I can just imagine the avid Trumper sitting at home.

Opens Twitter to see the president has tweeted "LAW &ORDER!".

A satisfied smile crosses his face as he thinks "Well done Mr. President, that should calm things down. What a perfect and profound response."
 
Why, are these people that we have conditioned to believe destruction to be the solution to every problem, trying to solve problems with destruction?
 
I've just had the unpleasant experience of reading about the agricultural strikes someone mentioned up-thread, regarding the 'effectiveness' of peaceful protesting. Here's some quotes from the employers, witnesses and associates:
"We protect our farmers here in Kern county. But the Mexicans are trash. They have no standard of living. We herd them like pigs."
"It took the average picker ten hours to harvest 300 pounds. Planters offered 40 cents a hundredweight – that was not enough to buy enough food and gas to get to the next job."
"You Mexicans are all dirty."
On the first day of the strike, a California Highway Patrol vehicle came through the town, two blocks from the railroad crossing, with a machine gun mounted. Rudy Castro, a witness, stated that "they were ready to mow down these strikers, all because they had the audacity to ask for more money."
Three strikers were murdered by their employers.

Because people are angry and peaceful protests are often ineffective. I'd point to Colin Kaepernick, just look at the backlash he received from a peaceful protest. It reached a number of people worldwide, but unfortunately didn't change much.

I really hope you’re not referencing my post.
What you refer to are the protests of 1933... So not at all what I was referring to. At least have the nerve to tag me if you’re going to try (and fail) to discredit me.

I disagree with your opinion, certainly not because I possess any superior knowledge but because (I guess) we perceive things differently; in my view, progress only arrives because of force - force of circumstances (disasters, plagues leading to financial collapse etc etc) or force of political pressure. And, of course, because of leaders' realisation that change is inevitable so they might as well board the bandwagon.
 
What would happen if a load of people just stormed the White House? Looking at that picture of Washington makes me think it could happen.

Appreciate the apology. That’s fine. I want to be clear though: my opinion can not be gleaned from the post you referenced, because I was regurgitating fact. It would be a gross simplification of the problem to denounce the riots without understanding the history and context - we both agree on that.

That's interesting with regards to leadership as there must be an awful lot of Americans looking at Trump and knowing they'll never see any meaningful change to their country with him at the helm. When you put the into perspective I guess you must look at other avenues with regards to how you can bring about change. With Obama at least there was always the possibility things could be different with people willing to be patient going given the element of hope that existed. With Trump though? Well.

They’d very quickly be shot by the secret service agents armed with automatic rifles.

Sorry but they could not.
It would be a political decision to give up the White House because too many lives of the protestors/citizens would be lost.
It would also require that a lot/tens of thousands of protesters/citizens would be willing to die.

A trained and equipped regiment/division with air support (nothing heavy, just a few helicopters equipped with machines guns and grenade launchers and for recon) would probably enough to hold the white house against mostly unarmed protesters.
Even at the moment they could probably repel a few thousand protesters with a few well placed machine guns, and that is without further support coming.

No way everything could go to court. Numbers like this could paralyze the system.

But, if we can throw hospitals up in weeks, we could throw jails up in days.

Trump's words and actions continually confirm that the protesters are correct in their feelings and opinions.
It's as if Cameron Alexander from American History X became president.
 
Loving the protests and the fact that people are ready to go against the Western establishments. My only criticism of the riots is people going against private property, instead of aiming for the public one and the government institutions.

The local communities deserve help, not destruction. Seeing police vehicles and precincts on fire is a beautiful sight, though. :drool:

The other side will clutch pearls at the indignation & disrespect shown by the black FBI agent to the police & claim his attitude is the problem. Toss in some ‘obviously he wasn’t on the same side as the police’ & ‘if he isan FBI agent, why is he out in a protest?’

Gotcha, but doesn’t stop the fact that such thoughts from the other side. The video is being purported shown incorrectly, that’s disappointing to twist facts, but the right will absolutely think that the black detainee is in the wrong.
