to see them a few times, my uncle lives there. But my god, both of our games against them have come after the most miserable 3-2 defeats that fecked us up for the CL in different ways, and it's hard now as it was then to care about the next match.

Even a point would have been something, to keep the pressure on City.
Yeah Mata was pretty much one of the only players to actually have a good match. I'm not sure what position he's best in, but with this style of football I don't think it matters too much, if at all.
If we had Fellaini today there is actually a strong chance we would have won, which is so, so sad. Herrera did so little and its frustrating because people have cried out for him all season. It could be argued that he's another that simply doesn't fit in a Van Gaal system, but it's too easy to just pile all the blame on Van Gaal. The majority of the players just weren't/aren't good enough, simple as.
Bournemouth have had a great season for the size of the club haven't they? I was really pleased to see them stay up and they have quite a few good players, I think it will end in a draw if anything. It will be interesting to see what the atmosphere is like at old trafford, I bet it will be a bit hostile if we don't win well.

We've been doing it all season, most fouls in the league I'd imagine that's the first time a United side has done that.

Thought Ander and Rooney were both lucky not to go in the book earlier to be honest, our players jusy don't seem to have the body strength to successfully tackle big strong players like Kouyate, Antonio etc and resorted to fouling.

Watching tonight i actually said to my brother these players need to hit the weights big time over the summer. We must be the weakest team in the league get bullied by most of the teams we play. It's ridiculous.

Last FA Cup game at the Boleyn*, last Premier League game at the Boleyn*, last thrown in at the Boleyn*, it's all too much. I demand they replay the last First Division game they ever had at the Boleyn* from pre-1992. They should have carried on until someone got a last hattrick at the Boleyn*. Come on, behead some royalty there, last beheaded wife of Monarch at Boleyn*. I want my nostalgia over-sentimental & over-stated dammit.

Interestingly, I'm told that only one major trophy was ever presented in 111 years at Upton Park. Manchester United winning the 1967 Division 1 Championship.

Also, other teams who moved grounds without such stupid overblown hysteria:

* Otherwise known, since the year dot as Upton Park

What a bollocks post. There was a big deal made on TV for the last game at Highbury and there were all kinds of tributes and things going on before and after the game.

Stop sneering at tradition and history just because you got hammered.

Only watched the first 25 minutes of the second half because of work which wasn't too bad as we managed to turn it around thanks to martial. Conceded right after I shut it off basically... wtf happened in the rest of the game that we got battered so badly stats wise ?

Didn't read his post but, Highbury didn't get a send off like that. Not saying that because you're an Arsenal fan but, Highbury was home to one of the biggest, successful and best clubs in Britain.

Don't get the deal with Upton Park, and it is Upton Park

Fukking hell. Work took me away from the TV today but I'm going to watch the game on my DVR anyway.

They've just been going on about it for months, every report about them this season mentioned it in some manner.
It got boring months ago and its been in overdrive for weeks with the fa cup thing too.
And a lot of it is fecking cringey, its hard not to sneer a bit.
Its just hard to have generous feelings towards them atm

Just back from the game, good away end but the madness outside there was so much that happened I cannot even think where to begin. Police lost control of those streets,

So....

To sum up..

We have a manager, who hasn't a clue
We have an assistant manager who is more interested in his next female conquest.
The man to the right of LvG appears to be more trusted than Giggs but only writes down data on a computer
We have Ed, stuttering about the place as always.
We have Fergie, giving it large about Giggs, then distancing himself from Giggs and then being "secretly" photographed with Poch.
All the while, our team shits itself yet again. Including our so called "characters" Rooney and Carrick.

The only one person on that pitch, fit to represent United tonight, was Martial. De Gea too but, he had no chance with the goals.

We are a disgrace to the name Manchester United, both on and off the pitch.

3 shots on goal. feck off

Well put. I think people are still digesting what happened tonight but we're going to realize later that shit really hit the fan, and not just in the context of this season. This was a massive game for us, the last of a few massive league games, and everything that has been going on in this club the last 3+ seasons cropped up from when we first set foot on the grounds.

Even granting that we were shit for most of the game, the one thing I really can't get over is that we were in position to win and completely bottled it. There have been plenty of bad performances we've put in over the years but I and a lot of other fans would've been absolutely shocked if United did this a few years ago, in such an important game. Now, it can't come as much of a surprise because we seem to keep finding new ways to lose or draw, either through a lack of game-changing quality in the squad or just plain stupidity. We can blame it on transition and several of the other issues, but I think it all points to a complete lack of backbone in this club - from the executives on down. We have become highly risk-averse - as exhibited in our manager - we're persisting with systems and methods that clearly don't work well for fear of going outside the box - as exhibited in LVG and everyone above him - and we don't have people in positions of leadership who will call out the underachievement and get things moving in a more positive direction.

