FA L FA Cup Quarter-Finals

Wolverhampton Wanderers 2:1 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

Sat, 16 March 2019

Considering what we have been through all season under Jose, and Ole did take us back to challenge again on top four and got us to the last 8 of the C.L then it still okay, but we need a big reaction after that stupid international break, we need to get back to the winning ways start from Watford game. I trust Ole in this.

given the form this past week the international break might be the best thing for us.

Wolves performance was very good, made to look brilliant as we couldn't get to grips with them, as they did last week against Chelsea. Take your point that bringing ALL those players back at the same time (I know Matic played against Arsenal), no fluidity, and players trying to get themselves into the flow of a game, but Wolves play that way week in week out, are comfortable in that system, and all their players were fit and match fit.

It's the same tactics Watford used against City last week and City slapped the shit out of them. We have to do more with the ball, that's why I've been saying for weeks that we are relying too much on the counter, top sides have to do more in possession in the bulk of games as teams will sit deeper against us. Ole got the selection wrong but it's been no secret for a while now that the creativity beyond Pogba is lacking in this squad, and it was very much in evidence tonight.

Very disappointing. Selection wrong. Too many players forced in. Martial looks out of sorts as does Lingard AND Matic and Herrera. Why play all returning players all at once? Bit amateur that. May as well have gone with Fred and McTominay as they are on song but we threw everyone in and we looked dog shite

Rashford, Martial and Lingard should be embarrassed with themselves. That was absolutely pathetic.
The longer that performance went on the more they hid. They weren't good enough and having crazy shots from distance is not a way of stepping up to the plate. You need your teammates to aid the overall cause yes, but if each individual steps up a little, which you expect from players at this level, then you can make something happen.

It certainly doesn't help when all of you up top are having a stinker. And so yes, it was absolutely pathetic and they do not deserve the greater portion of their wages this week.

Hopefully the drop in performance is not down to thinking they’ve already done enough to get Ole the job. It’s like the PSG game has given them the licence to relax 10%.

Gutted, especially after City's lucky VARless display. Lindelof rescinded red for us... Safe passage for them'uns. Swansea city should count themselves extremely unfortunate they aren't in the semis.

Course we'd still be out but...
But the FA cup, while being lovely to own for a year, is not key to our long term success.

Revenue from Champions league football is.

What we need to do now is show Barcelona we are Utd and put absolutely everything into getting that top 4 spot. Ole has done an amazing job this far. Down to the players now to treat every league game like a cup final till season's end.

That said if by May 12th things don't go right I still back Ole. Plenty of fans won't agree with me... but Ole's the right man who was hamstrung by our disastrous start. I hear some talking about manager bounce but no way, not for me, too many great results for it to be categorised that way.

Ole's at the wheel Sing it loud and proud. Hope I'll still be hearing that song come August.

Wolves got their gameplan right and exvdcute it perfectly. No complaints from me. As long as we beat them in the league I can let this slide.

People should put emotions aside and realise the PSG was somewhat of a fluke. They gifted us a goal and we got a speculative penalty. You simply can't expect to have 4 shots on goal and score 3 times going forward. We're a side that needs a lot of work done and many of these players aren't good enough

Rashford needs to be selfish within reason. Those random 40yard shots that will obviously amount to nothing are getting frustrating.

Pogba was abysmal. Held the ball too long among other mistakes such as not even being present for majority of the game. You don't have to glide past 5 players on your own when you could easily pass to a teammate for faster transition.

Frustrating game all together. Shaw was fine other than thd mistake and smalling was great in the first half. Hopefully we regroup during this break

No excuses, the Ole honeymoon period and new manager syndrome is over, if we finish 6th and get smashed against Barca are we still fine with Ole at the wheel....

I am, but I was also surprised (well, not surprised obviously, :D) that we were suddenly a great team, after winning a few game & Mourinho was thwarting a Title challenge, all of his own doing & nothing else.

(not a defence of Mourinho)

We're probably somewhere in between - not as bad as today, not as good as the results were having people think.

But at least we LIKE the Manager, score a few goals occasionally & so on. This lot aren't going to win the League though.

Because I can't see us losing the same fixture twice
Exactly the point I made earlier.

The footballing Gods work in mysterious ways.

If we'd won today, I'd have put money on Wolves beating us in the league. But with Wolves winning today, I think that gives United the right kick up the arse they need for the match in 2 weeks.

Same swing happened against Arsenal (3-1 then 0-2) for what it's worth.

Yeah exactly.. I'm a firm believer in the footballing gods!

Plus, its pretty rare that we lose the same fixture twice in a season... Happened with Chelsea a season or two back I think, but yeah, other then that.

