Premier League Gameweek 2 fixtures (18th - 20th August 2018)

That was beyond terrible at all levels. Mourinho will get the blame and he deserves it but the mistakes some of these players make are unbelievable.

Young-Bailly-Lindelof-Shaw is so bad for a back four. Mata hasn’t been good enough for years and he still starts.

Also, how can a team so tall be so consistently terrible at defending set pieces?

Something even more infuriating than our football is on it's way this second half, prepare yourselves for footballs biggest issue... time wasting.

The match day thread is already at 45 pages. Guessing it’s not as long when United win.

It's not the loss that's problematic (if it comes to that) it's the way the team plays - and I felt so even against Leicester when the team was defending a 1-0 lead in the first half at home parking the bus in the United area... United need a new philosophy as a team (and maybe even as a club) because this feels like a dead end street - and the results seem to confirm that.

I’d love to complain about Jose here but Martial has done absolutely nothing all game.

I'm guessing this is gonna be one of those "if Utd didn't drop points against these teams, they would have won the league" things.

No idea, no automatisms, no structure. He is a relic of the past. I had hoped Manchester United wpull try to sign Maurizio Sarri but it's a shame thay he left Napoli for Chelsea.

Mourinho has lost the dressing room, just like he did at Chelsea twice before and he did at Madrid. He should never have been allowed to coach a club with the prestige of Manchester United.

Imagine what Pogba's thinking. Coming back from winning the WC, great team, great coach, great style of play etc - to this dross. I'd be so frustrated.

I hate seeing PL footballers fail to beat the first man at a corner.

france playing style was Mourinho's wet dream

Glad they lost but Jesus for a team that doesn't attack they get a lot of penalties.

How long until Josè has a mental breakdown and resign or get sacked? Can't believe the lack of reaction from United in the second half. City are just good, instead.

He will never resign because he won't leave 15-20 million on the table just like that. But the problems at United are obvious and all problems that showed itself during the summer are here to stay. This isn't done with a quick fix changing the manager. This squad simply isn't up there with the best in England and Europe.

There’s no manager in the world that would win the league with this group of players and I’m not convinced in the slightest that whoever comes next will do a better job especially after thinking about the managers who would be possible to get. With that said, it’s just not going to work out with Mourinho.

5 of the starting line up today were Mourinho signed players, all 30m+ and they're not bad players, I really think he's lost the dressing room now

Winning the league is a stretch (City are significantly above anybody else, I think) but they have a decent group of players. De Gea, Pogba and Sanchez are three players who you can argue are world class in their positions, and the likes of Lukaku, Martial, Bailly, Matic etc are very good players, some of the best in the league in their position. Some obvious weaknesses at fullback and RW, but with a bit of investment in the right areas you'd have a very good squad, for me if you added say Sidibe and Alex Sandro they'd have the second best starting XI in the league. Honestly I can't believe how badly their fullback positions have been ignored, especially given how important an area it is in modern football. Valencia is still good but very ageing and Darmian is woeful .. on the other side again you have Young who is getting on, and Shaw who is still yet to have a good season for them.

Overall though, it's a good side, with a load of players who cost tons of money (Including Fred now) that you have to say aren't actually bad players.

I think Mourinho is a great manager, one of the best of this generation, but maybe it's just not been a good 'fit' at United. I honestly don't think he's done badly thus far (2 trophies first season, 2nd and a cup final 2nd season) but it seems like there's a black cloud over the club right now, constant negative press and some of the players don't seem to be happy. I don't know whether that's just your standard media nonsense because United are such a huge club, but the performance today was utterly woeful. It's just one game of course, but the fans just seem to have lost faith in Mourinho, and you've got a pretty toxic atmosphere. It's almost like Arsenal towards the end with Wenger, just a divided, angry fanbase who aren't enjoying watching their team play.

I agree with you that the team isn't bad. Some of those players were world class at their old clubs, it's a really strong squad with just a couple of weak areas.

Huddersfield are shite but knowing us we will probably lose to them. So emphatic from City
We could lose to huddersfield, look at our play today vs a nothing team. City are cruising past these.

Think I've seen this script before...

Mou was amazing for us his first spell, 04/05 was glorious. He's not been the same since the Madrid job though. Not the same manager at all. Bitter, miserable, deluded, even though he won a title with us in 14/15 but we played dreadful football from January. Then the meltdown and Eva issues.

Utd have a decent squad. Should be creating more than 3 shots on target against Brighton. Hope Utd get a coach who wants to play with the ball after Mou. He needs time off and to find what would bring some joy to his life.

Any ideas as to what specifically caused this shift in his demeanour? The man looks thoroughly bitter and depressed.

Thought he was the Happy One this time around.

Enjoying this?

This could be your best season since Moyes really. Might end up praying for him to stay.

It was always going to end in tears obviously - I hadn't anticipated Woodward stabbing him in the back like this though, or how clichéed Jose would be in pursuit of his methods ("I just want to sell martial, buy perisic/willian and play some shit football with old men"). I kinda wish Mourinho had been given full reign this summer to do what he wants, but this could be good too.

I can see you're on fire since yesterday with sly little digs and smug posts.
What goes around comes around.

Fred was absolutely dreadful yesterday, he might come good but he looked like he was pooing himself every time a Brighton player closed him down. Not every player can come into a new League and settle straight away like Naby Keita.

Think he will do well but he's played one premier league game, at home against one of the worst teams in the league, where you basically just camped inside their half. Think Palace should be a better test in a game where the opposition will actually carry at least a little threat.