The obvious things that need to change are the manager and coaching staff. I want no exceptions made for Giggs, either, he needs to follow them out the door. We simply cannot go through another season or part of another season with this underachieving bunch in charge, regardless of where we finish or whether or not we win the FA Cup.

I've felt for most of the season that we actually have a good enough squad to compete but after tonight I'm really not sure anymore. It's one thing to say that Mata is slow and Rooney is old and Carrick is both old and slow, but we seem to have players who can't naturally raise their game to another level and overcome exceptional circumstances like tonight. Martial, De Gea, and even Smalling are exceptions, they show world-class or potential world-class levels when there is pressure and even seem to thrive in hostile atmospheres. Other players like Herrera, Schneiderlin, Rojo, etc. seem to cower in conditions like tonight or make an honest effort but lose any edge they may have. The manager, it's true, figures into that but I also don't see a natural command coming from any of the players we've signed, except for maybe BFS, who is always injured.

So the question I ask myself is whether we're really a couple of top players away from competing for the league again or are we looking at another facelift? I'm starting to lean towards a facelift. At the moment, I only see maybe 6 or 7 players who are fit to play for us - Martial, De Gea, and Smalling are obviously good enough, while Shaw looked very good before his injury and you have a couple of younger players like Rashford and Fosu-Mensah who look to have a future. Another manager might improve the players we already have (Klopp, for example, has been superb in that area), but if you don't have a good number of charismatic players in the team, you're little more than game-raisers who are up for matches against rivals or the odd 'big' game when circumstances are in your favor. Tonight was a special, historical match at West Ham, but a PL or European season is dotted with matches of this type when it takes character to pull you through them. I'm not convinced that very many of our players have the ability or mettle to do this at United.

Oh ffs, since the match started 45-60 mins late, my recording was done soon after we scored to go up 2-1. So I go online to see the result, expecting to pick up another 4 points in the score prediction table, only to be gutted by this 3-2 nonsense. Holy hell.

My piss is firmly boiled.

Can't wait to hear the excuses from the LvG apologists. fecking foundations. feck off!!!

They will say we fought back in the second half and that Man City can lose next week and we can win. Just heard LVG say on the interview his favorite line: "it shall be possible".

Watching the MUTV post match and even Dennis Irwin is ripping into the team. Simply second best he says. No kidding.

2-1 to us would have been a robbery, they had 20 attempts to our 3 and bossed us. Complete bottle job and half of them need to go, manager first of all.

Literally this. Almost no-one in this fecking club from top to bottom; including the buffoons higher up who are tolerating this are fit to represent this club. Disgraceful

Also, if these players cannot get pumped up for a game that would put them in the top 4, how would they deal with the big European nights? We just aren't fit enough to be in the Champions League to be honest! Lets face it, about 3/4 of this team are frauds and nothing is going to change that

You might not want to believe this, but if we had Fellaini and Schweinsteiger in the line up tonight we would have won.

Just finished watching the game.

We looked rattled from the off. But for comedy finishing westam could have scored 6.

I'd give schneiderland back to Southampton tomorrow, not a United player. Too many poor performances all round really, Blind and Smalling probably had their worst game together.
Smalling was given room in the middle to come forward several times but he'd invariably bottle it and turn and go back. Plus the manhandling of players on corners drives me mental. I can see him giving away a pen in the championship.
Hererra and his fecking fowling

I hate westam and I'm glad we won't be going back to their shithole ground. White sock wearing 2wats

Me missed most of the match. The delay made me see 2 WH goals .

Will WH be punished for attack our bus? This is clearly cheating.:wenger:

Funny thing with our team in this style is that we focus so much on possession yet we can't even pass good enough in the other team half while watching teams like WHU passing like Barcelona in our own half splitting our defense more so that we did to theirs.

Though of course it could be that our tempo is so slow that we are trying to pass thru 2-3 players who are in their defensive position already. The football under LVG is simply too slow in general to entertain, win and whatever the feck.

Outplayed. West Ham were more hungry, more ready to give a royal send off to all the fans who have come there. They ran hard, tackled hard and were bloody brilliant in the air. We could not cope with either of the 3.

3-2 is a good result, largely thanks to Martial. Really, the game should have been over in the first half. West Ham for looking for touches to fall down so that they can go aerial. We gave them plenty. But really we had no choice.
Wouldn't blame LvG too much on this. The players were decent enough to win the match on their own.

