Qanon

It has been the case forever. Social media might have made them more visible, but these kinds of anti-rational movements have always existed. People are too quick to blame the internet and social media for these things.

We’ve had this discussion before but the fact they’re more visible is the reason their numbers are swelling. A few nutters exchanging nutty ideas in isolated back rooms was never a problem for society.

It has always existed, you're right. What the internet has done is allowed these disparate people to contact each other and egg each other on. Back in the day the echo chamber was a monthly newsletter and you had to write letters to contact any other believers. Nowadays they just have to turn their phone on to get confirmation bias.

These types of deep state conspiracy theories have been swirling around for years. I'm not at all sure there are proportionally more people involved in them than there used to be, and I haven't seen any statistics to say otherwise. It has eased communication, and possibly made actual action more attainable, but dog-whistling or even blatantly racist conspiracy theorists had proponents long before the internet. The same with anti-feminism, anti-globalism, anti-Semitic (often combined with anti-socialism in Cultural Marxism and Jewish Bolshevism), etc.

Personally, I think that for all the damage the internet has done in this regard, it has also opened up an avenue for people to become more informed.

Yeah that’s a fair point. And I admire your optimism. It’s hard not to despair about viral misinformation in the era of Trump and Brexit though. I guess that was possible in the past (actual Nazis, for example) but it does seem like we’ve gone backwards in recent years.

Yes, Trump and Trump-esque (simplification, obviously) politicians in other countries (Bolsonaro, Orban, Le Pen, etc) definitely represent a decline in public discourse. Perhaps I'm not quite as optimistic as my post made it seem, I'm just not sure the internet is really to blame. The Nazis are the best example of how it can happen without it, as you mentioned.

I still despise TheDonald* and 8chan and Stormfront and all the other cesspits of alt-right scum on the internet.

*And all the other reactionary subs that exist on Reddit

Waaaaaaay more mental.
Does it get a more mental then the pee tape stuff ?
If basically means equating an official probe that's been authorized by the AG with a conspiracy theory that's been posted by some anonymous guy on the cesspool of the internet, then yes.
Cheers I thought you would agree.

I'm not actually talking about investigation but the people who are following it. Whats the difference between a Qanon believing grandma and Louise Mensch ? The only different being one is on reddit and the other had a article in the New York Times. A Qanon person waiting for Trump to ''Drain The Swamp'' and thinking the United States is under the control of the Soviet Union. The lists just goes on and on.

There's a range of people who since 2016 have check out of actual reality and completely ignore the problems we are facing.

Maybe we can lump sports in general in there as well? Since some people use those to escape reality, too? The only difference being one is on reddit and one is on Sky/Redcafe.

Naw. People use sports to escape their daily lives/responsibilities/regrets not to escape reality. Its a rather big difference. Think of how angry some people get when their team loses and they act pissy all day, they are definitely not escaping reality ya know?

Great subreddit. But realise now the world is actually fecked. We make progress as a society by each successive generation being slightly more left/progressive than the last. However the buck stops with these young 'uns. Complete and utter retards.

It's not just young 'uns.

Definitely. We know for a fact Trump bangs hookers. Getting them to piss on him isn’t all that surreal in that context. These freaks are accusing the Dems of eating children.

Huh? I don't think it works like that. Do you like having your wife/gf piss on you? I mean you bang your wife so having her piss on you isn't all that surreal in that context right?

Also I think someone corrected that, the accusation was that Trump paid them piss on some bed that the Obamas slept in I think.

Semantics. I repeat. These people are accusing the Dems of literally eating children.

Read that the guy who murdered Frank Cali was a fan of this thing, and already his lawyer is using it to defend him. Something about him being a victim of hate spread in the internet.

I know the German league is boring but it can't be that bad.

Dunno, there are adults in full kits on match-day.

Trump Fans Are Suckers and QAnon Is Perfect for Them
And aggrieved, and paranoid, and thrilled to have “An Answer” that explains everything about the world they hate and tells them Trump is great and they’re pretty good, too.

Apocalypse in America: The Smell of Fascism in the pro-Trump QAnon Conspiracy
QAnon - vengeful, sprawling, non-sequential, self-referential, uncommitted to democratic process and full of hot air - is the perfect conspiracy theory for the Trump era. And, like the president, its fans are doubling down

I remember once listening/watching eagerly to one of the earlier releases of Qanon stuff as it came out, when everybody was talking about it. Must have sat there for well over 30mins....what a load of boring tripe. Had to stop listening in the end. Still can’t believe folk fell for it all.

Replace Qanon with Mueller report.

There's far more credibility in the Mueller Report than Qanon bullshit. Don't be making false equivalencies just because the outcome of the former didn't lead to a Trump impeachment.
