We're an average team that got found out in one of those high intensity PL games that make you realise top flight football has still got some guts and passion.
I don't agree with this theory that we bottled it. I saw a team trying hard last night (all bar MS) but we just have too many players that are just not of the right quality. DDG and Martial delivered. Rashford's a young lad whose time will come but there are question marks over everyone else that started.
Schneiderlin winds me up more than any other and epitomises, for me, the state of affairs at our club. Never have I seen him break out of a jog, busting a gut, having a go at someone, demanding the ball, getting riled, even fecking smiling or something. Nothing from him. You'd swear he wasn't that bothered and his first half performance strolling around the pitch whilst Mark Noble et al were giving it their all was disgraceful. In a team devoid of leadership he was head and shoulders above the rest for his lack of it. I don't see a way back for him
Blind is a good footballer and reader of the game with good ball skills but simply not built to play CB properly. He was targeted last night and it was a simple tactic that worked. He got bullied and brilliantly so.
Rojo, as we all know, is not good enough. A trier but doesn't look premier league.
Valencia as above. Served us well but no more than a journeyman
Herrera couldn't stand the heat last night. Such an underwhelming signing what is it that he actually does well? No physicality, limited passing, poor tackler constantly giving fouls away. He's been found out in this league.
Smalling looks shaky and lacking in confidence again possibly due to the deficiencies of the rest of the back four? I still think he's class and with better and more reliable defenders alongside him is worth sticking with
Mata I'm undecided about. Blood and guts games like last night aren't for him as he's another who is simply not built for it but he does work his socks off and he's always got a bit of skill on tap as per the goal.
Rooney worked hard as ever an above average performance in a very ordinary team. Captain by default only he is no on pitch leader for me and if we're looking to progress next year surely we need to be looking higher than squeezing an ageing front man into the number 10 slot?
Unfortunate for us to come up against a West Ham fired up for their last game at Upton Park but if we have any thoughts of winning the EPL or the CL again we need far more quality in our team to cope with such occasions. What would happen if this team found itself in a CL semi against Real Madrid doesn't bear thinking about.

Agreed. Hopefully we can get more out of Schneiderlin and maybe another signing to provide that.
Personally, I'd rather neither Mata nor Rooney be an automatic starter next season. Keep any one of them and use them as backup/rotational players. We need a better #10 than either of these two. Someone who can either give us dribbling and pace in abundance, or a proper playmaker who can run the show.
I'm a little wary of Leicester players, but for a reasonable fee he might be worth it. Still think we need to sign more talented players though.

To be honest, I didn't know much about the guy and never really noticed him in games against Southampton. The caf was drooling over him and built him up to be the ideal DM/B2B midfielder. So I was just going off that hype and hoping for the best. What I've seen is an extremely limited footballer. Hopefully the new manager revitalizes him.

I believe that as well. That Leicester team nearly got relegated, Liverpool were awful and he has got them performing a lot better. They give their players confidence. This team is devoid of that. The only time LvG is upbeat is when he is talking about himself.

Never saw how we were going to do this, winning the Cup replay at WHU was a surprise, didn't expect to see lightning strike twice, tbh.

Before the game last night, I was getting that feeling I used to get in the build-up to big games, that mixture of expectation/nerves/excitement, today, it's just thinking, well it really is time LvG took his managerial "skills" elsewhere, tout de suite, United need new a new manager to come in shake the place up from top to bottom, starting with the squad, it's easier to name the ones that deserve to stay, we all know who they are.

Having slept on it I'm returning to this thread probably against all good sense. But here is my view:
For what it’s worth, I don’t think the game should have been played yesterday. The FA should have stopped it. The events before the match put the safety of fans in danger and the safety of our players in danger. 1 bottle landing in a different place could have done serious damage to anyone of our staff. At that point, for all the talk of being part of football and such nonsense, it’s simply not.
The “best” and “most exciting” league in the world leads by example on so many (financial) things and prides (PR-whores) itself on doing so yet allowed those scenes to play out and a delayed game continue. Take the stand. Punish the club. Replay the match behind closed doors, at a neutral venue or award the default away win. Stamp it out there and then and let no excuses cater for the actions of idiots. If City want to blame someone, blame West Ham. Their fans put the travel arrangements of nearly 40,000 others into jeopardy along with the safety of them all too. Let people get their scheduled transport routes home too rather than forsake everything for the sake of a delayed kick off in a hostile and a downright wrong environment.

I agree that is might have shaken some of the players up, but Chris Smalling and Jesse Lingard filming and giggling ruins that argument for some. Smalling didn't seem bothered and played absolute crap. It will have scared the shit out of some, we are not all bravehearts, that is how it is.
The most disappointing thing about last night was, as a United fan for so many years I had grown accustomed to us closing games out from winning positions. As soon as Martial put us ahead, under SAF the 3 points were ours. We were too tough for most teams to come back from that situation. However last night there was an air of inevitability about them coming back, every time they got a set piece I was worried. West Ham have conceded more goals than Watford, Crystal Palace and West Brom, and they got hammered at home by Swansea at the weekend. Yet in the end they got what was a deserved 3 points against us. The fact that they have now scored 18 more goals than us says it all really.

Definitely affected our players, and people react in different ways depending on age, experience & personality. Preparedness to grovel on the floor or trust in the strength of the windows, hoping they are not sitting facing a particularly firmly chucked bottle being other factors.

You would know the time for the journey of your brain from your arse, especially considering yours has not moved in like forever.
I was lucky enough to have the night off and shared a nice bottle of wine with a good friend of mine over this game. Maybe it was the wine but we were both so non-plussed about the entire game. Even commenting on just how shite we were during it and how shite we've become.
I don't know why but it really removed any emotional connection to going up and then being kicked in the nuts late on. We were just in hysterics about how absurd of a team we are now.

Ofcourse the defenders were at fault on the set-pieces, but when you are playing a team who, like you say, are a threat at set pieces, you start by taking extra care not to foul in dangerous set-piece areas. Defending is about more than going in for challenges - it's about ushering, manipulating the attack towards certain areas, etc.
We should have been more sensible with the fouling I agree. The stuff from some players on the coach is bugging me. Maybe it was bravado, but giggling like schoolgirls, for gods sake. Get angry. Really angry.

Goals happened. Yes Fellaini was missing, but I think it now emphasises how much DDG has done this season, that the defensive figures are not as impressive as they seem. Could you imagine Bruce/Pallister or Rio/Vidic would defend like that. We defend by keeping the ball, but if we don't do it as well it exposes what is not a great defence.

Awful once again.. We didn't start playing until the second half when Carrick come on. LVG simply has to go once the season has ended, should have done it in December in all honesty.

Our inability to defend set-pieces has been a massive downfall this season and it was clearly evident today. Our whole midfield was a shambles. Apart from Martial our attack was a shambles. Blind was awful.

Completely agree, can you imagine Roy Keane, Scholes, Butt, hell even a Neville acting like that so soon before our biggest game of the season? I certainly can't as they'd be mentally focused on the match, not lying on the ground taking "selfies" like children. I can imagine a real captain having a word with the young players acting like that too, telling them not to be distracted.
The fact that these videos were uploaded before kick off infuriates me, who the hell is more concerned with social media than the match we're about to play? If they can't focus on the match they're about to play then ban phones from the team bus, dressing room etc. If they're going to act like children then treat them like children.