For all the possession talks, we have no answer when the opposition is ready to attack the feet and rob the ball at good pace. We are fine if the opposition is as lethargic as us. Else they can simply make tackles and take the ball away with ease.

They should have been rightly angry after getting pelted by bottles in the bus. Then you get Lingard posting stupid pics of him acting scared and other young players larking about. Don't know how Carrick and Rooney reacted but I think guys like Rio, Keane and the like would have used this to stir themselves up. It's unfortunate that the players do not have that winning mentality and LVG does nothing to get their heads in the game.

The thing that disappointed me was that they knew West Ham would come after them and they just were not prepared for that onslaught. It was always going to be a smash and grab in this situation but honestly FFS that was the meekest display of trying to hold on to a lead in the biggest game of the season.

You might not want to believe this, but if we had Fellaini and Schweinsteiger in the line up tonight we would have won.

We would have played better with the Wig (can't believe I'm saying that) but we would not have won. They were just better than we were and 2-1 lead was a mirage. We were poor, lost all indivdual battles (save Martial) and can't see how those two would have made any difference. But no use hypothesizing. The table does not lie. We deserve to be where we are at.

Of course, the wig would have done better coz he is made for this kind of games. He might give away fouls but ander probably outdid him this match without actually being useful in one area.

People talk like we don't use tall players to counter this kind of team or something like that. SAF used to play the likes of Oshea instead of rafael in defense against the likes of stoke just for that. Long balls and heading are legit tactics. Also the wig himself was unplayable for a few matches against us and we had some of the best defenders in the world back then.

Not a chance. Fellaini would have been sent off within 60 mins as he would fail to win tackles and kick players or elbow them in frustration. Bastian will surely earn a yellow, after kids rob the ball off his feet.
They were flying all around and there was little 2 more slow players could have done.

You missed all the fun where WHU could've been up 3-4 nil in the first half then.

We had 3 shots to their 20.
Two of our shots were on target (both scored) to their 6.
We committed 18 fouls (Herrera 5) to their 6.
They won 60% of aerial challenges.
We lost. No surprise there.

Vangle's pre match interview had me worried. It didn't exude confidence. He was concerned that the incident may have affected the team and the West Ham players and fans would be fired up for the game. Felt like he was getting the excuses ready in advance.

We were overrun. Simple as that. They looked bigger, stronger, fitter plus they seemed to want it more. Never thought I would say this but we missed Fellaini tonight. At least we would have had a plan b.

And that's what worries me the most. What goes on in the heads of vangle and the players because there seems to be no belief.

I was really optimistic yesterday and thought God realised that United fans are better human beings than City fans so he gave us a last Chance.
But we do not deserve anything. I have no clue why we did not Appoint Mourinho who would have saved us top 4 and a much needed CL spot.
Just look at Liverpool. Although they did not finish that great in the league you can see that Klopp has already laid the groundwork for next season.
On top of that Bayern snapped up Sanches because we were too stupid to Trigger the release clause.

I feel a bit bad for Martial and DdG who are worldclass Players and deserve to win trophies.

Bottled it.
Yes they did. I didn't come on here after the game as I was weary from following the game. I have said it a dozen times, this team is beaten before it enters the field of play. There are no leaders, because he doesn't want any. The leaders United used to have would have been having stand up fights with him. He wants players who he can browbeat into doing what he wants. It's alright having some nice players, but you need a Roy Keane type, what we needed up front was a Mark Hughes types or god help us a Diego Costa who would snarl at the opposition and use every dirty trick in the book. Other teams do it to us, about time we pushed the limits a bit.
I watched the MUTV phone in after the game. People just want LvG out, they are fed up with his excuses and that he doesn't show any leadership as a manager. I am afraid the team are a reflection of him.

He was as bad as I've seen a Utd player all year. I like he guy but he has fallen way below the standards he set at Bilbao and Utd last year. He wasn't up for the fight, and it showed in the stupid fouls which gave the hammers the opportunity to bombard our CDs. They were bound to score eventually because it's fecking obvious that LVG hasn't a fecking clue how to set up his side in the face of an aerial threat.

Martial doesn't deserve this result. His team mates let him down.

We've all been saying forever how shit the team's mentality is, and here you have the result. How a highly experienced and well paid coaching staff did nothing to arrest that is just unbelievable.
I think the team reflects the mentality of the manager. Someone mentioned his pre-match comments. They had me worried. I think it is perfectly possible to fire these players up, SAF would have, he would have had them wanting to tear West Ham limb from limb. LvG was making excuses before we even kicked off. You don't give players excuses.
