Well Rooney hasn't trained much so him not starting isn't a surprise and Welbeck has as much impact in the opposition box as Heskey these days so it's not that difficult to see why Fergie has gone with Hernandez against a team who don't concede much at home nowadays. We'll need to be clinical today and Hernandez is the man for that.

He played shit? He scored!!! He offers that ability. Even if not on fire he still can grab a goal and in this game that maybe the difference. Welbz, God love him, will come off the park having played great, but we draw 0-0 because he has not. Go with the scorer in scrappy games IMHO.

It's probably the fact he's come at the cost of Cleverley that annoys most people. Carrick and Cleverley has been our best CM partnership by miles this season, while Giggs has impressed out wide, not in the centre. If we'd started Giggs on the left and Cleverley in the middle, few would be moaning.

I agree I'd rather have Giggs on the bench or on the left instead of Young and one of Anderson/Cleverley next to Carrick, but worst case scenario come the 60th-ish minute and we can choose from Rooney, Welbeck, Cleverley, or Anderson to come in and make a difference.
Our bench on paper is significantly stronger than whatever side that team could put out, incase of emergency I think we have a good enough back up plan to ensure we don't slip up, not that I really expect us to.

If having a player who does literally feck all of any use at all for an entire game, then scores a tap in was good enough for a team like United, we'd have signed Darren Bent years ago.

His performance against Reading was the most useless I can remember in a long time from a United forward. He did literally nothing of any use at all until the goal.

And QPR will sit back today, like they do against everyone. Hernandez is useful at stretching teams who push up. You can't stretch a team if they wont push up in the first place.

Have we actually ever drawn a game 0-0 when Welbeck's been in the team btw? Do people just not pay attention to what Welbeck does at all? I get confused by this. After the Real game everyone was saying he'd "come of age"...he just played exactly the same as he nearly always does.
 
We had Young and Nani starting so where was Welbeck going to play? He's hardly played up top anyway. Hernandez starting seems a good idea to me even if he wasn't at his best vs Reading. His all round play in general has been pretty good this season.

Since the feck when is all Hernadez does is stretch teams. It is his movement in the box that gets the goals! Most of his goals have come from crosses when his movment gets him away, not balls played through for his pace to burn the defence. I am saying he almost guarantees a goal when he plays, can you say the same about Welbeck, and I like Welbz, but goals wins games and in a tight scrappy game like this will be, go with the PROVEN goalscorer.

Nah. Just because Welbecks finishing is below average, his play in the box is Heskey like. The Caf has said.
 
While I'd take absolutely any win, I wouldn't half mind a 3-2 win in the 94th minute. Then let's see if their players go around celebrating.
 
Good line up, except for Giggs in centre midfield, obviously. Hopefully QPR do their usual and barely muster up an attack and as such Giggs won't have to do any defensive work.
 
RVP and Chicharito didn't go so well last time in the League, don't like the choice of Giggs in midfield. That CB combo is nifty though.

Welbeck has been very good for us this season but it's not wrong to suggest he's been incredibly poor with his composure and decision making in the box and in a game where chances are likely to be few and far between, you'd want someone like Hernandez to be there when a chance does fall our way.
 
This in no way is a slight on Cleverley. QPR is a relatively weak opponent, though they've caused a few problems lately under Harry. Giggs should be more than comfortable against them. And it's really not about Giggs "running the offense" (to use an Americanism)...with today's lineup it's all about getting the ball out wide to Nani and Young.

I really like this XI -- especially Giggs -- in this situation, but don't expect to see Fergie bring it out again if/when we meet Bayern or Barcelona.

Hernandez and RvP...the goals will come.
 
QPR will be on the defensive today going by every other game I've seen them in, so that could totally work in our favour. Or we might draw 0-0.
 
A lot of criticism of Hernandez being in the starting XI. Unfair criticism in my opinion. He rarely gets a game, yet when he's thrust back into the team we expect him to be at his sharpest straight away? He needs games too. Even when he's having an off day he's still a goal threat, like against Reading. If anyone has justified selection it's him and Nani. I'm not sure how much more the lad can do really.
 
I can see Hernandez doing well with the crosses Nani puts in tbh and it makes sense to play him.
 
Chicarito being picked is more a case of Fergie trying to keep him happy than him deserving a spot.

Where as Hernandez's play against Reading outside of the box was the literal equivalent of playing with 10 men.

Anyone who compares Welbeck with Heskey instantly loses the validity of any opinion they have on football.

I just don't think this is a Hernandez type game, at all. Especially not when he was so fecking shit in the last one, which actually was a game that should have suited him.
