Question Time & This Week

How did Fiona "How much more could I sound and look like a Tory?" Bruce do this week?

I've not minded her at all, she's no better or worse than Dimbleby in my view, but there was a pretty poor bit last night. An audience member mentions 'listening to phone-ins, which I sadly often do...' which prompts Fiona to have a private laugh with Nick Ferrari for 10 seconds or so drowning out the point being made, she then asks Ferrari to let the audience member finish her point, the audience member adds that she's twice spoken to Ferrari on his show and Fiona cries 'shall we let Nick speak then?', to which the audience member says 'no, can I just finish what I was saying?'. By no means an outrage but it was poor anchoring.

The absolute delusion on show at this late hour regarding Brexit would be hilarious if it wasn't so frustrating.

People still don't seem to have a clue on what no deal actually means, on what the 39 billion is for, or on how it isn't a bargaining chip that can be used. Ferrari still comparing Brexit to his divorce, the tory still saying it will be alright on the night, Labour still doing bugger all to help. People who are talking in facts given the same or less of a platform than those who talk in fantasy land. The whole thing is beyond pathetic, last night's QT encapsulating a lot of it.

Completely agreed.

She's also been pulled up for endorsing Isabel Oakeshott's notion Labour are six points behind in the polls when Diane Abbott was right to say the parties are roughly even on aggregate. If you listen to the clip it sounds like Fiona milks it a bit to get over with the audience ('you're behind Diane... (audience laughter) ... definitely') at Abbott's expense. Again not great anchoring.

Yup, the whole "That'll show the EU" thing is delusional.

If I was the EU I would be tempted to tell the UK to feck off.

Yes hence why I was asking. She was also allegedly involved in warming up the audience prior to going live with some stuff at Abbott's expense. I think she's a disaster waiting to happen myself and it's telling that two shows in she's causing difficulties. I'd have taken Maitlis or Wark over her as Dimbleby's replacement any day of the week

Absolutely, as I think I mentioned before, they are both experienced interviewers and can sniff bullshit when they smell it.

Bruce is news reader & presenter, she doesn't do interviews or talk to high powered bullshitters for a living.

I reckon she got the gig on the basis that she'd be good for ratings not for her ability to control a panel. It's a modern TV disease that the minute somebody becomes a celeb from one form of television they suddenly start appearing on all sorts of shows simply for their celebrity appeal eg Danny Dyer doing history shows, Alan fecking Titchmarsh doing anything that doesn't involve gardens etc etc

It feels like a disease anyway. I also don't like it when news and current affairs programmes are named after the presenter, 'the insert name show', as if they're about the presenter not the content. These should be about the people interviewed and the news items, not how clever the presenter is, in fact ideally you wouldn't even remember who it was.

Richard Burgon still talking about respecting the referendum.

Already a reference to how "resilient" we are in this country. Who needs food?!

That Venezuela question was a dumpster fire all round.

Fiona Bruce update? Warmed up the audience with a few gags about Belsen maybe?

It is funny how when they have someone who actually knows something about the workings of Brexit on QT the panel members on the right wing are reduced to pathetic head shaking and eye rolling without coming back with anything of substance. Who would have thought?

All Tominey had to bring to the table was that she was stockpiling optimism. Wonder how many people that will feed and how many diseases that will help cure.

Bet Rees-Mogg didn't envisage his night developing into insisting he doesn't wish to intern farmers.

It was.

In other news This Week is soon to finish, as O'Neil has had enough. I hope there'll be something similar to replace it, personally.

Me too. I'll be sad to see This Week go as I like the format and the regular contributors. The likes of Owen Jones definitely have a point about the tension surrounding Neil's BBC impartiality but I like his interviewing and presenting style. There's nothing wrong with freshening things up and if Neil wants to finish that's his choice but I hope this isn't a further example of BBC shrinking its news and current affairs offer.

Absolutely gutted about This Week ending - I've watched it every week for many years and really love it - Neill is a lethal interviewer and Portillo has really grown on me despite being a die-hard Tory. I'll miss it.

Ah crap didn't know that is ending. I know he's not everyone's taste, but AN was great for that format in my eyes.

I've been struggling to watch Johnson and Portillo smugging it up to everyone that comes on saying a second ref might be in order tbh.