It's interesting that against PSG at home and now Wolves, with almost a first choice line-up, we have barely offered any threat at all. Perhaps some players deserve the benefit of the doubt due to returning from injury but it is still alarming.

So many of our players just seem to assume that we will score, without making any effort to create decent chances. 4 players in the penalty area yet the player in possession opts against crossing.

A lacklustre performance with too many players believing their own hype.

We didn't play badly at Arsenal, we just missed a shedload of chances.

Tonight, however... this was as bad a performance as it gets. Let's hope, against all odds, that the international break will actually be beneficial for once.

Martial, Jesse, Pogba, Herrera and matic all look like they haven't been playing much match football in the past month. Doubted their every move and they weren't moving as freely as usual.

Wolves deserved the win.

The most annoying thing about tonight is we all know with a similar team/squad we'll probably beat them comfortably 0-2/0-3 in the League in 17 days time....
hope you're right. I'd have taken out of cup for a league win before tonight's kick off.
League has to be priority one.

Wolves have proved time and again this season they're no mugs at the Molineux. It'd be a fantastic 3 points.

Worst thing is the break is coming now and I will have to wait 2 weeks for our next game with the bitterness of 2 crap losses that sent us back to 6th in the league and out of our only possible trophy this season, and this is after all the euphoria of the PSG game!

Urgh.. Terrible 2 weeks of football coming.

I'm not surprised at the result really, we've had a really tough run of matches. Even the bench looked lethargic; everyone's as mentally tired as they are physically, not surprising given the last few months on and off the field.

We've had awful luck with cup draws too, with incredibly tough away fixtures. Even now, we get Barca and lose our initial 'second leg at home advantage' on a technicality! *sigh*

So, an incredibly welcome international break for us, and a straight forward test now for Ole and the players in the chase for a top four finish.

Media pressure will probably ramp-up massively for Ole now too.

I so hope Wolves go on to win the cup, they are having a cracking season.

I posted this in the Kneejerk post but those going on about Ole being too nice and loyal to those walking straight back in the team are deluded.

Ole needs these players match fit asap! If that meant throwing them all in against Wolves in a cup game where, shitmperformance notwithstanding, the worst that happens is we’re out of a tournament, then so be it.

Would much rather that then trying to get this match fitness back during vital league games.

We looked like a team lacked match sharpness.

Maybe a touch of complacency has grown since the psg game, players thinking we are better than we are.

Overall, disappointment because thought we's have a chance to win the cup this year.

Lets hope it focus minds again

Relax 10%? Do you mean the big party and orgy in Paris? That Pogba was knackered in London, again on Sat. Must be a big big party that drained the whole team for the whole week. Only Shaw showed up, he doesn't mixed with the boys and plays golf perhaps.

This dogshite of squad isn't going to compete for any major honour. Jose Mourinho was right.

Not good considering we needed to score all match. Think this is under representing Wolves’ chances quite a bit tol.

We need some players who can average a 7-8/10 every game. We really haven't got anyone at the moment.

Not really concerned about the FA Cup, we have enough tough matches ahead as it is.

City going through the way they did to keep their trophy haul alive was more aggravating.

Sorry was is just me or was Romero sooo slow in getting down for both goals? Sure we offered little in attack but i felt DDG would have stopped both of those.

And by the end of the season there might be too many bad results to categorize it the opposite way :wenger: .

De Gea should have played

I don't like this playing no2 in the cups. It's bullshit.
Eh, Romero was our MotM and I don’t think many would suggest De Gea has shown better form than Romero recently. It’s essential United keeper Romero happy, as we are in a dream scenario with our keepers.

Looked pretty clueless against a very well organised low block. It's a combination of needing to develop more of a plan in the final third to break down these teams, this usually needs to be centred around getting to the by line and cutting back. We only attack down one side so it's pretty easy to stop us doing that.

Of course there's a lack of quality too. More coaching and better players needed.

It was comical. Two saves got him MOTM and that's saying a lot about the rest of our players tonight. Saves: The first '1on1' save he made was a terrible rash decision and could have backfired immensely. The reflex save he made from the corner was good.

Comical: The first goal I've given him the benefit of the doubt that it went through bodies but he just wasn't athletic enough to react. The second goal was one of the most comical goals I've seen in a while. Reminded me of schoolboy kids playing goal letting one in at the near post. Why do you jump over the ball like that? Be quicker on your feet and you can either save it into your hands or block/kick it out with feet.

He lacks athleticism. He has very strong mental attributes that make him the right choice for cup games though. We just have to make sure we don't need to rely on him as much as we needed to today.
